Kṛṣṇa Helps From Within and Without
Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly emphasizes that the Supreme Lord is never far from His devotees. He teaches that Kṛṣṇa is universally present, situated directly in the heart of every living entity and pervading the entire cosmos. By studying his profound instructions, we learn how the Lord lovingly guides sincere souls by acting as the Supersoul internally and manifesting externally as the bona fide spiritual master.
The All-Pervading Presence
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is antar-bahiḥ, meaning He exists simultaneously inside everything and outside everything. Although He may appear invisible to the material eyes of the less intelligent, advanced devotees realize His universal presence at all times.
- In the Vedas it is said, antar bahis ca tat sarvam vyaya narayanah sthitah: "Narayana is all-pervading, and He exists both within and without.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is antarbahih, present within and without everything. One must overcome the delusion caused by the Lord's external energy and realize His presence both externally and internally.
- He (Krsna) is both within and without. Although He was present before Srimati Kunti as her nephew, He was also within her and everyone else.
- Brahma said, "You are both within and without. Therefore Your presence is everywhere. Instead of searching for the Supersoul anywhere else, a devotee only concentrates his mind on You within."
The Perfection of Vision
True spiritual elevation is not merely a matter of performing severe penances or philosophical speculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that actual perfection means developing the purified intelligence to perceive Kṛṣṇa continuously, seeing His divine hand both within oneself and in the external world.
- Everyone is trying to become perfect, but the perfection means when one can see Krsna within and without. That is perfection.
- If you can see twenty-four hours Krsna, within and without, then that is the end of all tapasya.
- Those who are less intelligent simply try to find God within, but those who are advanced in intelligence can see the Lord both within and without.
- A little elevated from speculative status, when one is intelligent enough, one tries to find out the supreme cause of all causes - within and without.
The Twofold Guidance
Kṛṣṇa never leaves the conditioned soul without a path to liberation. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the Lord's supreme compassion, explaining that He guides us internally as the Supersoul (Paramātmā) and externally by manifesting as the guru, or bona fide spiritual master.
- Krsna helps as the guru, or spiritual master, from within & without. From without He helps the devotee as His representative, and from within He talks personally with the pure devotee & gives him instructions by which he may return home, back to Godhead.
- He (Krsna) is ready to give us advice from within and from without - from within as Supersoul and from without as the spiritual master. Therefore it is said, guru-krsna-krpaya bhakti-lata-bija (CC Madhya 19.151). Both things are required - guru and Krsna.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is pleased to guide a devotee from within and without. From within He guides him as the Supersoul, and from without He guides him as the spiritual master.
- For one who is very serious about understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Supersoul immediately renders assistance by directing him to a bona fide spiritual master. In this way the spiritual candidate is helped from within and without.
Sincerity Invokes Mercy
The Lord's instructions are constantly being broadcast, but one must possess the proper receptivity to hear them. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the moment a soul becomes genuinely sincere in their desire to return to Godhead, Kṛṣṇa transmits the necessary knowledge and cleanses them of all material contamination.
- As soon as you become sincere, Krsna responds from within. If you want Krsna, or God, sincerely, then the help will come two ways: from without, from within.
- One has to be acquainted with God from both within and without, and one must take dictation from within and without to act in Krsna consciousness. This is the highest perfectional stage of the human form of life.
- Krsna transmits information both from within and from without. We simply have to receive it. If knowledge is received in this way, it doesn’t matter whether it is inconceivable or not.
- The autumn season takes away the rolling of dark clouds in the sky as well as the polluted water. Filthy conditions on the ground also become cleansed. Similarly, a person who takes to Krsna consciousness immediately becomes cleansed of all dirty things within & without.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it abundantly clear that the Supreme Lord is intimately involved in the spiritual journey of every individual. By understanding that Kṛṣṇa is universally present, a practitioner realizes that they are never alone. Through the divine arrangement of the Supersoul acting internally and the spiritual master acting externally, the sincere soul receives flawless guidance. Cultivating this dual awareness and taking dictation from both sources constitutes the ultimate perfection of human life and clears the path back home, back to Godhead.
