Śrī Caitanya's Condition - Symptoms of Transcendental Separation
The transcendental condition of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu represents the highest peak of spiritual emotion, known as mahābhāva. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, the Lord appeared in this world to teach the process of devotional service through His own example, specifically by adopting the mood of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in Her intense separation from Kṛṣṇa. This state of vipralambha-sevā often manifested in profound physical and psychological symptoms that appeared like illness or unconsciousness to the uninformed, but were actually the most advanced stages of divine ecstasy. Throughout His life, whether in His comfortable material condition as a householder or His later stages as a sannyāsī, every aspect of His condition served to demonstrate the depth of pure love for the Supreme Lord.
Ecstatic Trances and Physical Transformations
Upon seeing the deity of Lord Jagannātha or hearing the names of Kṛṣṇa, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu would often fall into a deep trance. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that during these times, His body would exhibit symptoms that baffled even the most learned scholars, such as Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, who initially mistook the Lord's condition for a physical ailment.
- Arriving at the home of Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, everyone saw the Lord lying unconscious. Seeing Him in this condition, Gopinatha Acarya became very unhappy, but at the same time he was happy just to see the Lord.
- Examining the body of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sarvabhauma saw that His abdomen was not moving and that He was not breathing. Seeing His condition, the Bhattacarya became very anxious.
- It appeared that only skin covered His elongated joints. Seeing the Lord's condition, all the devotees were very unhappy.
- Upon seeing Lord Jagannatha, Caitanya Mahaprabhu became ecstatic and fell unconscious, and Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya has taken Him to his home in this condition.
The Mood of Separation and Devotee Anxiety
The condition of the Lord was characterized by a deep sense of separation, identical to the feelings of the gopīs after Kṛṣṇa left for Mathurā. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord's intimate associates would feel intense anxiety and shed tears when witnessing these extreme states of spiritual absorption.
- When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu felt separation from Krsna, His condition exactly corresponded to that of the gopis in Vrndavana after Krsna's departure for Mathura.
- Saying this, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu began to weep. When all the Vaisnavas saw the Lord's condition, they also wept.
- At first they were overjoyed to see Him, but when they saw His condition, all the devotees, headed by Svarupa Damodara Gosvami, were very anxious.
- When Svarupa Damodara and the other devotees reached the spot and saw the condition of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they began to cry.
Levels of Spiritual Consciousness
The Lord's internal state was often divided by His devotees into different categories depending on how much external awareness He exhibited. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that even when the Lord appeared to be in a "normal" condition, He was often in ardha-bāhya, a state of half-external consciousness where He was still deeply connected to His internal pastimes.
- When the Lord was deeply absorbed in internal consciousness but He nevertheless exhibited some external consciousness, devotees called His condition ardha-bahya, or half-external consciousness.
- This sannyasi sometimes falls unconscious due to the influence of a disease. Please sit down here, and you will see that He will very soon regain consciousness and His normal condition.
- Hearing the description of His condition while He had lain near the Simha-dvara, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was very much astonished. He said, "I do not remember any of these things."
- After hearing of these wonderful occurrences, everyone came to see Him there. When they saw the beauty of the Lord and His ecstatic condition, they were all struck with wonder.
Conditions for Receiving the Lord's Mercy
A unique aspect of the Lord's condition relates to the terms He sets for delivering sinful people. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while Lord Caitanya is the most munificent, He demands a sincere transformation from those He initiates, specifically the vow to never repeat their past sins.
- Lord Caitanya accepted Jagai and Madhai on condition they would not commit further sinful activities. So all our students should be careful in the matter of violating the four principles and at the same time must carry on the chanting process rigidly.
- Lord Caitanya accepts all kinds of sinful persons on the one condition that they promise not to indulge in sinful habits after being spiritually initiated by the bona fide spiritual master.
- So far material condition, He (Caitanya Mahaprabhu) had His very affectionate mother. He was the only son of His mother; all brothers and sister died. And His wife Laksmi-priya died first, then He married, second time, Visnu-priya. So very happy life.
- Upon seeing the condition of the Lord, all the devotees became very anxious. Then, suddenly, the Lord got up and began to make thundering sounds.
Conclusion
The various conditions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu reveal both the peak of transcendental emotion and the depth of His compassion for the fallen souls. His physical manifestations of ecstasy were not material diseases but proofs of His internal absorption in the mood of Rādhā-bhāva. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that by understanding the Lord's condition of separation and adhering to the moral conditions He set for His disciples, one can truly enter into the path of pure devotional service. Ultimately, the Lord's miraculous states were intended to awaken the sleeping souls to the beauty and intensity of a life dedicated to Kṛṣṇa.
