All-Pervading Manifestation of God's Energy
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Absolute Truth is not simply localized in one place, but expands throughout creation via His inconceivable potencies. By studying his instructions, we learn how the Supreme Lord is simultaneously distinct from and one with His energies, how He controls the material nature, and how to perceive His divine presence everywhere.
The Omnipresence of the Lord's Potency
The concept of God's all-pervading nature can be difficult to grasp, but Śrīla Prabhupāda perfectly explains it using the analogy of the sun. Just as the sun planet remains in one location while its light and heat spread everywhere, the Supreme Personality of Godhead resides in His eternal abode while His energy sustains the entire universe.
- Although He (God) is in His abode, His energy is distributed everywhere, just as the sun is localized as well as expanded everywhere, since the rays of the sun, being nondifferent from the sun, are accepted as expansions of the sun disc.
- Our consciousness is perceived within the limit of our particular body, but the superconsciousness, or the existence of God, is perceived everywhere. He is present everywhere by His energy.
- The Lord confirms in the Bhagavad-gita (BG 9.4), mat-sthani sarva-bhutani: Everything is resting on Me. This indicates that everything is resting on His own energy.
The Material and Spiritual Manifestations
Nothing exists independently of the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda details how both the eternal, blissful spiritual sky and the temporary, multifaceted material world are simply displays of the Lord's internal and external energies.
- The whole material or even the spiritual creation is a manifestation of the energy of the Lord, just as the light and heat of a fire are different manifestations of the fire's energy.
- The Lord has His own energies (CC Madhya 13.65, purport), and one of them, namely the external energy, creates the material world and the varieties of happiness and distress for the conditioned souls under the supervision of the Lord.
- It is stated in the Visnu Purana that whatever we find, anywhere and everywhere, is the distribution of the energy of the Supreme Lord.
The Supreme Controller of the Illusory Energy
Mundane philosophers often falsely conclude that the Absolute Truth is somehow bound or shaped by material nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda firmly refutes this, establishing that while conditioned souls are overpowered by the Lord's external energy (māyā), the Lord Himself is the supreme master and controller of that energy.
- Material nature is also not independent of the Lord, since the Lord Himself has claimed material nature as mama maya, or "My energy" (BG 7.14), and as me bhinna prakrtir astadha, or "My separated energy in eight divisions.
- Material nature is subordinate to the will of the Supreme Lord, and therefore He cannot be subjected to the laws of material nature. It is contradictory for the Lord to be subjected to the laws of His own inferior energy - BG 7.7.
- The energy and the energetic Personality of Godhead are not different, and although such energy is one with God, He is never overpowered by it. Although the living entities are also parts and parcels of the Lord, they are overcome by the material energy.
Recognizing the Lord Through His Energy
It is a mark of profound spiritual advancement to see the hand of God in all things. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that a sincere practitioner does not need to see the Lord's physical form immediately; they can spiritually elevate their mind simply by contemplating how the phenomenal world is a reflection of the Lord's potencies.
- The room is dark, and the sun is far away in the sky, but the sun's reflection on the water illuminates the darkness of the room. A pure devotee can realize the presence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in everything by the reflection of His energy.
- By a gross conception of God through the material manifestations of His energy, one is enabled to spiritualize the mind and the senses and gradually concentrate the mind upon Lord Visnu.
- The asuras cannot recognize the existence of the Lord, although there are vivid descriptions of the Lord in the revealed scriptures, although the Lord incarnates and exhibits His uncommon strength and energy.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully clarifies the relationship between the Supreme Personality of Godhead and the cosmic manifestation. Through the perfect analogy of the sun and the sunshine, we understand that while Śrī Kṛṣṇa enjoys eternally in His transcendental abode, He simultaneously pervades every atom of the creation through His unlimited energies. Both the dazzling spiritual sky and the complex mechanics of the material universe are simply transformations of His divine potency. While atheists and impersonalists fail to recognize the supreme energetic source behind these phenomena, and while conditioned souls remain hopelessly entangled within the laws of the material energy (māyā), the Lord Himself remains eternally untouched and superior to His own creation. By deeply meditating on the Lord's energies and recognizing His presence in every element of nature, a sincere devotee quickly spiritualizes their consciousness and prepares themselves for direct association with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
