Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu - The Combined Form of Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is not a different personality from the Supreme Lord; rather, He is the profound unification of the supreme enjoyer, Kṛṣṇa, and His supreme pleasure potency, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that desiring to experience the unparalleled heights of pure devotion and ecstatic love that Rādhārāṇī feels for Him, Kṛṣṇa descended in this combined form. Through this most merciful incarnation, the absolute, sweet nature of divine love is simultaneously relished by the Lord and distributed to the world.
The Eternal Identity and Separation of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa
Ontologically, Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are the exact same eternal identity, representing the supreme energetic and the supreme energy. To facilitate the dynamic exchange of transcendental mellows, or rasas, They eternally separate into two distinct forms. As clarified in Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings, it is this very same supreme energy that again unites into one absolute form as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
- Although Radha and Krsna are one in Their identity, They separated Themselves eternally. Now these two transcendental identities have again united, in the form of Sri Krsna Caitanya.
- The loving affairs of Radha and Krsna are transcendental manifestations of the internal pleasure-giving potency. Although They are one in identity, previously They separated Themselves. Now these two identities have again united, in the form of Caitanya.
- When Krsna wants pleasure, He cannot accept the inferior energy. The same superior energy, Krsna, is divided into two. That is Radha and Krsna. And again when They unite, that is Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- When Krsna desired to enjoy His pleasure potency, He manifested Himself in the separate form of Radharani, and when He wanted to understand Himself through the agency of Radha, He united with Radharani, and that unification is called Lord Caitanya.
The Purpose of Their Divine Unification
As the supreme enjoyer, Kṛṣṇa is the reservoir of all pleasure, yet He was unable to fully gauge the depth of Rādhārāṇī's love for Him. To comprehend this supreme devotion, He accepted Her emotions, mood, and golden bodily luster—a combination Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies as Kṛṣṇa perfectly playing the part of His own greatest devotee.
- Because Krsna was unable to estimate the pleasure potency of Radharani, He decided to accept the role of Radharani, and that combination is Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- To know the transcendental pleasure of loving Krsna, Lord Krsna Himself appeared as Lord Caitanya, accepting the emotions and bodily luster of Srimati Radharani.
- Lord Caitanya is Krsna with the feelings of Radharani; in other words, He is a combination of Radha and Krsna. It is therefore said, sri-krsna-caitanya radha-krsna nahe anya.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Radha-Krsna combination. But He is playing the part of Radharani to understand Krsna. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
The Revelation of His Combined Form
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu normally kept His inner identity concealed, acting purely as a devotee to teach by example. However, to His most intimate associates, He revealed His true ontological nature. Before Rāmānanda Rāya, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes, He manifested His ultimate divine form, confirming that He was the absolute integration of both Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.
- Being very satisfied, Lord Caitanya smiled and showed Ramananda His real form as the combination of Sri Radha and Krsna. Thus Lord Caitanya was Sri Krsna Himself with the external features of Srimati Radharani.
- Krsna is the reservoir of all pleasure, and Radharani is the personification of ecstatic love of Godhead. These two forms had combined as one in Caitanya. This being the case, Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu revealed His real form to Ramananda Raya.
- Upon seeing this unique feature of Lord Caitanya (as the combination of Sri Radha and Krsna), Ramananda Raya fainted and fell on the floor. Lord Caitanya then touched him, and he came to his senses.
- Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is the combination of Srimati Radharani and Krsna, and the gopi Visakha is a principal gopi assisting Srimati Radharani. Thus the natural love between Ramananda Raya and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu awakened and they embraced.
The Vision of the Pure Devotees
Advanced Vaiṣṇavas perfectly understand that there is zero difference between worshiping Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and worshiping Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda asserts that to see any distinction between the combined form and the separated forms is a symptom of illusion; instead, pure devotees worship Lord Caitanya with the full realization of His complete, dual nature.
- An advanced devotee can understand sri-krsna-caitanya, radha-krsna nahe anya. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, being a combination of Krsna and Radha, is nondifferent from Radha-Krsna combined. This is explained by Svarupa Damodara Gosvami (CC Adi 1.5).
- The Gaudiya Vaisnavas never differentiate between Radha-Krsna and Lord Caitanya. They say that since Lord Caitanya is the combined form of Radha-Krsna, He is not different from Radha and Krsna.
- Sri-krsna-caitanya radha-krsna nahe anya: in the vision of a perfect devotee, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is a combination of Radha and Krsna. One who sees Lord Caitanya to be different from Krsna is under the illusory energy of the Lord.
- Some misled people put forward the argument that since Caitanya appeared as Radha and Krsna combined, there is no necessity of worshiping Radha and Krsna. Such differentiation by so-called devotees of Lord Caitanya is considered disruptive by pure devotees.
Conclusion
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the ultimate manifestation of the Absolute Truth, embodying both the supreme enjoyer, Kṛṣṇa, and the supreme energy of devotion, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. While eternally one, They separate to exchange divine love, and have once again reunited in the golden form of Lord Caitanya so that Kṛṣṇa Himself can taste the sweetness of Rādhārāṇī’s ecstatic devotion. As Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes, pure Vaiṣṇavas recognize this profound truth, seeing no difference between the worship of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa and the worship of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, whose very essence is the perfect unification of divine love.
