Affectionate Mothers Reveal the Tender Power of Devotional Love
Motherly affection is one of the most tender forms of care in human life, but it reaches perfection when connected to Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a mother naturally protects, nourishes, worries for, and serves her child, yet the same affection becomes transcendental when offered to the Supreme Lord. In Mother Yaśodā and Devakī, maternal love becomes so intimate that awe of God's majesty is covered by concern for His welfare. This category reveals how devotional love can appear soft, protective, and domestic while still being spiritually profound.
Motherly Affection Protects and Nourishes
An affectionate mother naturally thinks first of the child's welfare. She may chastise, guard, feed, and worry, but these actions arise from care rather than enmity. In human society, such affection is necessary, and when it is purified by dharma it supports spiritual and moral development.
- A father and mother are always affectionate to their children. When the children are disobedient the parents chastise them, not due to enmity but only for the child's instruction and welfare.
- An affectionate mother takes great care of her child and is always anxious to see that the child is not disturbed even for a moment.
- Advanced civilization, the mother is killing the child, abortion. You see? Still, it is called advancement. Mother's duty is to take care of the child, motherly affection.
- Soft-hearted woman, vama-svabhava, they should be given protection. They should be trained up how to become faithful wife, affectionate mother. Then the home will be very happy.
Kṛṣṇa Accepts the Care of His Mothers
Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, yet He accepts the affectionate service of His mothers. Mother Yaśodā bathes, feeds, protects, and worries for Him as if He were an ordinary child, while Devakī fears for His safety before Kaṁsa. Śrīla Prabhupāda shows that this is not ignorance but the action of yogamāyā, allowing intimate love to cover awareness of His unlimited opulence.
- Although the SPG, Krsna, who is full of all opulences, did not disturb His mother's (Yasoda's) parental affection, His opulence was automatically displayed, for Krsna's opulence is never lost at any stage, but is manifest at the proper time - SB 10.8.36.
- Because of her (mother Yasoda's) deep affection for Krsna, she could never think that her very son was Narayana, the Personality of Godhead Himself. That is the action of yogamaya, the internal potency of the Supreme Lord.
- Krsna is always neat, clean and opulent and does not need to be washed, bathed or dressed, yet mother Yasoda, because of affection, considered Him her ordinary child and did her duties to keep her son brilliant.
- My dear Maharaja Pariksit, because of intense love and affection, mother Yasoda, Krsna's mother, considered Krsna, who was at the peak of all opulences, to be her own son - SB 10.11.20.
Even Imitated Motherhood Drew Kṛṣṇa's Mercy
Pūtanā came with a deadly intention, yet she approached Kṛṣṇa in the external dress of an affectionate mother. The Lord accepted the semblance of motherly service and awarded her an astonishing result. This reveals the greatness of Kṛṣṇa's mercy: He searches for even the smallest trace of service and magnifies it beyond calculation.
- A living creature, however powerful he may become by dint of severe penance, can never become equal to the Supreme Lord. Lord Krsna accepted the motherhood of Putana because she pretended to be an affectionate mother, allowing Krsna to suck her breast.
- Brahma said, "I think of how You are so kind, so magnanimous, that even Putana, who came to cheat You by dressing herself as a very affectionate mother, was awarded liberation and the actual post of a mother".
- Lord Krsna accepted the motherhood of Putana because she pretended to be an affectionate mother, allowing Krsna to suck her breast. The Lord accepts the least qualification of the living entity and awards him the highest reward.
- The Lord took all this (Putana's assuming the form of a very beautiful woman and approaching Krsna exactly like an affectionate mother) into consideration, and thus she was automatically promoted to a position like that of mother Yasoda.
Affectionate Mothers Can Teach Renunciation
Motherly affection does not always mean keeping the child near for personal comfort. Śacīmātā allowed Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to take sannyāsa and search for Kṛṣṇa, teaching that the highest maternal love supports the soul's spiritual destiny. The Lord's own renunciation becomes more striking because He left behind an affectionate mother, a young wife, home, honor, and social prestige for the sake of distributing divine love.
- By allowing her son (Caitanya) to go as a sannyasi and search for Krsna, Sacimata instructs all mothers of the world. She indicates that all sons should become real devotees of Krsna and should not stay at home under the care of an affectionate mother.
- He (Caitanya Mahaprabhu) was in renounced order of life; He gave up His family, beautiful wife, very affectionate mother, very comfortable home, very prestige, too much prestige of His personality in the society. He gave up everything.
- In Nadia, the city where He lived, His position was very respectable, and physically He was very beautiful. Yet He gave up His young, faithful, beautiful wife, His affectionate mother, His position, and everything else. This is called vairagya, renunciation.
- When Caitanya Mahaprabhu was only twenty-four or twenty-five years old He had a lovable, beautiful wife and a devoted, affectionate mother, He gave up everything and took sannyasa, the renounced order of life.
Motherly Affection Becomes Service in Devotional Life
In devotional life, motherly affection is not limited to biological relation. Devotees may serve the Lord or His servants with the care of a mother, offering food, protection, tenderness, and concern. When such affection is connected to Kṛṣṇa, it becomes part of vātsalya-rasa and helps reveal the sweetness of personal devotion.
- Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya's wife was known as Sathira Mata, the mother of Sathi. She was a great devotee of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and she was affectionate like a mother.
- The Lord's favorite vegetables were cooked by Malinidevi, the wife of Srivasa Thakura. She devotedly considered herself a maidservant of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, but in affection she was just like a mother.
- I lost my mother when I was only 14 years old. So I didn't get much of my mother's affection in my childhood. But in my old age, Krishna has given me so many young mothers to take care of me.
- Yes, our Society is depending on love and respect; we are bound by love. You have thought exactly like an affectionate mother. Every mother should think like you for the benefit of her son.
Conclusion
Affectionate mothers reveal devotional love because their care is active, protective, and self-giving. When that motherly affection is centered on Kṛṣṇa, it becomes more than social virtue; it becomes intimate service to the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the tenderness of a mother can nourish spiritual life, and in Mother Yaśodā, Devakī, Śacīmātā, and the devotees who serve with motherly care, we see how love becomes a path of protection, sacrifice, and divine exchange.
