Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Dāmodara Paṇḍita - The Loving Critic
Dāmodara Paṇḍita occupies a unique position among the associates of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Distinct from Svarūpa Dāmodara, he is known as the elder brother of Śaṅkara Paṇḍita and the tenth branch of the Caitanya tree. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights Dāmodara Paṇḍita's extraordinary boldness; his love for the Lord was so intense and protective that he did not hesitate to criticize or warn the Lord Himself if he felt the Lord's reputation was at risk.
Mood of Chastisement
The defining characteristic of Dāmodara Paṇḍita was his objectivity as a critic. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that he would not even spare Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu from his sharp words. On one occasion, Dāmodara Paṇḍita chastised the Lord for allowing the young son of a brāhmaṇa widow to visit Him frequently. Dāmodara feared that although the Lord was above suspicion, the public might misinterpret this affection. He warned the Lord, acting contrary to the etiquette of a brahmacārī instructing a sannyāsī.
- Damodara Pandita, the tenth branch of the Caitanya tree, was so elevated in love of Lord Caitanya that he once unhesitatingly chastised the Lord with strong words.
- Whenever there was anything that might touch or taint the character of the Lord, Damodara Pandita would immediately point it out, not even considering the exalted position of the Lord.

Lord's Reaction
Externally, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu rebuked Dāmodara Paṇḍita for his "impudence" and "nonsense" talk. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that internally, the Lord was very satisfied. He understood that Dāmodara's criticism was born of pure love and a desire to protect the Lord from blasphemy. The Lord even admitted, "I have no other intimate friend like Dāmodara Paṇḍita," acknowledging that such impudence is a sign of intimacy.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu thought, "This impudence is also a sign of pure love for Me. I have no other intimate friend like Damodara Pandita."
- Although Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu knew that Damodara Pandita was a pure and simple devotee, upon hearing this impudent talk the Lord said, "My dear Damodara, what nonsense are you speaking?"
- Actually Damodara Pandita was the eternal servant of the Lord (Caitanya). He could not punish the Lord at any time, nor had he any desire to, but he did give some warning to the Lord so that others would not blaspheme Him.
Service to Mother Śacī
Despite His appreciation, the Lord decided to send Dāmodara Paṇḍita away to Navadvīpa. The ostensible reason was to deliver messages to Mother Śacī and to protect her. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda implies that the Lord also wanted some distance from Dāmodara's constant checking. The Lord told him, "Remind mother Śacī in this way again and again and worship her lotus feet in My name."

- The Lord informed Damodara that His affection toward him was on the platform of awe and reverence. However, the Lord’s affection toward his younger brother, Sankara, was on the platform of pure love.
