Worshiping a Spiritual Master as the Representative of Kṛṣṇa
Śrīla Prabhupāda extensively explains the necessity of taking shelter of and worshiping a bona fide spiritual master. By studying his instructions, we learn that offering absolute reverence to the guru is not an artificial imposition, but a strict Vedic injunction essential for receiving transcendental knowledge and making genuine spiritual advancement.
The Representative of Kṛṣṇa
The foundation of spiritual life is built upon the proper understanding of the guru's position. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the spiritual master is the direct and confidential representative of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he is authorized to be worshiped on the exact same level as Lord Kṛṣṇa.
- All the sastras describe the guru as being on an equal basis with Krsna, for he is the representative of Krsna. Therefore he is worshiped as Krsna.
- The Lord says that one must worship the acarya, who is the representative of the Supreme Personality of Godhead (acaryam mam vijaniyat (SB 11.17.27)). One should definitely understand this.
- Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has advised that the spiritual master acting on the Supreme Lord's behalf must be worshiped as being as good as the Supreme Lord.
- It is recommended in authoritative scriptures the spiritual master be worshiped as the S P of God because of being His very confidential servitor, it is accepted by great authorities that the spiritual master is the external manifestation of Krsna.
The Necessity of Worshiping the Ācārya
Material eyes are blind to spiritual realities. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the practice of ācāryopāsanam (worshiping the ācārya) is mandatory because the spiritual master enlightens the disciple with the torch of knowledge, making all spiritual progress possible.
- Sastra says, Vedanta says, sastra-caksusah. Pasyanti jnana-caksusah (BG 15.9) in the Bhagavad-gita. Pasyanti jnana-caksusa: eyes should be enlightened by knowledge. That is real eyes. These blunt eyes is not eyes. Therefore guru is worshiped.
- The spiritual master is worshiped as one who delivers the disciple from the mire of ignorance with the light of the torch of knowledge.
- Yasyaprasadan na gatih kuto 'pi: "Without the grace of the spiritual master one cannot make any advancement." If you displease him, then you are nowhere. Therefore we worship the guru.
- Bhagavad-gita cannot be interpreted by foolish commentators. It must be studied through the parampara system, acarya upasanam. One must worship the acarya and learn from him what is Bhagavad-gita. Acaryavan puruso veda.
The Humble Position of the Bona Fide Guru
While the disciple offers the highest honor to the spiritual master, the spiritual master never falls into the trap of false prestige. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies the critical distinction that a genuine guru is worshiped as God but never foolishly claims to be God, always maintaining his identity as a humble servant.
- Guru should be worshiped as God, but guru will never claim that he is God. That is not guru. Guru will always claim that he is servant of God.
- Guru does not accept, although he is worshiped like Krsna, he never accepts that "I am Krsna." That is our parampara system. Sisya has to accept guru as Krsna, but guru will never accept that he is Krsna. This is our relationship.
- This is a very great opportunity (satisfy guru by service), for the guru is the confidential servant of Krsna. The guru never claims that he is Krsna, although he is worshiped as Krsna: saksad dharitvena samasta-sastrair uktas tatha bhavyata eva sadbhih.
The Principle of Vyāsa-pūjā
Vedic knowledge is received through an unbroken chain of disciplic succession originating from Śrīla Vyāsadeva. Śrīla Prabhupāda outlines that because the bona fide spiritual master presents Vyāsadeva's teachings without adulteration, his appearance day is honored as Vyāsa-pūjā.
- Since Vyasadeva is the original guru (spiritual master) of all who follow the Vedic principles, worship of the spiritual master is called Vyasa-puja.
- According to our system, when you observe the birthday anniversary of spiritual master it is called Vyasa-puja. Actually the worship is going to Vyasadeva, and his representative is accepting the puja.
- Anyone who does this work in disciplic succession from Srila Vyasadeva is considered as representative of Vyasadeva and as such the bona fide Spiritual Master's Appearance Day is worshiped as Vyasa Puja.
- Vyasadeva is not Mayavadi. He is Vaisnava. We belong to Vyasadeva's sampradaya, Brahma-sampradaya. Therefore we worship our spiritual master as Vyasadeva's representative, vyasa-puja.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the worship of the spiritual master is not an exaggeration but a fundamental law of spiritual science. Because the guru transparently delivers the message of Kṛṣṇa and rescues the conditioned soul from the darkness of ignorance, he is honored with the exact same reverence as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This principle of ācāryopāsanam is the key to unlocking the true meaning of the Vedic scriptures. Furthermore, the true beauty of this relationship is found in the humility of the bona fide spiritual master, who, despite receiving divine worship, perfectly maintains his identity as an eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa and Śrīla Vyāsadeva. By sincerely worshiping and satisfying such a spiritual master, a disciple receives the necessary grace to successfully traverse the path back home, back to Godhead.
