Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva - The Protector of Devotion
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught by His personal example how a devotee should approach the Supreme Lord. In His pastimes, He exhibited a special, profound reverence for Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, the fierce half-man, half-lion incarnation who protects surrendered souls. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself, He acted as an ideal devotee, constantly taking shelter of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva to remove all obstacles from the path of devotional service.
Daily Obeisances in Purī
While residing in Jagannātha Purī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu established a strict daily routine. After completing His morning duties, He would proceed to the Jagannātha temple. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes that before entering the main sanctum to see Lord Jagannātha, the Lord would always stop at the Deity of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, keeping Him to His left side, to offer His deepest respects.
- After bathing, the Lord stood on the bank of the lake and put on dry garments. After offering obeisances to Lord Nrsimhadeva, whose temple was nearby, the Lord entered a garden.
- Having offered obeisances to Lord Nrsimhadeva, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu visited the temple of Lord Jagannatha. Then He returned to His residence, finished His noon duties and took His lunch.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, His left side toward the Deity, offered obeisances to Lord Nrsimha as He proceeded toward the temple. He recited the following verses again and again while offering obeisances.
- On the southern side, behind and above the twenty-two steps, is a Deity of Lord Nrsimhadeva. It is on the left as one goes up the steps toward the temple.
Prayers and Ecstatic Dancing
When standing before the Deity of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu would be overwhelmed with ecstatic love. He would fall flat on the ground and then rise to perform beautiful dances. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord would continuously recite ancient śāstric prayers, glorifying Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva as the omnipresent protector who tore apart the chest of the demon Hiraṇyakaśipu just to give pleasure to His dear devotee, Prahlāda Mahārāja.
- I offer my respectful obeisances unto You, Lord Nrsimhadeva. You are the giver of pleasure to Maharaja Prahlada, and Your nails cut the chest of Hiranyakasipu like a chisel cutting stone.
- Lord Nrsimhadeva is here, and He is also there on the opposite side. Wherever I go, there I see Lord Nrsimhadeva. He is outside and within my heart. Therefore I take shelter of Lord Nrsimhadeva, the original Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Upon seeing the Deity of Lord Nrsimha in the temple, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu offered His respectful obeisances by falling flat. Then, in ecstatic love, He performed various dances, chanted, and offered prayers.
- In great ecstatic love, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu offered obeisances and prayers unto Lord Nrsimha. The people were astonished to see Lord Caitanya's influence.
Assuming the Divine Mood
Because Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is non-different from Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, simply hearing the holy name of Nṛsiṁha would sometimes cause Him to manifest the terrifying mood of the half-lion incarnation. His eyes would turn red, His hair would stand on end, and He would roar like thunder. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that when the Lord later felt morose for frightening people with this display, His pure devotees assured Him that anyone who witnessed this divine anger was immediately liberated from material bondage.
- As he read the thousand names of the Lord, in due course the holy name of Lord Nrsimha appeared. When Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard the holy name of Lord Nrsimha, He became fully absorbed in thought.
- When Caitanya heard the holy name of Lord Nrsimha He became angry like Him. His eyes became red, His bodily hairs stood on end, all the parts of His body trembled, and He made a thundering sound.
- The Lord became morose and said to Srivasa Thakura, "When I adopted the mood of Lord Nrsimhadeva, people were greatly afraid. Therefore I stopped, since causing fear among people is an offense."
- There was no offense in Your appearing as Nrsimhadeva. Rather, any man who saw You in that mood was immediately liberated from the bondage of material existence.
Dealings with Devotees and Travels
The Lord's deep connection to Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva extended throughout His travels and His interactions with specific devotees. During His tour of South India, He eagerly visited the famous Ahovala-nṛsiṁha temple to offer prayers. Śrīla Prabhupāda mentions that the Lord also showed immense affection for His devotees who worshiped this specific form, changing the name of Pradyumna Brahmacārī to Nṛsiṁhānanda Brahmacārī and participating in blissful exchanges regarding the acceptance of food offerings by the Deity.
- The thirteenth branch was Pradyumna Brahmacari. Since he was a worshiper of Lord Nrsimhadeva, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu changed his name to Nrsimhananda Brahmacari.
- Although Nrsimha Brahmacari felt jubilation within his heart to see Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu eating everything, for the sake of Lord Nrsimhadeva he externally expressed disappointment.
- Upon seeing the Ahovala-nrsimha Deity, Caitanya Mahaprabhu offered many prayers unto the Lord. He then went to Siddhavata, where He saw the Deity of Ramacandra, the Lord of Sitadevi.
- In this way Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu recited different verses from the sastra. The priest of Lord Nrsimhadeva then brought garlands and the remnants of the Lord's food and offered them to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Conclusion
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's pastimes with Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva perfectly illustrate the unity of the Supreme Lord's various incarnations and the vital importance of seeking divine protection. By offering His daily respects, reciting ecstatic prayers, and even manifesting the ferocious mood of the half-lion Lord, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu established that true advancement in spiritual life relies upon the shelter of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, who clears the path of all demonic obstacles and protects the tender creeper of devotion.
