Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Mukunda - The Sweet Singer and Constant Friend
The pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are enriched by the unique contributions of His eternal associates. Mukunda was not only a classmate of the Lord in Navadvīpa but also the lead singer whose voice guided the Lord's trances. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Mukunda’s life is a profound study in both the heights of ecstatic kīrtana and the strict necessity of avoiding mixed, non-devotional association.
Sweet Singer of Ecstasy
During the congregational chanting in Navadvīpa and later in Purī, Mukunda's singing was the key that unlocked the deepest chambers of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's ecstatic love. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, whenever Mukunda sang verses about the loving affairs of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, the Lord would lose all external composure. His mind would "go to pieces," and He would manifest symptoms of divine separation so intense that even great personalities like Advaita Ācārya had to stop dancing to observe and protect Him.
- This stanza was sung by Mukunda in a very sweet voice, but as soon as Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard this stanza, His mind went to pieces.
- Advaita Acarya raised the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to help Him dance, but the Lord, after hearing the stanzas sung by Mukunda, could not be held due to His bodily symptoms.
- When Mukunda saw the ecstasy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he understood the feelings of the Lord and began to sing many stanzas augmenting the force of the Lord's ecstasy.
- When Mukunda saw that Caitanya Mahaprabhu was feeling ecstatic pain and manifesting ecstatic bodily symptoms, all due to feelings of separation from Krsna, he sang songs about Srimati Radharani’s meeting with Krsna. Advaita Acarya also stopped dancing.
Strict Lesson Against Mixing
Despite their intimate friendship, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu did not hesitate to chastise Mukunda for a severe philosophical flaw. Mukunda had a habit of attending the meetings of jñānīs (mental speculators), karmīs (fruitive workers), and yogīs. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that because Mukunda was behaving in this "hodgepodge" manner, the Lord banned him from His presence, decreeing that he would not see Him for millions of years. Instead of lamenting, Mukunda danced in joy, thrilled that he would eventually see the Lord again. This pure devotion immediately melted the Lord's anger.
- Mukunda, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu's class friend and devotee, so he was attending many jnani, karmi, yogi . . . he was going everywhere. Caitanya Mahaprabhu became very much displeased, just to show example that we should not be hodgepodge.
- Sri Mukunda, a great friend and associate of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, used to visit many places where people were against the Vaisnava cult. When Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to know of this, He punished Mukunda, forbidding him to see Him again.
- Mukunda being very sorry, asked his friends whether he would one day be allowed to see Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. When the devotees brought this inquiry to Lord, the Lord replied, “Mukunda will get permission to see Me after many millions of years.”
- When they (devotees) gave this information to Mukunda, he danced with jubilation, and when Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard that Mukunda was so patiently waiting to meet Him after millions of years, He immediately asked him to return.
The Constant Companion
Restored to His favor, Mukunda remained one of the Lord's most steadfast companions. As Śrīla Prabhupāda notes from the commentaries of the previous ācāryas, their relationship went back to the Lord's youth when He actually opened a primary school in Mukunda's home. From Navadvīpa to the Lord's initial journey toward Vṛndāvana, and later during the annual four-month visits to Jagannātha Purī, Mukunda was a permanent fixture in the Lord's divine pastimes.
- Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura writes in his Anubhasya - Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu opened a primary school in the house of Mukunda, or Mukunda Sanjaya, and Mukunda's son, whose name was Purusottama, became the Lord's student.
- Let us offer our respectful obeisances to Sri Vasudeva Datta and the constant attendant of Lord Caitanya, Sri Govinda, and the constant friend of Lord Caitanya, Mukunda, and also to Murari Gupta.
- When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu went toward Vrndavana, Nityananda Prabhu, Candrasekhara and Prabhu Mukunda followed Him.
- Other devotees of the Lord - headed by Advaita, Nityananda Prabhu, Mukunda, Srivasa, Vidyanidhi, Vasudeva and Murari - used to visit Jagannatha Puri and remain with the Lord for four continuous months. The Lord enjoyed various pastimes in their company.
Intimate Dealings and Favor
The closeness between the Lord and Mukunda was often displayed in the simple, loving exchanges of daily life. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the intimate dealings during mealtimes, where the Lord would playfully instruct senior devotees like Advaita Ācārya to stop dancing and go take lunch with Mukunda and Haridāsa Ṭhākura. Mukunda was consistently the recipient of the Lord's special favor, joining Him for prasādam and intimate spiritual discussions.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "Advaita Acarya, You have made Me dance in various ways. Now give up this practice. Go with Mukunda and Haridasa and accept Your lunch."
- You have already made Me dance according to Your vow - Caitanya Mahaprabhu said (to Advaita Acarya) - Now please stop it. You can go and take Your lunch with Mukunda and Haridasa.
- When Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu went to accept the prasadam, They both called Mukunda and Haridasa to come with Them. However, Mukunda and Haridasa, both with folded hands, spoke as follows.
- He (Lord Caitanya) offered His blessings to Haridasa Thakura, and at this time He also asked Advaita Prabhu to explain the Bhagavad-gita as it is (gitara satya-patha) and showed special favor to Mukunda.
Conclusion
Mukunda’s life is a brilliant testament to the power of unalloyed devotion. Through his beautiful singing, he facilitated the highest ecstasies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And through his temporary chastisement, he left an eternal instruction for all Vaiṣṇavas: one must never compromise the purity of the devotional path by associating with impersonalists, and one must accept the Lord's will with boundless, patient joy.
