The All Pervading Presence of Lord Viṣṇu
The absolute nature of the Supreme Lord means that He is never restricted by the limitations of time or space. As beautifully explained by Śrīla Prabhupāda, Lord Viṣṇu maintains His eternal form in the spiritual world while simultaneously expanding His presence throughout the material universes. By residing within every atom and the heart of every living entity, His divine presence actively animates and sustains the entire cosmic manifestation.
The Source of All Cosmic Activity
The material creation is fundamentally inert and requires a supreme spiritual force to function properly. Through his extensive purports, Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that the universe operates in perfect order strictly due to the presence of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Without the Lord's active involvement and sustained expansion within the cosmos, no material action or reaction could possibly take place.
- Due to His presence (Lord Visnu), everything is working, and there are actions and reactions.
- Everything in existence works in proper order because of Lord Visnu. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham. Even paramanu, the small atoms, work because of Lord Visnu's presence within them.
- Just as our spirit is present within the body, the Lord is present within the universe as Paramatma. Due to the presence of Ksirodakasayi Visnu, the material creation exists, just as due to our presence our bodies are existing.
- This universe is existing due to the Garbhodakasayi Visnu. There is not only one universe, but there are many millions, and they are all working very nicely because the Garbhodakasayi Visnu is present.
The All-Pervading Supersoul
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is intimately connected with all living beings as the localized Paramātmā. We learn that Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu expands His presence into the heart of every living entity, serving as the ultimate witness and benevolent guide. Furthermore, this all-pervading feature extends down to the most microscopic level, residing even within the individual atoms of the material elements.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Visnu, is present in everyone's heart as the Supersoul, and He is the proprietor of all planets and the enjoyer of the results of all sacrifices. He was personally present at the sacrifices made by King Prthu.
- The form of Garbhodakasayi Visnu is called Narayana because He rests Himself on that water. In addition, He is the resting place of all living creatures. Besides that, Narayana is also present in everyone's heart, as confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita.
- The third, Ksirodakasayi Visnu, is diffused as the all-pervading Supersoul in all the universes and is known as Paramatma. He is present even within the atoms.
- He (Garbhodakasayi Visnu) is present not only within the universe but within the bodies of all living creatures, as well as within the atom.
The Omnipresent Transcendental Form
Despite expanding infinitely throughout the material and spiritual worlds, the Lord never loses His distinct personal identity. It is emphasized in these teachings that Lord Viṣṇu possesses inconceivable potencies that allow Him to be everywhere at once while simultaneously enjoying pastimes in His supreme abode. Like the sun that shines in many places simultaneously, the Lord's presence is universally accessible to His pure devotees.
- By His (Visnu's) all-pervading features He is everywhere present as the Supreme Truth, and in His personal feature He is always present in His transcendental abode of Goloka Vrndavana, where He displays His transcendental pastimes in all variegatedness.
- Visnu is one, and yet He is certainly all-pervading. By His inconceivable potency, in spite of His one form, He is present everywhere. As the sun, He appears in many places at once.
- The Lord is present in three features - as Brahman, Paramatma and Bhagavan. Because He is present everywhere, He is described as sarvam khalv idam brahma. Visnu exists beyond Brahman.
- There is a Vaikunthaloka covered with water in this material world, and on that planet is a place called Vedavati, where Vasudeva is located. Another planet known as Visnuloka is situated above Satyaloka, and there Sankarsana is present.
The Dispeller of the Illusory Energy
The absolute purity of the Supreme Lord means that the material energy cannot stand before Him. We discover that when Lord Viṣṇu makes His presence known, the dark influence of māyā is immediately scattered and neutralized. Consequently, those with a demonic mentality are utterly incapable of tolerating His divine presence, as His radiant truth naturally destroys all material illusions.
- Lord Siva accepts maya, but in the presence of Lord Visnu, maya does not exist. Consequently Lord Siva has to be considered a product of maya.
- The demon cannot stand the presence of Visnu, the Personality of Godhead.
- Only by Your (Lord Visnu's) presence can one understand the transcendental nature of Your Lordship, who are the controller of material nature - SB 10.2.35.
- When His incarnation is present on this planet or in this universe, the Lord kills the demons and protects His devotees simultaneously. Sometimes Visnu appears in His person as Lord Krsna or Lord Rama. All of these appearances are mentioned in the sastras.
Manifesting at Sacrifices for the Devotees
The ultimate perfection of any ritual or sacrificial performance is the direct satisfaction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To fulfill the desires of His sincere followers, Lord Viṣṇu personally appears at great sacrificial arenas. His divine presence not only validates the grand ceremonies but also provides immense spiritual ecstasy to the pure devotees who arrange them, proving that He is the supreme enjoyer.
- Lord Visnu was personally present at the sacrificial arena, but this does not mean that He had any interest in His own personal benefit. Similarly, the arca-vigraha, the Deity in the temple, is present for the same purpose.
- Lord Visnu's appearance at the sacrificial arena of Maharaja Nabhi was just to please the King and his assistants. Otherwise there was no reason for His being present there.
- Seeing the Lord (Visnu) present before them, King Nabhi and his priests and associates felt just like poor people who have suddenly attained great riches. They received the Lord and respectfully bent their heads and offered Him things in worship.
- This is confirmed herein (SB 4.7.36) by the wife of Daksa: "Without Your presence (Lord Visnu), the grandeur of this sacrificial ceremony is useless, just as a body without the head, however decorated it may be, is useless."
Conclusion
By thoroughly analyzing these scriptural truths, Śrīla Prabhupāda ensures that devotees firmly grasp the absolute, all-pervading presence of the Supreme Lord. Whether maintaining the cosmos from within every atom, dispelling the darkness of māyā, or personally blessing His followers at great sacrifices, Lord Viṣṇu is eternally active everywhere. Realizing His constant presence fills the surrendered soul with unwavering faith and profound transcendental peace.
