Understanding the Transcendental Nature of God's Pleasure
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Absolute Truth is the supreme enjoyer of all activities. While conditioned souls suffer under the laws of karma by striving for independent enjoyment, the pure devotee understands that dedicating one's life to the pleasure of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the key to unlimited spiritual happiness and liberation.
Pleasing the Supreme Lord
The fundamental mistake of the conditioned soul is attempting to enjoy independently of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that all activities—whether social, occupational, or religious—must be directed toward the pleasure of Lord Viṣṇu; otherwise, they simply entangle the performer in further material bondage.
- Another name of Lord Visnu is Yajnesvara. In Bhagavad-gita it is said that all activities should be performed as Visnu-yajna, for the pleasure of Lord Visnu. Unless we please Him, whatever we do is the cause of our bondage in the material world.
- In Bhagavad-gita, it is said that anything performed in the material world for any reason other than for the pleasure of Lord Visnu causes further bondage for the performer.
- The aim of all such (advancement of learning, economic development, philosophical research etc) acts and endeavors must be the pleasure of the Lord and not the satisfaction of any other identity, individual or collective.
- Everyone should engage in devotional service through Krsna consciousness. If one wants to be happy and peaceful in his position, either as a householder or citizen or member of human society, one must promote devotional service for pleasure of the Lord.
The Lord's Pleasure in Pure Devotion
The Supreme Lord cannot be bribed by material wealth or mundane qualifications. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord accepts the essence of one's love and devotion, being perfectly pleased even by the simplest offering of a leaf or water if it is presented with a sincere heart.
- Although He (the Supreme Personality of Godhead) is full in Himself, He nonetheless becomes pleased when His devotee offers Him patram puspam phalam toyam (BG 9.26) - a leaf, flower, fruit or water - in devotion.
- If any devotee offers Him even a small leaf, or a flower or water, if it is offered with love and affection, the Lord accepts it and is pleased.
- Lord Visnu is not satisfied simply by a ritualistic adherence to Vedic instructions; He is actually pleased when one attains the stage of devotional service.
- My dear friends, O sons of the demons, you cannot please the Supreme Personality of Godhead by becoming perfect brahmanas, demigods or great saints or by becoming perfectly good in etiquette or vast learning. None of these qualifications can awaken the pleasure of the Lord.
The Reciprocation of Pleasure
When a devotee dedicates everything to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Lord returns that affection manifold. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Śrī Kṛṣṇa personally assumes the responsibility of maintaining His surrendered devotees, granting them inner fulfillment, supreme protection, and ultimately His own divine association.
- If the Lord is pleased with someone, what is left for him to achieve? If one has been recognized by the Lord, even if he does not ask the Lord for anything, the Lord, who is within everyone, supplies him whatever he wants.
- If the Lord, by His own pleasure, appears before the devotee, the devotee feels extremely happy, as Dhruva Maharaja felt when he personally saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- A pure devotee becomes attached to one of the eternal forms of the Lord, and the Lord is pleased to appear before him in the form desired.
- As we sincerely try to improve our chanting for the pleasure of Krishna, Krishna reciprocates and we feel our greatest pleasure which is devotional service to the Lord. So, you may continue with this method, it is very nice and approved by me.
The Transcendental Reservoir of Pleasure
God is not merely a creator or a strict judge; He is the absolute center of enjoyment. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the Supreme Lord is ātmārāma—fully self-satisfied—yet He expands His energies and descends into the material world simply to relish the loving exchanges with His pure devotees.
- The Lord is by nature the reservoir of all pleasures, and because He wants to enjoy pleasure, there must be energies to give Him pleasure or supply Him the impetus for pleasure. This is the perfect philosophical understanding of the Absolute Truth.
- The Lord is not only the creator and destroyer of the material manifestations of His different energies. He is more than a simple creator and destroyer, for there is His feature of ananda, or His pleasure feature.
- He (Krsna) is atmarama, self-satisfied; He can derive all pleasure by Himself, without anyone’s help. But when the Lord descends to play the part of a human being, He plays a role either as a husband, son, friend or enemy in full perfection.
- The supreme atma, or soul, is the Lord Himself, and the minute atma is the living entity. The supreme atma, or Paramatma, alone maintains all the individual minute beings, for the Supreme Lord wants to derive pleasure out of their affection.
Descending for His Own Sweet Pleasure
The appearance of the Supreme Lord in the material world is never dictated by the strict laws of karma. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that unlike the conditioned souls who are forced to take birth, the Lord descends entirely out of His own sweet pleasure to enact His glorious pastimes and protect the universe.
- The Lord’s appearance or birth is not like that of an ordinary man, who is forced to accept a material body according to his past deeds. The Lord’s appearance is explained in the Second Chapter: He appears out of His own sweet pleasure.
- The Lord is free to do whatever He likes. Therefore this verse (SB 10.2.39) says, vina vinodam bata tarkayamahe. It is only for His pleasure that He comes although He does not need to come.
- When the Lord wants to take pleasure in pastimes, He comes down to this material world and acts like a human being, thus showing His wonderful, glorious activities to please the devotees.
- Your appearance in this fearsome form is Your pastime for Your own pleasure. Such an incarnation is always meant for the protection and improvement of the universe.
The Sweetness of Intimate Affection
Although the Supreme Lord is the majestic master of the universe, He does not relish awe and reverence as much as He relishes spontaneous love. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the Lord takes the greatest pleasure when His pure devotees address Him by intimate names or even chide Him in the mood of pure bhakti.
- The Lord takes great pleasure in being addressed as Devaki-nandana ("the son of Devaki"), Nanda-nandana ("the son of Nanda"), Yasoda-nandana ("the son of Yasoda"), Dasarathi ("the son of King Dasaratha"), Janaki-natha ("the husband of Janaki"), and so on.
- The pleasure one gives the Lord by addressing Him by such names (Devaki-nandana etc.) is many, many times greater than the pleasure He enjoys when He is addressed as Paramesvara, or anything of that nature, which indicate volumes of awe and veneration.
- The Supreme Lord cannot have any enemy, nor can a so-called enemy harm Him because He is ajita, or unconquerable. But still He takes pleasure when His pure devotee beats Him like an enemy or rebukes Him from a superior position.
- The Lord’s pleasure in parakiya-rasa is superior to His pleasure in svakiya-rasa.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully establishes that the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is centered entirely around the principle of God's pleasure. Because the living entities are parts and parcels of the Supreme Lord, their inherent nature is to serve the complete whole. When one acts independently for personal gratification, it leads only to frustration and the harsh reactions of karma. However, by shifting the focus to satisfying Lord Viṣṇu through unalloyed bhakti, the devotee taps into the Lord's infinite reservoir of ānanda (bliss). The Supreme Lord, being the ultimate enjoyer, reciprocating with His devotees, effortlessly provides for all their needs and reveals His beautiful, eternal form. Ultimately, the perfection of existence is found not in seeking our own pleasure, but in dedicating every action to the transcendental pleasure of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
