Devotees Reject Whatever Goes Against Devotional Service to God
Devotional service is the soul's natural function, and anything that opposes it must be understood carefully. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that opposition to bhakti may come through false philosophy, misleading teachers, careless institutional decisions, or a demonic spirit against service to the Lord. A sincere devotee does not treat such opposition lightly, because it can divert the heart from Kṛṣṇa. Therefore devotional life requires discrimination: accept what nourishes service and reject what weakens it.
Opposition to Devotional Service Keeps the Soul Bound
To be against devotional service is to resist the soul's eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord. Such resistance does not lead to freedom, knowledge, or spiritual elevation; it keeps the living being rotating in material existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that opposition to service is connected with a degraded mentality because it denies the purpose of human life. The devotee therefore sees anti-devotional attitudes not as harmless differences, but as forces that keep the soul away from Kṛṣṇa.
- All these people who are against the principle of devotional service are destined to rotate in this material world without fail.
- Anyone who is against the transcendental loving service of the Lord is more or less a beastly creature, as confirmed in this verse (SB 3.4.34) of Srimad-Bhagavatam.
- The word asura refers to one who is against devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu.
- Why then does the world become overloaded? It becomes overloaded due to the presence of demons, those who are against devotional service.
False Gurus and Impersonalism Must Be Rejected
A teacher who leads one away from viṣṇu-bhakti cannot be accepted as genuine spiritual authority. Devotional life depends on guidance that brings the disciple closer to Kṛṣṇa, not toward impersonal ambition or opposition to service. Impersonalism is especially dangerous because it may appear spiritual while denying the eternal individuality of the Lord and the devotee. The devotee must therefore reject false guidance and accept only bona fide instruction that supports devotional service.
- If one has falsely accepted such a guru (who goes against the principle of visnu-bhakti), one should reject him. Such a guru is described in Mahabharata Udyoga 179.25.
- Srila Jiva Gosvami has advised that such a useless guru (one who goes against the principle of visnu-bhakti), a family priest acting as guru, should be given up, and that the proper, bona-fide guru should be accepted.
- Impersonalists can only mislead their disciples, for their ultimate aim is to become one with the Lord. This is against the principles of the devotional cult.
- Those who are completely against the service of the Lord (Krsna) are considered to be in abject darkness and those who ask for the Lord's favor only at the time of necessity are partial recipients of the mercy of the Lord.
The Bhakti Mission Must Not Be Undermined
The devotional mission requires careful protection in practice, not only correct philosophy in theory. Temples, literature, and public presentations should strengthen faith in Kṛṣṇa and His service. If a temple is opened, closing it carelessly becomes contrary to the bhakti mission, because the temple exists for the Lord's worship and the public's spiritual benefit. Similarly, literature or drama that contradicts devotional principles should not be presented as spiritual nourishment.
- Closing a temple we cannot do. It becomes a farce and is against the bhakti cult. Our principle must be to carefully consider before opening any temple, and once opened it cannot be closed.
- Once a friend of Bhagavan Acarya's from Bengal wanted to recite a drama that he had written that was against the principles of devotional service, and although Bhagavan Acarya wanted to recite this drama before Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- Svarupa Damodara, the Lord’s (Caitanya's) secretary, did not allow him (Bhagavan Acarya) to do so - he wanted to recite a drama before Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu which was against the principles of devotional service written by his friend of Bengal.
- The pure devotee does not endeavor for anything which is against the principles of devotional service.
True Bhakti Remains Steady Against Opposition
Devotional service is powerful like an ocean that cannot be disturbed by hostile theories. Philosophical speculation, demonic opposition, and clever arguments may appear threatening, but they cannot harm one who remains fixed in Kṛṣṇa's service. What matters is that the devotee does not willfully act against the bhakti process. By remaining faithful to the principles of devotion, the devotee stays protected and steady.
- Volcanic eruptions can do very little harm, and similarly, those who are against devotional service to the Lord, who put forward many philosophical theses about the ultimate transcendental realization cannot disturb this great ocean of devotional service.
- Willfully, we shall not do anything which against the bhakti process.
Conclusion
Devotees reject whatever goes against devotional service because the soul's perfection depends on serving Kṛṣṇa. False gurus, impersonalist conclusions, anti-devotional presentations, and careless conduct can all divert the heart from bhakti. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that discrimination is part of devotion: one must know what nourishes service and what obstructs it. By refusing to act against the bhakti process, the devotee protects the path back to the Supreme Lord.
