Śrī Caitanya's Feelings - The Supreme Ecstasy of Separation from Kṛṣṇa
The transcendental feelings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are the deepest subject matter in all of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava theology. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, although Lord Caitanya is Kṛṣṇa Himself, He descended to taste the supreme loving ecstasy of His greatest devotee, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Therefore, His entire life—especially His final years in Jagannātha Purī—was defined by vipralambha-sevā, the agonizing and beautiful feeling of separation from Kṛṣṇa. These intense feelings produced unprecedented symptoms of mahābhāva, causing Him to weep constantly, experience transcendental madness, and feel a single moment to be like an eternity. Whether He was gazing at Lord Jagannātha during the Ratha-yātrā or crying in the Gambhīrā with His intimate associates, every emotion He exhibited was fully saturated with pure love of God. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord's internal feelings of separation were perfectly matched by His external feelings of boundless compassion for the fallen souls of Kali-yuga. By meditating on the feelings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, a sincere devotee can awaken their own dormant love for the Supreme Lord.
The Mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī
The foundational reality of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's identity is that He is the Supreme Lord fully absorbed in the emotional propensities of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that to understand the Lord's feelings, one must recognize this rādhā-bhāva-mūrti. He constantly experienced the same devastating waves of separation that Rādhārāṇī felt when Kṛṣṇa departed from Vṛndāvana to Mathurā.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself, but He is Krsna accepting the propensities of Radharani. Radharani is always feeling separation from Krsna, and similarly, in the position of Radharani. Lord Caitanya was always feeling that separation.
- Lord Caitanya’s heart was full of the feelings of Srimati Radharani, and His appearance resembled Hers. Svarupa Damodara has explained His attitude as radha-bhava-murti, the attitude of Radharani.
- Being always absorbed in the ecstasy of Srimati Radharani, Sri Caitanya felt the same separation from Krsna that Radharani felt when Krsna left Vrndavana and went to Mathura. This ecstatic feeling is very helpful in attaining love of God in separation.
- In the same spirit of ecstasy, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu recited that verse, and as soon as He did so, He felt like Srimati Radharani.
The Agony of Separation
The ultimate expression of pure love is found in separation, and Lord Caitanya demonstrated this at the highest conceivable level. In His famous Śikṣāṣṭakam, He recorded His own feelings, stating that the world appeared entirely void without Kṛṣṇa. His agony was so intense that He often exhibited symptoms of divine madness, crying day and night, and even throwing Himself into the ocean in a desperate search for His beloved.
- He (Caitanya) prays in His Siksastaka (7): O Govinda! Feeling Your separation, I am considering a moment to be like twelve years or more. Tears are flowing from My eyes like torrents of rain, and I am feeling all vacant in the world in Your absence.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu in particular felt separation from Krsna very deeply, exactly like a lover who is dejected in separation from the beloved.
- Day and night Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu felt separation from Krsna. Manifesting symptoms of this separation, He cried and talked very inconsistently, like a madman.
- Feeling separation from Krsna, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu would throw Himself into the sea. Sometimes He would leave His room in the dead of night and disappear. No one would know where He had gone, but all the while He was searching after Krsna.
Feelings Toward Lord Jagannātha
For Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the Deity of Lord Jagannātha was directly Kṛṣṇa Himself. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, during the Ratha-yātrā festival, the Lord's feelings mirrored those of the gopīs meeting Kṛṣṇa at Kurukṣetra. Conversely, when Lord Jagannātha was hidden from view following the bathing ceremony, Lord Caitanya felt such agonizing separation that He had to leave Purī and travel to Ālālanātha just to cope with the pain.
- At those times, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would visit Lord Jagannatha. Then His feelings exactly corresponded to those of the gopis when they saw Krsna at Kuruksetra after long separation. Krsna had come to Kuruksetra with His brother and sister to visit.
- Due to separation from Lord Jagannatha, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu felt the same great anxiety the gopis feel in separation from Krsna. In this condition He gave up all association and went to Alalanatha.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu usually saw Lord Jagannatha from a distance, standing behind the column of Garuda. But because he had not seen Lord Jagannatha for fifteen days, Caitanya Mahaprabhu felt great separation from Him.
- Ratha-yatra festival is a feeling festival for the Vaisnavas. Lord Caitanya taught us how to feel separation of God. Lord Caitanya never taught us that He had seen God, but He felt the separation of God very severely.
The Solace of Intimate Associates
The burning flames of the Lord's separation were so intense that He required constant spiritual pacification. In the privacy of His room at night, He would completely open His heart to His most intimate associates, Svarūpa Dāmodara and Rāmānanda Rāya. By expertly singing the poetry of Caṇḍīdāsa and Vidyāpati, and by discussing the sweet pastimes of Kṛṣṇa, these devotees literally kept the Lord alive amidst His ecstatic agonies.
- When the Lord acutely felt pangs of separation from Krsna, only Sri Ramananda Raya' talks about Krsna and the sweet songs of Svarupa Damodara kept Him alive.
- As Subala always assisted Krsna in His dealings with Radharani in krsna-lila, so Ramananda Raya assisted Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in His feelings of separation from Krsna.
- These intimate associates (Sri Ramananda Raya and Sri Svarupa Damodara Gosvami) of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu helped the Lord very much in the pastimes in which He felt like Radharani.
- At night, Lord Caitanya would reveal to Svarupa Damodara and Ramananda Raya the ecstatic feelings of His mind.
Compassion for the Fallen Souls
Alongside His intense internal feelings for Kṛṣṇa, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu felt immense compassion for the suffering souls of the material world. It was this feeling of mercy that prompted Him to take sannyāsa, aiming to deliver even the blasphemers and atheists. His greatest desire was to see the Hare Krsna mahā-mantra spread to every corner of the globe.
- The kutarkikas, nindakas, pasandis and adhama paduyas all avoided the benefit of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s movement of developing love of Godhead. Caitanya felt compassion for them, and it is for this reason that He decided to accept the sannyasa order.
- The desire of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is that all over the world everyone, in every village and every town, know of Him and His sankirtana movement. These are the inner feelings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- The special function of Srila Rupa Gosvami is to establish the feelings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. These feelings are His desires that His special mercy be spread throughout the world in this Kali-yuga.
- By the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the same feelings are being spread all over the world by the servants of the Gosvamis, and devotees who are pure and simple will appreciate this attempt.
Conclusion
The transcendental feelings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu beautifully illustrate the absolute zenith of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. As the Supreme Lord experiencing the supreme devotion of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, His life was an unbroken chain of ecstatic agonies, divine madness, and overwhelming joy in separation. Yet, amidst His absorption in the highest realms of vipralambha-sevā, He never forgot the fallen souls of Kali-yuga. By establishing the saṅkīrtana movement, He translated His own divine feelings into a practical, accessible path of deliverance for all humanity. As Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently concludes, anyone who sincerely assists in spreading this movement is directly satisfying the inner feelings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and is guaranteed to receive His supreme mercy.
