Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya - The Servant and Protector
In the narratives of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's travels to Vṛndāvana, Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya plays a central role. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes him as a "bona fide devotee" who acted as the Lord's brahmacārī servant. His service was not merely functional; it was a loving protection of the Lord, whose intense spiritual emotions often rendered Him oblivious to the external world. Through Balabhadra's interactions with the Lord, we learn the nature of intimate service and the importance of strict adherence to scriptural authority.
Role of a Brahmacārī Servant
Although Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya was a learned scholar, he accepted the humble position of a menial servant for the Lord. He cooked simple vegetables gathered from the forest, which Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted with great satisfaction. This service allowed the Lord to travel freely, knowing His basic needs were managed by a loving associate who acted as His disciple.
- A sannyasi is supposed to be a spiritual master and a brahmacari his disciple. Balabhadra Bhattacarya acted as a brahmacari for Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu when the Lord toured Mathura and Vrndavana.
- Balabhadra Bhattacarya used to cook all kinds of vegetables gathered from the forest, and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was very pleased to accept these preparations.
- The two persons who accompanied Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to Jagannatha Puri (Nilacala) were Balabhadra Bhattacarya and Damodara Pandita.
- Thus Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu accepted the request of Svarupa Damodara Pandita and agreed to take Balabhadra Bhattacarya with Him.
Protecting the Lord in Ecstasy
Traveling with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was a task requiring immense vigilance. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights incidents where the Lord, overwhelmed by love for Kṛṣṇa, would act unpredictably. Upon seeing the River Yamunā, the Lord jumped into the water. Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya, acting as a guardian, hastily caught the Lord and pulled Him to safety, fearing what might happen if the Lord were alone in Vṛndāvana.
- As soon as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw the river Yamuna, He threw Himself into it. Balabhadra Bhattacarya hastily caught the Lord and very carefully raised Him up again.
- Balabhadra Bhattacarya said, "Since I was present today, it was possible for me to pull the Lord up. But if He starts to drown at Vrndavana, who will help Him."
- When Krsnadasa saw that Caitanya Mahaprabhu was drowning, he cried and shouted very loudly. Balabhadra Bhattacarya immediately came and pulled the Lord out.
- It would be good if we could get Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu out of Vrndavana. That is my final conclusion.
Chastisement at Kāliya-daha
Even a personal associate can be momentarily bewildered. Śrīla Prabhupāda discusses the incident where Balabhadra wanted to see a rumored appearance of Kṛṣṇa on the Kāliya snake at night. He asked the Lord's permission, but Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu chastised him—even slapping him—to bring him to his senses. This incident serves as a crucial lesson that one should not be influenced by the "words of fools" but should see through the eyes of śāstra.
- He (Lord Caitanya) therefore chastised him (Balabhadra Bhattacarya, by being influenced by the words of fools wanted to see Krsna directly by going to Kaliya-daha), slapping him just to bring him to a real sense of Krsna consciousness.
- When Balabhadra Bhattacarya asked to see Krsna at Kaliya-daha, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu mercifully slapped him, saying, "You are a learned scholar, but you have become a fool, being influenced by the statements of other fools."
- Maya is so strong that even a person like Balabhadra Bhattacarya, who was constantly staying with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, was influenced by the words of fools.
- Although Balabhadra Bhattacarya was personally serving Lord Krsna in His role as a devotee (Caitanya Mahaprabhu), he mistook Lord Krsna for an ordinary man and an ordinary man for Lord Krsna because he did not follow the rules set down by sastra and guru.
Return and Documentation
Upon their return to Jagannātha Purī, Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya served as the primary link between the Lord's travel pastimes and the other devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Sanātana Gosvāmī recorded the details of the Lord's itinerary based on Balabhadra's report. He also shared the miraculous events of the journey, such as the tigers and elephants dancing in kīrtana, bringing life back to the devotees in Purī who were morose in separation.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu happily returned to Jagannatha Puri in the company of His servant, Balabhadra Bhattacarya. As previously, the Lord performed many pleasing pastimes with the forest animals.
- Sanatana Gosvami noted from Balabhadra Bhattacarya all the villages, rivers and hills where Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu had performed His pastimes.
- Hearing news of the Lord's arrival from Balabhadra Bhattacarya, hordes of devotees became so happy that they seemed to be getting their lives back. It was as though their consciousness had returned to their bodies. Their senses also became agitated.
- Balabhadra reported that Mahaprabhu had shown a good many miracles on His way to Puri, such as making tigers and elephants dance on hearing the name of Krsna.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda presents Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya not just as a historical figure, but as an example of intimate service. His life shows that serving the Lord requires practical care, constant vigilance, and the humility to accept correction. The Lord acknowledged this dedication by embracing him and saying, "It is only by your kindness that I am now so happy."
