Advising Devotees of God Protects Their Progress in Bhakti
Devotional life matures when advice is accepted from authorized spiritual sources rather than from the restless mind. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that devotees are protected by following Kṛṣṇa, the spiritual master, the previous ācāryas, and the guidance of śāstra. Such advice directs action, association, remembrance, and detachment toward the steady growth of bhakti. Therefore the devotee's progress depends not only on sincerity, but also on submissive hearing and faithful application.
Devotees Act by Authorized Guidance
A devotee does not act whimsically, even when the instruction appears difficult or unexpected. Kṛṣṇa's desire and the advice of realized devotees reveal how action becomes purified in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. When the devotee accepts such direction, service becomes firm and free from unnecessary lamentation.
- Arjuna is here (in BG 4.15) advised to act in Krsna consciousness, following in the footsteps of the Lord's previous disciples, such as the sun-god Vivasvan, as mentioned hereinbefore.
- Because it was desired by Krsna that Pariksit Maharaja agree to the punishment so that the instruction of Srimad-Bhagavatam would thus be revealed to the world, Pariksit Maharaja was advised not to take action.
- Narada advised that a devotee should act perfectly.
- The significance of this particular verse (SB 4.8.71) is that Dhruva Maharaja acted exactly according to the advice of his spiritual master, the great sage Narada.
The Ācāryas Protect the Devotee's Path
The path of bhakti is preserved through faithful following, not through independent invention. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the previous ācāryas and saintly persons give the devotee a tested way to advance without being baffled. Their advice trains the heart to remain fixed on Kṛṣṇa and to avoid the dangers of material remembrance.
- It is advised that a devotee follow the past acaryas and saintly persons, because by such following one can achieve the desired results, with no chance of lamenting or being baffled in his progress.
- This process of transmigration is very subtle; therefore Srila Rupa Gosvami advises devotees to train their minds in order that they will be unable to remember anything other than Krsna.
- Chanting is very simple, but one must practice it seriously. Therefore the author of Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami, advises everyone to keep this verse (CC Adi 17.32) always strung about his neck.
- In this verse Srila Rupa Gosvami advises the devotee to be intelligent enough to distinguish between the kanistha-adhikari, madhyama-adhikari and uttama-adhikari.
Devotional Advice Purifies Practical Life
Spiritual advice enters the ordinary duties of life and makes them favorable for devotion. A devotee may live in society, govern, travel, accept necessities, or manage responsibilities, but the inner principle is to remain guided by śāstra and saintly counsel. In this way practical life becomes a field for service rather than a trap of attachment.
- A devotee may not be expert in materialistic activities. It is therefore advised in the sastra that materialistic activities are not at all suitable for the living entities, especially the devotees.
- Maharaja Pariksit was a devotee of the first order, and thus he used to consult great sages and learned brahmanas, who could advise him by the sastras how to execute the state administration.
- The devotee is advised to accept the necessities of life without attachment. He'll take boiled water, but if boiled water is not available, does it mean he will not drink water? If it is not available, he will drink ordinary water.
- The state would get the best advice without expenditure. They were themselves sama-darsi, equal to everyone, both man and animal. They would not advise the king to give protection to man and instruct him to kill the poor animals.
Pure Devotees Direct Others Toward Kṛṣṇa
The advice of pure devotees does not encourage material bargaining with the Lord. They direct others toward remembrance, surrender, and confidence in Kṛṣṇa's complete protection. Even when devotees make practical arrangements, their real safety comes from following guidance that keeps them close to the Lord.
- Haridasa Thakura never advised the prostitute to give charity to the so-called daridra-narayanas (“poor Narayanas”) or any other such persons.
- Laksmidevi advises all devotees who approach the Lord with material desires that according to her practical experience, the Lord is Kamadeva, and thus there is no need to ask Him for anything material.
- Sukadeva Gosvami said: After Vasudeva advised Nanda Maharaja in this way, Nanda Maharaja and his associates, the cowherd men, took permission from Vasudeva, yoked their bulls to the bullock carts, and started riding for Gokula - SB 10.5.32.
- Upon hearing the advice from Upananda (to move from Gokula to Vrndavana immediately), the cowherd men unanimously agreed. "Very nice," they said. "Very nice" - SB 10.11.30.
Conclusion
Devotional advice is a shelter because it carries the devotee beyond the uncertainty of personal judgment. Śrīla Prabhupāda's presentation of bhakti shows that progress comes by receiving guidance from Kṛṣṇa, śāstra, the spiritual master, and the previous ācāryas, then applying it with sincerity. This guidance protects the mind from distraction, the heart from material dependence, and service from becoming independent or sentimental. The clear devotional takeaway is to hear submissively, follow faithfully, and let authorized advice carry one's life steadily toward Kṛṣṇa.
