The Eternal Reality of God's Original Quadruple Form
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead expands Himself into the catur-vyūha, or original quadruple forms, without ever losing His supreme position. By studying his instructions, we can understand the absolute identity of these forms, their eternal existence in the spiritual sky, how they are worshiped, and why impersonalist philosophers fail to comprehend them.
The Absolute Identity of the Expansions
The expansions of the Supreme Lord are not like the fragmented living entities. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha are plenary expansions of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, possessing the exact same six opulences and acting as the direct enjoyers of the internal potency.
- We must accept the verdict of Srimad-Bhagavatam, which says, The absolute Personality of Godhead, who is known as Vasudeva and who is very affectionate toward His surrendered devotees, expands Himself in quadruple forms who are subordinate to Him and identical with Him.
- These members (Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha) of the quadruple manifestation are never to be considered ordinary living beings. Each of Them is a plenary expansion of the Absolute Godhead.
- The quadruple forms, who are full in the six opulences of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are the enjoyers of the internal potency.
- Vasudeva and the three others are direct prabhava pastime forms of Lord Krsna. Of these quadruple forms, the pastime expansions are twenty in number.
The Eternal Spiritual Existence
The original quadruple forms do not belong to the material creation; they are fully transcendental. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that these forms expand into the Vaikuṇṭha planets and can only be realized by a soul situated in śuddha-sattva, or unalloyed spiritual goodness.
- The original quadruple forms - Krsna, Baladeva, Pradyumna and Aniruddha - expand into another quadruple, which is present in the Vaikuntha planets of the spiritual sky.
- The quadruple forms in the spiritual sky are the second manifestation of the original quadruple in Dvaraka.
- The quadruple forms have a spiritual existence that can be realized in vasudeva-sattva (suddha-sattva), or unqualified goodness, which accompanies complete absorption in the understanding of Vasudeva.
- Sri Sankarsana, who is an incarnation of Visnu in the spiritual sky known as the greater Vaikuntha, is the chief of the quadruple incarnations and is the original incarnation of a devotee.
Worshiping the Catur-vyūha
Worshiping the Lord's expansions is the authorized path to approaching the Supreme Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the Vedic literatures, specifically the āgamas, recommend the worship of the quadruple forms as being equally potent as the direct worship of Vāsudeva.
- In all Vaisnava literature it is said that worshiping these quadruple forms (Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha) is as good as worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead Vasudeva, who in His different expansions, complete in six opulences.
- The Pauskara-samhita states, The scriptures that recommend that brahmanas worship the quadruple forms of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are called agamas - authorized Vedic literatures.
- Worshiping the expansions for pastimes, such as Nrsimha, Rama, Sesa and Kurma, promotes one to the worship of the Sankarsana quadruple. From that position one is raised to the platform of worshiping Vasudeva, the Supreme Brahman.
Refuting the Impersonalist Misconceptions
Because the absolute nature of the Lord is inconceivable to the mundane mind, impersonalists often misinterpret the scriptures. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly condemns the efforts of Śaṅkarācārya and the Māyāvādī school, who foolishly attempt to nullify the eternal spiritual reality of the quadruple forms.
- Considering the quadruple forms of the absolute Personality of Godhead, known as Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna & Aniruddha, the impersonalists, headed by Sankaracarya, have interpreted the aphorisms of the Vedanta-sutra in a way suitable for the impersonalist school.
- In his commentary on Vedanta-sutra 2.2.42-45, His Holiness Sripada Sankaracarya has made a futile attempt to nullify the existence of these quadruple forms (of the Lord) in the spiritual world.
- One should not try to compare the expansions of material nature to the catur-vyuha, the quadruple expansions of the Personality of Godhead, but unfortunately the Mayavadi school unreasonably attempts to do this.
- The explanation of the quadruple forms in the Vedic literature cannot be understood by the speculation of a conditioned soul. The quadruple forms should therefore be accepted just as They are described.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda definitively establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, eternally expands into the original quadruple forms—Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha—without diminishing His absolute power. These catur-vyūha expansions are entirely spiritual, possessing the full six opulences of Godhead, and exist eternally in the Vaikuṇṭha planets. While conditioned souls and Māyāvādī philosophers, led by Śaṅkarācārya, attempt to reduce these divine forms to mere material manifestations or impersonal concepts, the pure Vaiṣṇavas rely on the authorized āgamas and Vedānta-sūtra. The devotees understand that worshiping these quadruple forms is non-different from worshiping the Supreme Lord Himself. By strictly avoiding mundane mental speculation and accepting the catur-vyūha exactly as They are described in the scriptures, a sincere soul is elevated to the platform of śuddha-sattva and attains the supreme destination.
