Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Kāśīśvara Gosāñi - The Lord's Protector
Every associate of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu appeared with a specific purpose and capacity to serve the Lord. While some were renowned for their scholarship and others for their musical abilities, Kāśīśvara Gosāñi was known for his physical strength. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the eternal associates of the Lord orchestrate their descents to facilitate His pastimes in every conceivable way, and Kāśīśvara's unique service was to act as the Lord's personal bodyguard in Jagannātha Purī.
Eternal Identity and Arrival in Purī
The arrival of Kāśīśvara in Purī was not an accident; it was the continuation of an eternal relationship. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes from the Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā that Kāśīśvara and Govinda were formerly the personal servants of Lord Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana, known as Bhṛṅgāra and Bhaṅgura. In this incarnation, they were initiated by Īśvara Purī, making them Godbrothers of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Out of deep respect for His spiritual master, the Lord honored them upon their arrival, but out of obedience to their guru, they insisted on serving the Lord directly.
- It is said in the Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika that the servant of Krsna in Vrndavana named Bhrngara descended as Kasisvara Gosani during the pastimes of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- In the Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (137) it is stated that the servants formerly named Bhrngara and Bhangura in Vrndavana became Kasisvara and Govinda in Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s pastimes. Govinda always engaged in the service of the Lord, even at great risk.
- Both Kasisvara and Govinda were Godbrothers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and thus the Lord duly honored them as soon as they arrived. But because Isvara Puri had ordered them to give Caitanya Mahaprabhu personal service, the Lord accepted their service.
- The next day, Kasisvara Gosani also came and remained with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who received him with great respect.
The Protector in the Temple
The Jagannātha temple was constantly surging with thousands of enthusiastic pilgrims. When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu visited the temple, He would often be overwhelmed with ecstatic love, making Him vulnerable to the pushing of the crowd. Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly describes how Kāśīśvara Gosāñi utilized his impressive physical strength in pure devotional service. He would walk just ahead of the Lord, firmly sweeping the throngs of people aside so the Lord could walk peacefully and remain untouched.
- Kasisvara Gosani was a very strong man, and therefore when Lord Caitanya visited the temple of Jagannatha, he used to protect the Lord from the crowds. Another of his duties was to distribute prasadam to the devotees after kirtana.
- When Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to the temple of Jagannatha, Kasisvara, being very strong, cleared the crowds aside with his hands so that Caitanya Mahaprabhu could pass untouched.
- Kasisvara used to usher Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu into the Jagannatha temple. He would precede the Lord into the crowd and keep the people from touching Him.
- When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to visit the temple, Kasisvara walked in front, checking the crowds of people, and Govinda walked in the rear, bringing the sannyasi's pitcher filled with water.
Distributing the Mercy
In addition to his duties as a vanguard, Kāśīśvara was heavily involved in the logistics of the Lord's pastimes, particularly regarding grand feasts. In his purports, Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how Kāśīśvara, along with other senior devotees like Svarūpa Dāmodara, was entrusted with the responsibility of distributing prasādam to the Vaiṣṇava community. He also occasionally shared meals with the Lord and Govinda when respectful hosts provided sufficient offerings.
- Svarupa Damodara, Jagadananda, Kasisvara and Sankara, along with Raghava and Damodara Pandita, took charge of distributing the prasadam.
- The four men - Svarupa Damodara, Jagadananda, Kasisvara and Sankara - distributed the prasadam continuously.
- To invite Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would cost 320 kaudis (small conchshells). This would provide lunch for three people, including Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and sometimes Kasisvara and Govinda.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu ordered Govinda and Kasisvara, "You may both take alms elsewhere to fill your bellies."
A Constant Companion
Kāśīśvara Gosāñi was an integral part of the Lord's inner circle in Purī. He was constantly present during the Lord's daily routine, moving seamlessly between his duties. The division of labor between him and Govinda was perfectly balanced: Govinda managed the internal affairs and the Lord's bodily needs, while Kāśīśvara handled the external demands of the eager public.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu remained at Jagannatha Puri, Nilacala, with Paramananda Puri, Jagadananda, Svarupa Damodara, Damodara Pandita, Govinda and Kasisvara. It was Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's daily practice to see Lord Jagannatha in the morning.
- After Ramananda Raya's arrival, Caitanya Mahaprabhu bestowed His mercy upon Kasi Misra and met Pradyumna Misra and other devotees. At that time three personalities - Paramananda Puri, Govinda and Kasisvara - came to see Lord Caitanya at Jagannatha Puri.
- Devotees like Svarupa Damodara, Gadadhara Pandita, Jagadananda, Kasisvara, Govinda and Vakresvara all came to meet the Lord.
- Govinda cared for the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, whereas Kasisvara went in front of the Lord when He went to see Jagannatha in the temple.
Conclusion
The presence of Kāśīśvara Gosāñi in the pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu beautifully demonstrates that every talent and physical attribute can be spiritualized. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that just as Kāśīśvara used his exceptional physical strength solely for the protection and service of the Supreme Lord, we too must engage whatever unique abilities we have been given in the unalloyed service of Kṛṣṇa and His devotees.
