Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Muslims - The Universal Deliverance
The advent of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu brought a tidal wave of spiritual equality that challenged the deeply entrenched social divisions of His time. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that by generously bestowing the highest perfection of love of Godhead upon the Muslim community, the Lord proved that the eternal soul is never bound by temporary sectarian labels, and that the chanting of the holy name is the universal right of all living beings.
Transcending Rigid Social Boundaries
In 16th-century India, orthodox Hindu society was crippled by strict, unforgiving caste rules. If a person had any connection with the Islamic ruling class, they were considered outcasts with no chance of reclamation. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu completely ignored these bodily designations. He elevated Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who was born into a Muslim family, to the supreme post of nāmācārya (authority of the holy name), and He accepted Rūpa and Sanātana Gosvāmī as His chief apostles, despite their having practically become Muslims by serving in the Nawab's government.
- Hindu society was so rigid at the time of Lord Caitanya that if a Hindu were converted into a Muslim, there was no chance of his being reformed. In this way the Muslim population in India increased.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to introduce this system of Hare Krsna mantra, chanting of the holy name of God, and He appointed this Haridasa Thakura, who happened to be a Muhammadan.
- He (Haridas Thakura) was apparently born in a family of Muhammadans, but because he was chanting the holy name of the Supreme Lord offenselessly, Lord Caitanya empowered him to become the authority, or acarya, of spreading the name.
- Rupa and Sanatana were made the prime ministers of spreading sankirtana movement, the Caitanya cult. We are sitting in Rupa Gosvami's place. Officially, they become Muhammadan, but by the grace of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they became Gosvami.
Transformation of the Governor
The Lord's mercy had the power to melt even the hardest hearts of the ruling class. When approaching the dangerous border of Orissa, the local Muslim governor, who was known to be a drunkard and an enemy of the Vaiṣṇavas, sent his secretary to investigate the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the mere sight of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu overwhelmed the secretary with ecstatic love. Hearing of this, the governor himself came to surrender, weeping and praying to be freed from his past sinful reactions, including the killing of cows.
- When the Muslim governor heard this, his mind changed. He then sent his secretary to the representative of the Orissan government.
- The Muslim secretary came to see Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When he offered his respects to the Lord's lotus feet and uttered the holy name of the Lord, "Krsna, Krsna," he also was overwhelmed with ecstatic love.
- After this, the Muslim governor offered prayers to the lotus feet of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, as well as to the lotus feet of all His devotees. After that, the governor departed. Indeed, he was very pleased.
- The Muslim governor then prayed for liberation from the unlimited sinful reactions he had previously incurred by being envious of brahmanas and Vaisnavas and killing cows.
Debating and Converting the Pathan Soldiers
While traveling through the forest, the Lord was suddenly surrounded by a group of Pathan Muslim soldiers. Among them was a saintly scholar dressed in black who attempted to debate the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu expertly utilized the Muslims' own scripture, the Quran, to philosophically defeat the scholar, proving that love of God is the ultimate goal. Stunned and deeply moved, the entire group of soldiers was initiated into the chanting of the holy name and renounced the world to become wandering mendicants.
- Among the Muslims was a grave person who was wearing a black dress. People called him a saintly person.
- Whatever arguments he put forward, the Lord refuted them all. Finally the person became stunned and could not speak.
- In this way Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu directly initiated the saintly Muslim by advising him to chant the holy name of Krsna. The Muslim's name was changed to Ramadasa. Another Pathana Muslim present there was named Vijuli Khan.
- After bestowing His mercy upon them in this way, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu left. All those Pathana Muslims then became mendicants.
Awe of the Islamic Rulers
The undeniable spiritual potency of the Lord commanded deep respect even from the highest echelons of the Islamic government. The Muslim King of Bengal, Nawab Hussain Shah, was utterly astonished by the massive crowds that followed the Lord without any expectation of material reward. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that Hindu diplomats, like Keśava Chatrī, tried to downplay the Lord's influence out of fear that the King would become envious, but the King recognized the Lord as a genuine prophet and ordered that He never be disturbed.
- At that time (of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu) the Muslim king of Bengal was Nawab Hussain Shah Badasaha.
- When the Muslim king of Bengal heard of Caitanya Mahaprabhu's influence in attracting innumerable people, he became very much astonished and began to speak as follows.
- Kesava Chatri became a diplomat when questioned about Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Although he knew everything about Him, he was afraid that the Muslim King might become His enemy.
- Even a Muslim king could understand Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's transcendental position as a prophet; therefore he ordered the local magistrate not to disturb Him but to let Him do whatever He liked.
Conclusion
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's interactions with the Muslims of His time vividly illustrate the true meaning of sanātana-dharma—the eternal occupation of the soul. By elevating those cast out by society and melting the hearts of fierce soldiers and powerful governors, the Lord demonstrated that the holy name of Kṛṣṇa is the supreme unifying force. True spiritual life is not bound by the names of religions or social castes; it is the universal awakening of dormant love for the Supreme Lord.
