Advancement of a Devotee of God Depends on Guru’s Mercy
Devotional advancement begins with mercy, not self-manufactured strength. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the spiritual master connects the devotee to Kṛṣṇa's grace and gives the instructions that make real progress possible. As the devotee follows sincerely, the heart becomes cleaner, the senses become engaged, and Vaiṣṇava qualities begin to increase. Advancement is therefore both received and practiced: mercy opens the path, and faithful service carries the devotee forward.
Guru's Mercy Opens the Path
No one advances in devotional service independently. The spiritual master gives direction, shelter, and access to Kṛṣṇa's mercy, and the disciple's progress depends on receiving that grace properly. This is why humility before the spiritual master is not formality but the foundation of spiritual life. When the devotee follows that guidance, advancement becomes real and protected.
- By the mercy of the spiritual master one is blessed by the mercy of Krsna. Without the grace of the spiritual master one cannot make any advancement.
- Sanatana further inquired Lord Caitanya, "I do not know how to question You about the advancement of spiritual life, but I beg that You kindly, mercifully, let me know everything that I need know.
- The Lord is always ready to give instructions to the pure devotee so that the devotee can advance further and further in devotional service.
- This is a special concession for a devotee. Even if he attains a body that is nonhuman, by the grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead he advances further in devotional service, whether by remembering his past life or by natural causes.
Vaiṣṇava Qualities Increase With Advancement
Progress in Kṛṣṇa consciousness must be visible in character. A devotee should become more tolerant, kind, blameless, and free from envy as service deepens. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that offenses by a devotee reflect badly on the Supreme Lord, so conduct must be guarded carefully. Humility is not weakness; it is the atmosphere in which devotion grows.
- A devotee should always see that his Vaisnava qualities increase with the advancement of his Krsna consciousness. A devotee should be blameless because any offense by the devotee is a scar on the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- A devotee should be so advanced that in spite of being troubled by the asuras, he should tolerate, titiksavah, and still he should be kind upon him, not that "This man is talking against me, against God. Therefore I shall be angry and drive him away." No.
- It is sometimes found that if one devotee has advanced in spiritual activities, other devotees are envious of him. Such envious devotees are not completely freed from the bondage of birth and death.
- The symptoms of a devotee are meekness and humility. Although spiritually very advanced, he will always remain meek and humble, as Kaviraja Gosvami and all the other Vaisnavas have taught us by personal example.
Hearing and Chanting Develop Taste
Devotional life grows by hearing and chanting. Faith becomes firm, taste awakens, and attachment to devotional service gradually develops. This process is not mechanical; it deepens as the devotee sincerely receives the sound and serves with attention. The more the heart is nourished by hearing and chanting, the more naturally it turns toward Kṛṣṇa.
- By advancing in hearing and chanting, a devotee becomes more firmly fixed in his faith, and gradually his initial faith develops into a taste for devotional service, and that taste gradually develops into attachment.
- Bhagavad-gita says that a little advancement in bhakti-rasa can save the devotee from the greatest danger - that of missing the opportunity for human life.
- Prahlada Maharaja achieved the spiritual ecstasies described herein (in SB 7.4.40) by his advancement in spiritual understanding.
- We should be very careful about the regulative principles and follow the footprints of Vaisnava. Don't think that Prahlada Maharaja is ordinary boy. We should learn from Prahlada Maharaja how to advance in devotional service.
All Senses Must Be Engaged in Service
Advancement requires full engagement of the senses in the Lord's service. If even one sense remains attached to gratification, it can disturb the devotee's progress. Therefore the devotee minimizes unnecessary social, political, and bodily entanglements and uses energy for Kṛṣṇa. This practical discipline protects the mercy received through guru and service.
- Unless all of the senses are engaged in the service of the Lord, even one of them engaged in sense gratification can deviate the devotee from the path of transcendental advancement.
- To decrease his (devotee's) material entanglement and help his advancement in spiritual life, he always minimizes his social and political activities and his eating, sleeping, defending, and mating.
- A pure devotee is not envious, hateful, or lazy in the discharge of devotional service. Confident of his advancement, he continually performs his prescribed devotional duties. This is called tat-tat-karma-pravartana.
- Constructing a big building requires great energy, and a devotee does not take to such business if it does not benefit him by advancing his devotional service.
Conclusion
A devotee advances by receiving mercy and then guarding that mercy through humble service. Guru's grace brings Kṛṣṇa's grace, and the sincere devotee responds by hearing, chanting, increasing Vaiṣṇava qualities, and engaging every sense in the Lord's service. Śrīla Prabhupāda directs us to see advancement not as status but as purification of conduct and devotion. When the devotee remains tolerant, blameless, and fully engaged, the path of advancement becomes steady and protected.
