The Eternal Reality of God's Place
Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not reside in the material world as an ordinary conditioned soul does, but maintains His own eternal, fully spiritual abode. Although we have fallen into the material universes, the Lord mercifully establishes sacred places and temples to give us the opportunity to associate with Him and ultimately return to His supreme kingdom.
The Eternal Kingdom of God
The material world is a place of temporary existence, but the Supreme Lord has a permanent, spiritual residence. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that God's actual place is the kingdom of God, known as Vaikuṇṭha or Goloka Vṛndāvana, which is the ultimate destination for all pure devotees.
- God created this world. But God does not come here; He has got His own place - kingdom of God.
- In this verse (SB 4.31.16) the word padam indicates the place where the Supreme Personality of Godhead resides. As confirmed in Isopanisad 1, isavasyam idam sarvam.
- There are other doorkeepers also (in Vaikuntha), named Kumuda, Kumudaksa, Pundarika, Vamana, Sankukarna, Sarvanetra, Sumukha, etc. The Lord's palace is well decorated and protected by the above-mentioned doorkeepers.
The Sacred Places of His Pastimes
When the Lord descends to the material world, the locations where He exhibits His activities become supremely holy. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that places like Mathurā, Vṛndāvana, and Badarikāśrama are eternally sanctified by the Lord's presence and are worshipable for all devotees.
- He engaged his eyes in seeing the Deity of Krsna, Krsna's temples and Krsna's places like Mathura and Vrndavana, he engaged his sense of touch in touching the bodies of the Lord's devotees.
- If a devotee can sanctify the place and family of his birth so extraordinarily, then what to speak of how completely the Lord can sanctify the place and family in which He chooses to take His birth.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead has appeared in the form of Nara-Narayana in the land of Bharata-varsa, at the place known as Badarikasrama, to favor His devotees by teaching them religion, knowledge, renunciation, spiritual power, sense control and freedom from false ego.
Sanctifying the Material World
The Supreme Lord makes Himself accessible through His Deity form and His pure devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that any place where the Deity is properly worshiped, or where a pure devotee resides, is immediately transformed into a fully spiritual environment.
- In these verses (SB 7.14.30-33) and in verse twenty-nine, stress is given to one point: harer arcasritas ca ye or harer arca. In other words, any place where the Deity of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is worshiped by devotees is most significant.
- The dress for the Deity should be first class, the food offered to Him must be first class, and the place where He is situated in the temple must be first class or even more than first class. Furthermore, the temple should always be as clean as glass.
- The Caitanya-bhagavata states that Paramesvara dasa, known sometimes as Paramesvari dasa, was the life and soul of Sri Nityananda Prabhu. The body of Paramesvara dasa was the place of Lord Nityananda's pastimes.
Returning to the Supreme Abode
The living entities originally belong to the spiritual realm but have fallen due to a desire for independence. Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly emphasizes that the sole purpose of human life is to rectify this mistake, perfect one's devotional service, and return to God's place.
- We are sons of God, part and parcels of God, and God means almighty. So we have got almighty father, and leaving His place, I have come to this material world to enjoy independently. That is criminality. And we are suffering.
- From there (the upper planetary system, where pious people reside), if his (a pure devotee's) devotional service is complete, such a devotee is transferred to the place where the Lord's pastimes are going on.
- People may say, "What is the use of understanding God? What is the use? Let Him stay in His place, let me stay in my place." But in the sastras, the scriptures, it is stated that pious activities will raise us to beauty, knowledge and good birth.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully illustrates that the concept of "God's place" is not merely a geographic location, but an eternal, supreme state of spiritual existence. While the Supreme Lord perpetually enjoys His pastimes in the absolute realm of Goloka Vṛndāvana, His supreme mercy allows Him to manifest His divine presence anywhere His pure devotees gather to worship Him. Whether it is the holy land of Vṛndāvana, the sacred space of a clean temple, or the very heart of a surrendered soul, God's place is defined by the presence of unalloyed devotional service. By abandoning our criminal desire to enjoy independently in the material world and engaging fully in the worship of the Lord, we can purify our consciousness and become eligible to return to our original, eternal home in the kingdom of God.
