A Spiritual Master Helps Us Cross Material Existence
The material world is a place of constant perplexity, where the conditioned soul is bound tightly by the laws of nature. To escape this entanglement, one requires the powerful intervention of a superior authority. The Supreme Lord mercifully provides this assistance by manifesting externally as the spiritual master. Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that without accepting the help of a bona fide guru, all independent attempts at self-realization are ultimately futile.
Help from Within and Without
The Supreme Personality of Godhead does not leave the sincere soul to struggle alone. He provides a dual system of guidance to ensure the devotee's success. Internally, He acts as the Caitya-guru, giving direction from within the heart. Externally, He sends His representative, the spiritual master, to offer practical instructions. This twofold help fortifies the devotee against all material illusions.
- Krsna helps as the guru, or spiritual master, from within and without. From without He helps the devotee as His representative, and from within He talks personally with the pure devotee and gives him instructions by which he may return home, back to Godhead.
- A fortunate person is fortified by both Krsna and the spiritual master. He is helped from within by Krsna and from without by the spiritual master. Both are prepared to help the sincere living being become free from material bondage.
- This Krsna consciousness movement is meant for the purpose of understanding God. The spiritual master is the living representative of Krsna who helps externally, and Krsna as Supersoul helps internally.
- Krishna as Paramatma Who is sitting within your heart is now dictating. Krishna is so kind that He wants to help us as Spiritual Master in two ways.
Solving Life's Perplexities
When confronted with the difficult problems of life, mundane scholarship and high positions offer no real solutions. Even great personalities like Arjuna found themselves entirely bewildered until they sought superior guidance. The spiritual master possesses the perfect knowledge required to clear away all confusion. By submissively accepting his help, one's path becomes fully illuminated.
- Although Arjuna was putting forward so many arguments based on knowledge of the principles of religion and moral codes, it appears that he was unable to solve his real problem without the help of the spiritual master, Lord Sri Krsna.
- It was impossible for him (Arjuna) to solve his perplexities without the help of a spiritual master like Lord Krsna.
- Academic knowledge, scholarship, high position, etc., are all useless in solving the problems of life; help can only be given by a spiritual master like Krsna.
- One should have a complete understanding of this chapter (Bhagavad-gita Chapter 13) with the help of the spiritual master.
Deliverance from Material Bondage
The cycle of birth and death is a fierce ocean of nescience, impossible to cross by one's own strength. The spiritual master acts as the captain of the ship, expertly navigating the disciple to safety. He pulls the fallen soul out of the deep well of household entanglement using the strong rope of spiritual instructions. Without this direct assistance, release from material bondage is a mere dream.
- Only Lord Krsna, or His bona fide representative the spiritual master, can release the conditioned soul. Without such superior help, one cannot be freed from the bondage of material nature.
- For such a man (who is entangled in household affairs) to get out is extremely difficult unless he is helped by a strong person, the spiritual master, who helps the fallen person with the strong rope of spiritual instructions.
- The goal of life is to become a devotee of Lord Krsna so that one may be freed from the bondage of material existence. The spiritual master helps the disciple attain this stage by developing Krsna consciousness.
- Because You (Visnu) are very merciful to Your other devotees, You accept this method (of acaryas leaving behind on earth the method by which they cross the fierce ocean of nescience) to help them.
The Folly of Independent Endeavor
In the modern age, many inexperienced people falsely claim that one can achieve self-realization independently. They proudly decry the necessity of a guru and attempt to forge their own path. However, the Vedic scriptures strictly prohibit jumping over the spiritual master to reach Kṛṣṇa directly. True advancement is completely dependent on receiving and honoring superior help.
- There are many inexperienced persons who advocate self-realization without the help of a spiritual master. They decry the necessity of the spiritual master and try themselves to take his place.
- Without spiritual master's help, nobody can become self-realized. Our Vaisnava philosophy does not allow that you shall become self-realized by your own endeavor.
- We should not jump over Krsna without the help of guru. That is not possible. You must go through. Because Krsna says, "Actually one who is serious to understand higher transcendental subject matter, he must approach guru." These are Vedic injunction.
- If one is sincere, he will take advantage of guru's mercy and Krsna's mercy, and then he will be perfect. This is called bhakti-yoga. Not that "I am now very much advanced. I don't require any help from my guru," as somebody are doing. This is rascaldom.
Receiving the Second Birth
Taking shelter of a spiritual master initiates a profound transformation within the disciple. This process is compared to a second birth, where the guru acts as the father and the Vedic knowledge as the mother. Through this divine assistance, the disciple leaves behind an animalistic existence and enters into true human consciousness. This spiritual birth is the prerequisite for returning back to Godhead.
- The Vedic knowledge is considered mother, and the spiritual master is considered the father. And by the help of the spiritual master, when one gets into transcendental knowledge, that is called second birth.
- If one does not develop knowledge and practical application of knowledge through the help of a spiritual master and the sastras - if one misuses this opportunity - then in the next life he is sure to be born in a species of nonmoving living entities.
- It is guaranteed human life? - somebody asking. Even if it guaranteed, why should you take the chance of another life? Finish this business in this life. Take help from Krsna, take help from books, take from your spiritual master.
- From without, by these books of knowledge, by the instruction of spiritual master, you will get help from without. And as soon as you are serious to follow, then you will get instruction from within also, within.
Direct Help of the Lord
Because the spiritual master is the most confidential servant of Kṛṣṇa, receiving his help is completely non-different from receiving the Lord's direct intervention. The guru never acts on his own accord; he simply transmits the pure mercy of the Supreme. Therefore, a sincere disciple considers the spiritual master's assistance as the ultimate grace. To serve and accept this help is the perfection of spiritual life.
- To get the assistance and help of a bona fide spiritual master means to receive the direct help of the Lord Himself.
- I consider you all as representative of my Guru maharaj to help me in this helpless condition. My Godbrothers did not help me but my Spiritual Master has helped me.
- Without the help of such a devotee spiritual master, one cannot make progress in the transcendental science of the Lord.
- As confirmed in the Vedic injunctions, yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau (SU 6.23). One should have complete faith in the guru, who helps the disciple make progress in spiritual life.
Conclusion
The journey out of the material world is impossible without the guiding hand of a superior authority. By manifesting internally as the Supersoul and externally as the spiritual master, the Supreme Lord ensures that no sincere soul is ever left helpless. Śrīla Prabhupāda proved this reality by personally extending his help to millions across the globe, throwing the strong rope of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to pull us all from the ocean of nescience.
