Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Brahmānanda Bhāratī - Renouncing the Deerskin for Love
The relationship between Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Brahmānanda Bhāratī is a fascinating study in Vaishnava etiquette and the transformation of the heart. Brahmānanda Bhāratī was a senior sannyāsī and a Godbrother of the Lord's spiritual master, Śrī Īśvara Purī. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the Lord offered him the respect due to a superior, He simultaneously purified Brahmānanda of the last traces of impersonalism, establishing him firmly in the service of Kṛṣṇa.
Incident of the Deerskin
When Brahmānanda Bhāratī first arrived in Jagannātha Purī to meet the Lord, he was wearing a deerskin (mṛga-carma). Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that such attire is often associated with those bewildered by false prestige or impersonal asceticism. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu did not approve of this. Upon seeing him, the Lord pretended not to recognize him, asking Mukunda Datta, "Where is Brahmānanda Bhāratī?" When Mukunda pointed him out, the Lord remarked that He could not see him. Understanding the Lord's hint, Brahmānanda Bhāratī immediately discarded the deerskin and accepted the saffron robes of a Vaishnava sannyāsī. Only then did the Lord approach and offer His respectful obeisances.
- Seeing Brahmananda Bharati wearing the deerskin, Caitanya Mahaprabhu pretended not to see him. Instead, He asked Mukunda Datta, "Where is Brahmananda Bharati, My spiritual master."
- If a sannyasi who has renounced the world simply wears a deerskin and does not spiritually advance, he is bewildered by false prestige. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu did not like to see Brahmananda Bharati wearing a deerskin.
- From today on I shall not wear this deerskin. As soon as Brahmananda Bharati decided this, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, understanding his mind, immediately sent for the robes of a sannyasi.
From Brahman to Kṛṣṇa
Brahmānanda Bhāratī was historically inclined toward the path of jñāna and Brahman realization. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights his confession that upon seeing Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, his attachment shifted. He declared, "Since the beginning of my life I was attached to impersonal Brahman realization, but as soon as I saw You, I became very much attached to the Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa." This confirms the Lord's specific mission to convert the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs into pure devotees.
- Brahmananda Bharati said - Since the beginning of my life I was attached to impersonal Brahman realization, but as soon as I saw You (Caitanya), I became very much attached to the Personality of Godhead, Krsna.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu purified me by taking away my deerskin. This is proof that He is all-pervasive and all-powerful and that I am subordinate to Him.
- Without having ecstatic love for Krsna, one cannot see Him directly. Therefore through the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Brahmananda Bharati has acquired direct vision of the Lord.
Loving Debate
A recurring dynamic in their relationship was a playful, logical argument regarding the Lord's identity. Brahmānanda Bhāratī would assert that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa. In response, the Lord, adopting the mood of a humble disciple, would argue that Brahmānanda Bhāratī, being a great devotee, sees Kṛṣṇa everywhere. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya often acted as a mediator, concluding that both were correct: Brahmānanda Bhāratī was indeed seeing Kṛṣṇa (because Caitanya is Kṛṣṇa), and as a devotee, he was qualified to see Him.
- Brahmananda Bharati reversed the argument and took the position of a devotee, stating that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna. This means that the Lord was voluntarily defeated out of affection for His devotee.
- Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya was a mediator between Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Brahmananda Bharati, and his judgment was that an advanced devotee like Brahmananda Bharati was seeing Krsna by Krsna’s mercy.
- Brahmananda Bharati also wanted to prove that Jagannatha and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu are one, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but that to fulfill His mission Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared to be moving whereas Lord Jagannatha appeared to be inert.
Life in Jagannātha Purī
After his conversion and acceptance of the saffron cloth, Brahmānanda Bhāratī remained in Jagannātha Purī with the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes their daily interactions as full of love and mutual respect. They would often dine together, along with Paramānanda Purī and other intimate associates. Although Brahmānanda Bhāratī was socially superior as a Godbrother of the Lord's guru, he fully accepted the shelter of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
- After saying this, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took Brahmananda Bharati with Him to His residence. From that time on, Brahmananda Bharati remained with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- With Paramananda Puri and Brahmananda Bharati, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu sat down and accepted the prasadam. When He began to eat, so did all the Vaisnavas.
- Paramananda Puri and Brahmananda Bharati were both personally given garlands and sandalwood pulp from the very hands of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This increased their transcendental pleasure.
Conclusion
The interaction between Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Brahmānanda Bhāratī teaches us that true renunciation is not merely wearing a deerskin, but accepting the service of the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda illuminates how the Lord, through His personal association, transformed a Brahman-realized sannyāsī into a pure lover of Kṛṣṇa, proving that the taste of devotional service is far superior to the peace of liberation.
