Advanced in Knowledge Means Knowing Kṛṣṇa, Not Mastering Matter
Real knowledge must answer the deepest questions of life. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that education, science, philosophy, and culture are incomplete if they do not lead the living being to understand Kṛṣṇa, the soul, and the purpose of human existence. Material knowledge may refine comfort or increase power, but it cannot free anyone from birth, death, old age, and disease. To be advanced in knowledge means to move beyond matter and use intelligence in the service of the Supreme Lord.
Knowledge Must Lead to God
The human being is meant for knowledge, but knowledge requires a goal. If education does not help one understand God, it remains only a refined form of animal intelligence. Śrīla Prabhupāda challenges the pride of material education by asking whether it teaches the real purpose of life and the source of happiness. The proper use of intelligence is to understand Kṛṣṇa and surrender to Him.
- Because you, human being, you are advancing in knowledge, but what is the goal of knowledge? The goal of knowledge is to understand God. That is the difference between dog and me. He has no goal of knowledge.
- Human being should be still more advanced in knowledge. That knowledge is not comprising only eating, sleeping, mating and defending. That knowledge is to understand the Absolute Truth, God.
- If you are sensible, if you are actually wise, if you are actually advanced in knowledge, then you should surrender to Krsna. This is the conclusion. We have to surrender.
- We must become advanced in knowledge and accept Vasudeva, Krsna, as the supreme.
Material Knowledge Cannot Conquer Death
Material advancement becomes hollow when it cannot solve the unavoidable miseries of life. Technology may produce spaceships, atomic energy, and machines, yet birth, death, old age, and disease remain untouched. This exposes the weakness of knowledge that ignores the soul. True science should reduce suffering at the root, not merely decorate temporary life.
- By its so-called advancement of knowledge human civilization has created many material things, including spaceships and atomic energy. Yet it has failed to create a situation in which people need not die, take birth again, become old or suffer from disease.
- The law of nature, however, does not allow anyone immunity from old age, disease or death. Nor has the advancement of material knowledge solved these problems.
- The real miseries of life is birth, death, old age and disease. You cannot do anything. So where is your advancement of knowledge? The scientists cannot stop death, cannot stop birth.
- You may be very advanced in scientific knowledge, but where is the possibility of stopping these four principle of miserable condition of life? Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi.
Real Knowledge Begins With the Soul
Without knowledge of the soul, education remains incomplete. The first step of spiritual understanding is to know the active principle within the body and the constitutional position of the living being. Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and Vedānta-sūtra exist to lift human beings beyond bodily maintenance. When the soul is understood, knowledge can develop toward liberation and service.
- The duty of those advanced in knowledge in human society is to study the constitutional position of the imperishable soul and not waste the valuable time of human life in merely maintaining the body and not considering life's real responsibility.
- The first beginning of knowledge is that at the present moment, people, although very much proud of their advancement of knowledge, he does not know the, what is the active principle of life.
- Human being is so responsible. If he remains fool, then he loses the chance of life. Why these books are here? This SB, BG, Vedanta-Sutra, and so many nice books there are. Why? Just to make us advanced in knowledge.
- Advancement of material comforts of the body is activity in the mode of ignorance according to the laws of material nature. Real advancement of knowledge means progress of knowledge in self-realization.
Knowledge Requires Guru and Ācāryas
Spiritual knowledge is not manufactured by speculation. One must approach those who are actually in knowledge, worship the ācāryas, and hear in the association of devotees. This protects the student from pride and false conclusions. When knowledge is received properly, it brings the living being toward surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Acaryopasanam, accepting spiritual master, this is also one of the items, twenty items, for advancing in knowledge.
- Acaryopasanam. If you want to advance in knowledge, then you must worship the acaryas. Otherwise, what knowledge you will get.
- If you want to advance in knowledge, then you must worship the acaryas. Otherwise what knowledge you will get? You cannot get, manufacturing knowledge or getting knowledge from somebody who has manufactured knowledge.
- One must hear from persons who are actually in knowledge. As a result of such discussion in the association of devotees, one comes to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Then the first thing one must do is surrender to Him.
Knowledge Becomes Perfect in Devotional Service
Knowledge reaches completion when it is joined with service to Kṛṣṇa. Mere renunciation, speculation, or scholarship cannot purify the heart without devotional engagement. When knowledge is applied in the Lord's service, it becomes absolute and turns into hari-kīrtana, glorification of the Lord. This is the difference between sterile learning and realized spiritual advancement.
- Activities performed in full knowledge strengthen one's advancement in real knowledge. Without Krsna consciousness, mere renunciation of fruitive activities does not actually purify the heart of a conditioned soul.
- Engagement in Krsna consciousness and application of devotional service unto Krsna make it possible to advance in knowledge and detachment, as well as in self-realization.
- Real utilization of advanced knowledge is to establish the glories of the Lord, and that is the real import. Scientific knowledge engaged in the service of the Lord and all similar activities are all factually hari-kirtana, or glorification of the Lord.
- When advancement of knowledge is applied in the service of the Lord, the whole process becomes absolute.
Knowledge Without Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Becomes Illusion
Pride in knowledge can become another form of bondage when God is excluded. Māyā can cover even learned people, making them think they are advanced while they remain unable to solve life's real problems. Material knowledge may increase power, but without spiritual direction it is misused for sense gratification, conflict, and fear. The cure is to bring knowledge back to Kṛṣṇa.
- The asuras . . . mayayapahrta-jnanah (BG 7.15). They may think themselves as very advanced in knowledge, but they are rascal number one because their so-called knowledge, the effect of knowledge, is taken away by maya.
- By the illusory energy of maya, the so-called knowledge, our real knowledge has been taken away, and some foolish knowledge has been imposed upon us that we are thinking - Oh, we are advancing. Advancement of knowledge.
- We want to cheat God and surpass Him, but this is not possible. People think themselves very advanced in knowledge, but actually, due to their pride, their knowledge is taken away by maya.
- What then is the value of all this advancement of knowledge (philanthropy, internationalism, science, philosophy) if the basic principle is ignorance? Unless a person comes to Krsna consciousness, all of his activities are defeated.
Conclusion
Knowledge is advanced only when it brings the living being closer to Kṛṣṇa. Mastering matter without understanding the soul leaves humanity proud, anxious, and unable to solve death, disease, old age, and rebirth. Śrīla Prabhupāda directs knowledge toward guru, ācāryas, scripture, self-realization, and devotional service, where learning becomes purified and useful. When knowledge glorifies the Lord and awakens surrender, it becomes real advancement.
