Understanding the Supreme Nature of God's Playing
Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the Absolute Truth is not a static force, but an eternally youthful person who enjoys dynamic, blissful pastimes. By observing and understanding the transcendental playing of the Supreme Lord, especially in His original form as Śrī Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana, the conditioned soul can awaken their dormant spiritual consciousness and return back to Godhead.
The Transcendental Child of Vṛndāvana
The most intimate and endearing feature of the Supreme Lord is His childhood pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Lord Balarāma immerse Themselves in youthful play, hiding Their majestic opulence to exchange the sweetest, most unalloyed affection with the residents of Vraja.
- After a short time passed, both brothers, Rama and Krsna, began to crawl on the ground of Vraja with the strength of Their hands and knees and thus enjoy Their childhood play - SB 10.8.21.
- Krsna and Balarama passed Their childhood age in Vrajabhumi by engaging in activities of childish play, such as playing hide-and-seek, constructing a make-believe bridge on the ocean, and jumping here and there like monkeys - SB 10.11.59.
- Not far away from Their residential quarters, both Krsna and Balarama, equipped with all kinds of playthings, played with other cowherd boys and began to tend the small calves - SB 10.11.38.
- Sometimes, Their ankle bells tinkling, They (Krsna and Rama) would play football with fruits like bael and amalaki. Sometimes They would cover Themselves with blankets and imitate cows and bulls and fight with one another, roaring loudly - SB 10.11.39-40.
Playing as a Human Being
When the Lord descends, He perfectly mimics the behavior of the living entities He comes to save. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord plays the role of a human being so flawlessly that mundane speculators deride Him, failing to recognize that His human-like playing is actually an exhibition of His supreme causeless mercy.
- The Lord is supremely perfect, and whenever He enacts His transcendental pastimes as a son, a rival or an object of enmity, He plays the part so perfectly that even pure devotees like Uddhava are bewildered.
- When the Lord (Krsna) descends on this material world by His all-merciful energy, He plays like a human being, and therefore it appears that the Lord is partial to His devotees only, but that is not a fact.
- He (Krsna) is atmarama, self-satisfied; He can derive all pleasure by Himself, without anyone’s help. But when the Lord descends to play the part of a human being, He plays a role either as a husband, son, friend or enemy in full perfection.
- To discourage such imaginative speculation, He descends and exhibits Himself as He is, as Syamasundara. Unfortunately, the less intelligent deride Him because He comes as one of us and plays with us as a human being.
The Omnipotent Actor
Despite accepting various roles, the Lord's absolute power remains undiminished. Śrīla Prabhupāda likens the Supreme Lord to an expert actor who can effortlessly play the part of a vulnerable child, a fierce boar, or a noble warrior without ever losing His divine identity and supreme opulence.
- The Lord is omnipotent; simply by His will He can perform anything and everything. When the Lord appeared as Lord Krsna, He played the part of the son of Yasoda and Nanda, and He lifted the Govardhana Hill, although lifting a hill is not His concern.
- The foolish with a poor fund of knowledge cannot know the transcendental nature of the forms, names and activities of the Lord, who is playing like an actor in a drama. Nor can they express such things, neither in their speculations nor in their words.
- Since He had assumed the form of a boar, He began to search out the earth by smelling, just like a hog. The Lord can perfectly play the part of any living entity.
- As confirmed in the prayers of Kunti (SB 1.8.19), nato natya-dharo yatha. The Lord was to play the part of a demon-killer, and a friend, son and brother to His devotees, and thus these devotees were all summoned.
The Supreme Controller's Pastimes
Even the grand universal affairs are merely a sport for the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the creation and annihilation of universes, as well as the vanquishing of powerful demons, are not burdensome tasks for the Lord; they are executed in the sporting spirit of a playful child.
- Kindly describe how the Supreme Lord, who is all-powerful, engages His different energies and different expansions in maintaining and again winding up the phenomenal world in the sporting spirit of a player.
- These were Brahma's questions: (1) What are the forms of the Lord both in matter and in transcendence? (2) How are the different energies of the Lord working? (3) How does the Lord play with His different energies.
- The Lord could have killed the demon at once, but He played with him in the same way as a child plays with a snake before killing it.
- It was He (Krsna) who played the trick of taking away the brahmana's baby as well as the arrows, including the one given by Lord Siva, of which Arjuna was so proud.
Playing the Transcendental Flute
Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the original, supreme form of God is Śyāmasundara, who is eternally engaged in playing His transcendental flute. The melodious vibration of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's flute captivates the hearts of all living entities, and constantly meditating on this beautiful playing is the ultimate perfection of yoga.
- God has got many forms, but the original form is that playing on flute, curved in three places with barhavatamsam asitambuda-sundarangam, with a feather on the head. These are Vedic description of Krsna.
- Krsna freely moves amongst His friends as a cowherd boy in Vrndavana, and when He plays His flute, all living creatures, mobile and immobile, become overwhelmed with ecstasy. They quiver, and tears flow from their eyes.
- Another gopi said, "He is the only friend of the suffering living entities. When He plays His flute, all the cows and other animals of Vrndavana, although engaged in eating, simply take a morsel of food in their mouths and stop chewing."
- Persons who are constantly engaged in the transcendental meditation of seeing Krsna, internally and externally, by thinking of Him playing the flute, entering Vrndavana forest and tending the cows with the boys have really attained the perfection of samadhi.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not devoid of activity or personality; rather, He is the supreme enjoyer who is constantly engaged in transcendental playing. By descending to the material world and acting as a loving son, a formidable warrior, or a playful cowherd boy, the Lord makes Himself accessible to the conditioned souls. While atheists and impersonalists remain bewildered by these human-like activities, the pure devotees find their ultimate shelter and eternal bliss in meditating on the Lord's divine play. Recognizing that even cosmic creation is merely the Lord's sporting endeavor, the sincere practitioner understands that the highest perfection of life is to simply join the Lord in His eternal, blissful līlā in the spiritual world.
