Lord Viṣṇu Kills the Demons to Protect the Devotees
The transcendental activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are profoundly absolute, a truth that Śrīla Prabhupāda continuously emphasizes throughout his teachings. When the Lord descends into the material world, His apparent acts of violence against envious entities are, in reality, expressions of His causeless mercy. By dispatching these antagonistic forces, he not only protects surrendered devotees but also grants ultimate liberation to the slain demons.
The Incarnation's Dual Mission
The advent of the Supreme Lord into the material universe is never without profound purpose. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, the Lord descends specifically to restore cosmic order by protecting the faithful and eradicating the miscreants. Even when Lord Kṛṣṇa performs His earthly pastimes, it is the Viṣṇu principle within Him that formally executes the destruction of the asuras. This simultaneous act of annihilation and protection serves to reestablish the eternal principles of religion for all humanity.
- The way in which Lord Visnu kills the demons and protects the faithful is mentioned in BG 4.8: "In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium."
- When His incarnation is present on this planet or in this universe, the Lord kills the demons and protects His devotees simultaneously. Sometimes Visnu appears in His person as Lord Krsna or Lord Rama. All of these appearances are mentioned in the sastras.
- During the period of Krsna’s appearance, the killing of asuras or nonbelievers such as Kamsa and Jarasandha was done by Visnu, who was within the person of Krsna. Such apparent killing by Krsna took place as a matter of course and was an incidental activity.
- At that time, therefore, Lord Visnu is present in the body of Lord Krsna, and Lord Krsna kills the demons through Him.
- The killing of the demons in Vrndavana was carried out only by the Visnu portion of Krsna.
The Divine Weapons of Protection and Annihilation
The majestic form of Lord Viṣṇu is eternally equipped with divine symbols that serve His dual mission. As described by Śrīla Prabhupāda, the Lord's hands elegantly hold a lotus flower and a conchshell to bless the devotees, while wielding a club and a cakra to vanquish His enemies. These weapons are inherently transcendental, carrying the absolute power of the Lord even when deployed across the universe. Anyone struck down by these divine instruments is immediately purged of material contamination and granted spiritual elevation.
- In two hands Lord Visnu always carries a club and a cakra to kill demons, and in His other two hands He holds a conchshell and a lotus to give protection to His devotees.
- May Lord Narayana, who is equipped with all potencies, protect me in the third part of the day, and may Lord Visnu, who carries a disc to kill His enemies, protect me in the fourth part of the day.
- Even without taking the shape of an animal, Visnu could kill him by hurling His Sudarsana cakra, which can go anywhere without the Lord's physical presence. Therefore Hiranyakasipu was careful to guard against all kinds of weapons.
- Regardless of what you (the Yamadutas) have done this time, henceforward you should not approach such devotees; otherwise you will be killed by the club of Lord Visnu. This is my (Yamaraja's) warning.
- The demons killed by Lord Visnu's cakra disc and club are elevated to the spiritual world, just like the devotees who are protected by the hands holding the lotus flower and conchshell.
The Vain Enmity of the Demons
Material illusion forces atheistic personalities to view the Supreme Lord as a hostile adversary. We learn from Śrīla Prabhupāda that figures like Hiraṇyakaśipu harbored deep-seated vengeance against Lord Viṣṇu, failing to recognize Him as the Supersoul residing within their own hearts. Despite acquiring immense mystic power and securing cosmic benedictions, these entities live in perpetual terror of the Lord's intervention. Their defiant attempts to combat the absolute truth inevitably culminate in their own destruction.
- Thus the two associates of Lord Visnu who had become Hiranyaksa and Hiranyakasipu, the sons of Diti, were both killed. By illusion they had thought that the Supreme Lord, who is situated in everyone's heart, was their enemy.
- Hiranyakasipu maintained his enmity and his anger against Lord Visnu until the point of death. He never forgot his vengeful attitude toward Visnu for having killed his brother, Hiranyaks.
- Hiranyakasipu murmured to himself, "Lord Visnu, who possesses great mystic power, has made this plan to kill me, but what is the use of such an attempt? Who can fight with me?" Thinking like this and taking up his club, Hiranyakasipu attacked the Lord.
- Hiranyakasipu was very much afraid of Visnu's becoming an animal to kill him because his brother had been killed by Visnu when the Lord took the shape of a boar. He was therefore very careful to guard against all kinds of animals.
- There are three original deities - Brahma, Visnu and Mahesvara. Hiranyakasipu knew that Brahma would not kill him, but he also wanted not to be killed by Lord Visnu or Lord Siva. Consequently, he prayed for such a benediction.
The Fears and Rebirth of Kaṁsa
The history of Kaṁsa perfectly illustrates how the soul carries its karmic enmity across lifetimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that having been slain as the demon Kālanemi by Lord Viṣṇu in a previous birth, Kaṁsa was haunted by the prophecy of his impending doom. This overwhelming paranoia drove him to commit unspeakable atrocities, such as shackling Devakī and murdering her innocent children. He lived in a state of constant anxiety, suspecting the presence of the Supreme Lord in every shadow.
- In his previous birth, Kamsa had been a great demon named Kalanemi and been killed by Visnu. Upon learning this information from Narada, Kamsa became envious of everyone connected with the Yadu dynasty - SB 10.1.68.
- Narada informed him (Kamsa) that any one of the sons of Devaki might be Visnu. Because Visnu was to kill him, Kamsa should not spare any of Devaki's children, Narada Muni advised.
- Fearing his death, Kamsa arrested Vasudeva and Devaki and chained them with iron shackles. Suspecting each of the children to be Visnu, Kamsa killed them one after another because of the prophecy that Visnu would kill him - SB 10.1.65-66.
- Seeing her jubilant, pure and smiling, Kamsa thought - The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu, who is now within her, will kill me. Devaki has never before looked so brilliant and jubilant - SB 10.2.20.
- Suspecting each of the children to be Visnu, Kamsa killed them one after another because of the prophecy that Visnu would kill him.
Absolute Mercy Through Annihilation
To the ordinary observer, the Lord’s decision to annihilate certain individuals might appear partial or unjust. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the absolute nature of Lord Viṣṇu ensures that even His wrath is a manifestation of supreme love. When an offensive entity like Pauṇḍraka is struck down, the very act of being killed by the Lord cleanses him of all sins and awards him spiritual liberation. Thus, the surrendered soul understands that whether the Lord chooses to extend His protective hand or strike with His club, both actions are entirely auspicious.
- Pariksit inquired: My dear brahmana, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu, being everyone's well-wisher, is equal and extremely dear to everyone. How, then, did He become partial like a common man for the sake of Indra and thus kill Indra's enemies?
- Paundraka's meditation was concentrated on the Visnu form, but because he thought himself Visnu, it was offensive. By his being killed by Krsna, that offense was mitigated. Thus he was given sarupya liberation, and he attained the same form as the Lord.
- When Hiranyakasipu teases the great devotee Prahlada, his own son, who is peaceful and sober and who has no enemy, I shall kill Hiranyakasipu immediately, despite the benedictions of Brahma.
- His (Krsna's) business will be to kill all the atheists because ultimately the real protector is Visnu, or Krsna.
- Bhaktivinoda Thakura said: When one surrenders to Lord Visnu, one must be prepared to abide by His orders in all circumstances, whether He kills one or gives one protection. Lord Visnu must be worshiped in all circumstances.
Conclusion
The destruction of the demonic forces is not an act of ordinary hatred, but a divine intervention rooted in absolute compassion. As Śrīla Prabhupāda so wonderfully explains, the supreme will of Lord Viṣṇu orchestrates the downfall of the envious only to reestablish religious principles and shield the innocent. Ultimately, whether He manifests to embrace His devotees or to vanquish rebellious atheists, the Lord's actions are uniformly designed to liberate conditioned souls and draw them back to the spiritual realm.
