Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Keśava Kāśmīrī - Conquering the Champion
The pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Keśava Kāśmīrī showcase the Lord's supreme intellect and His ability to crush the false pride of materialistic scholars. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although the Lord was merely a sixteen-year-old boy at the time, He easily defeated the most renowned, unconquered champion of India, ultimately transforming him into a pure devotee of the Lord.
Pride of the Champion
Keśava Kāśmīrī was a digvijayī paṇḍita, a scholar who traveled across the country defeating all rivals in debate and poetry. As Śrīla Prabhupāda describes, he was excessively proud of his literary prowess and considered Nimāi Paṇḍita (Lord Caitanya) to be far below his level, merely a teacher of elementary grammar. When they met at the banks of the Ganges, the champion attempted to bluff the Lord, indirectly taunting Him and dismissing His grammatical expertise as insufficient for appreciating high poetry.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu at that time was sixteen years old boy, but He was very learned logician. So the Kesava Kasmiri, he was traveling all over India by, I mean to say, competing other panditas, other learned scholars. So he, everywhere he was victorious.
- Kesava Kasmiri was very proud of his literary career; he was far above the first lessons of grammar, and so he thought the position of Nimai Pandita not at all comparable to his own.
- Since Kesava Kasmiri was a little puffed up, the Lord (Caitanya) increased his artificial pride by presenting Himself as subordinate to him. Thus He flattered him as follows - CC Adi 16.33-35.
- Taking a humble position, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "Because I am not on your level, I have asked you to teach Me by explaining the faults and good qualities in your poetry.
Supreme Śruti-dhara
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu requested the champion to compose verses glorifying the Ganges. The poet immediately recited a hundred brilliant verses at lightning speed. To the absolute astonishment of the champion, the Lord perfectly recited one of the verses from the middle of the presentation. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord playfully attributed His superhuman memory to the grace of the Supreme Lord, just as the poet attributed his rapid composition to the goddess of learning, Sarasvatī.
- Not only did He (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu) hear the verse (CC Adi 16.41, recited by Kesava Kasmiri), but He immediately made a critical study of it.
- When Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked him to explain the meaning of this verse, the champion, very much astonished, inquired from Him as follows.
- How is that, that You (Caitanya Mahaprabhu) can repeat? How is that? - Oh, that is grace of Mother Sarasvati. Just like you (Kesava Kasmiri) can compose a hundred verses within a few minutes, I can, whatever you say, I can remember immediately.
- Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied to the champion, Kesava Kasmiri, that just as he was greatly proud of being a favorite devotee of mother Sarasvati, so someone else, like Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself, being favored by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, could become a sruti-dhara.
Defeat and Revelation
The Lord then meticulously dissected the chosen verse, exposing several severe rhetorical and grammatical faults, notably the redundancy and contradiction in the word 'bhavānī-bhartṛ'. The undefeated champion was left completely stunned and speechless. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the poet went home deeply bewildered, wondering how the goddess of learning could allow him to be humiliated by a mere boy. That night, Mother Sarasvatī appeared to him in a dream and revealed the absolute truth.
- Here is another great fault. You have arranged the word 'bhavani-bhartr' to your great satisfaction, but this betrays the fault of contradiction.
- After hearing the explanation of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the champion poet was struck with wonder. His cleverness stunned, he could not say anything.
- When he heard this judgment from Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the pandita sorrowfully wondered why mother Sarasvati wanted to defeat him through a small boy.
- In a dream the goddess informed him of the Lord's position, and the poetic champion could understand that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.
Ultimate Surrender and Fortune
Realizing that he had foolishly challenged the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Keśava Kāśmīrī abandoned his false prestige. The next morning, he returned to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and surrendered at His lotus feet. The Lord showered him with mercy, cutting the hard knot of his material attachments. The former champion gave up his competitive profession and became a highly exalted Vaiṣṇava in the Nimbārka-sampradāya.
- The next morning the poet came to Lord Caitanya and surrendered unto His lotus feet. The Lord bestowed His mercy upon him and cut off all his bondage to material attachment.
- He (Kesava Kasmiri) surrendered unto Him (Lord Caitanya) and later became a pure Vaisnava in the sampradaya of Nimbarka. He wrote Kaustubha-prabha, a commentary on the Vedanta commentary of the Nimbarka-sampradaya, which is known as the Parijata-bhasya.
- The champion (Kesava Kasmiri) surrendered unto the Lord (Caitanya), and the Lord favored him. One who is favored by the Lord is freed from material bondage, as stated in the Bhagavad-gita (Bhagavad-gita 4.9): tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti so ’rjuna.
- The poetic champion was certainly most fortunate. His life was successful by dint of his vast learning and erudite scholarship, and thus he attained the shelter of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Conclusion
The defeat of Keśava Kāśmīrī was not an act of mundane rivalry, but an act of divine compassion. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that material learning, when accompanied by pride, binds the soul to illusion. It was only when the champion's pride was thoroughly crushed by the supreme intellect of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu that his vast erudition became successful, culminating in ultimate surrender and pure devotional service.
