Overcoming Material Worry Through Surrender
Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies worry as a fundamental symptom of material existence, rooted in our false identification with the physical body and its attachments. By examining his teachings, we learn that the only effective way to transcend the constant anxieties of life is to shift our dependence from our own independent endeavors to the supreme protection of Kṛṣṇa.
The Inevitability of Material Worry
As long as a living entity identifies with the material world, experiencing anxiety is unavoidable. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that fear is simply a byproduct of worrying about the future, which plagues everyone from ordinary householders to great politicians.
- You must be worried. That is material world. So, so long you are in the material platform, you must be worried. There is no exception.
- Fear is due to worrying about the future.
- At the time of death every living entity worries about what will happen to his wife and children. Similarly, a politician also worries about what will happen to his country or his political party.
Attachment and Family Anxieties
Strong affection for one's family and social position often distracts a person from the true purpose of human life. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that this deep-rooted attachment generates immense worry, causing people to agonize over how their dependents will survive, particularly at the critical moment of death.
- At the end of life one worries about how his wife will be protected and how she will manage the great family responsibilities. In this way a man usually thinks of his wife before death.
- Due to the continuance of his lusty desires, King Puranjana became very poor in everything. Thus he did not understand the aim of life. He was still very affectionate toward his wife and children, and he worried about maintaining them.
- In the beginning of Bhagavad-gita Arjuna was worried about killing Bhisma and Drona, his worshipful grandfathers and masters. But Krsna said that he need not be afraid of killing his grandfather.
Divine Maintenance and Useless Anxiety
Worldly people exhaust themselves worrying about basic necessities and global problems like overpopulation. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the flaw in this mentality by reminding us that the Supreme Lord effortlessly maintains 8,400,000 species of life; therefore, all our independent anxieties about maintenance are practically useless.
- We cannot conceive how many living entities are being maintained by the Supreme Lord. All the great elephants, all the small ants, all the 8,400,000 species of life are maintained by Bhagavan. Why do we worry that He will not maintain us.
- We should not worry about eating and sleeping, for the needs of the body are already arranged. We do not have to work independently to maintain the body.
- Even overpopulation Krsna provides. Why you are worried, "overpopulation"? You chant Hare Krsna. Why you are worried about overpopulation?
Complete Surrender and Divine Protection
The ultimate solution to all material anxiety is full surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures that when a sincere soul takes shelter of Kṛṣṇa and constantly chants His holy names, the Lord personally provides for their necessities and protects them from all sinful reactions.
- The pure devotee does not have to worry about the necessities of life; he need not be anxious because when he removes the darkness from his heart, everything is provided automatically by the Supreme Lord.
- There is no need to be worried, for the Lord (Krsna) Himself assures that He will care for His devotee and save him from the reactions of sinful activities. Material bondage is a result of sinful activity.
- A devotee of the Supreme Lord should not worry whether he will depart either by arrangement or by accident. The devotee should be firmly established in Krsna consciousness and chant Hare Krsna.
- What is the worry? I have already said everyone is going to die. Chant Hare Krsna, always think of Krsna. That's all.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly maps out the progression from material anxiety to spiritual peace. Everyone on the physical platform, regardless of their social standing, is plagued by fears of the future, familial attachments, and survival. However, these worries are fundamentally based in ignorance. Since the Supreme Lord already supplies the needs of millions of lower species, it is illogical for human beings to suffer from anxiety over bodily maintenance. By simply giving up independent, mundane endeavors and completely surrendering to Kṛṣṇa—primarily through the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra—a devotee transcends the fearful nature of this world and rests securely under the Lord’s divine protection.
