The Unlimited Expansions of the Absolute is God's Manifestations
To the limited human mind, the sheer scale and variety of the universe can be overwhelming. From the smallest atom to the grandest galaxies, the diversity of existence raises a profound question: How can one Supreme Being be the source of such infinite variety? The Vedic literatures answer this through the science of divine manifestation. The Absolute Truth, Lord Kṛṣṇa, is one without a second, yet because He is supremely blissful, He expands Himself through His varied energies. Just as a single jewel can reflect thousands of different colors, the one Supreme Lord manifests Himself in countless forms, energies, and incarnations to execute His divine will and enjoy loving pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda provides a comprehensive map of these manifestations, guiding us from the vastness of the cosmic creation down to the intimate, merciful forms the Lord assumes to deliver His devotees. By studying how God manifests Himself, we learn to see His presence everywhere and awaken our dormant love for Him.
The Energies of the Absolute
The fundamental principle of Vedic cosmology is that nothing exists independently of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the entire material and spiritual creation is simply a display of the Lord's various energies. Just as heat and light are manifestations of fire, all living beings and matter are manifestations of the Supreme Lord.
- The fact is that there is nothing but God within and without. Everything is a manifestation of His different energies, like the heat and light emanating from a fire, and in this way there is a oneness among His diverse energies.
- The living entities are the superior energies, whereas matter is the inferior energy, and the combination of these energies brings about the manifestation of this material world, which is in the heart of the Lord.
- The Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead is one without a second, but He manifests Himself by different energies because He is by nature blissful.
- The Supreme Absolute Truth has His inconceivable potency, out of which this cosmos has been manifested. In other words, the Supreme Absolute Truth is the ingredient, and the living entity and cosmic manifestation are the by-products.
The Three Puruṣa-avatāras
When the Lord desires to create the material universe, He does not do so directly in His original form. Instead, He manifests three specific forms known as the puruṣa-avatāras. Śrīla Prabhupāda details how these three forms of Viṣṇu are responsible for manifesting and maintaining the entire cosmic structure.
- A description of the three purusa-avataras is given in Srimad-Bhagavatam. The Supreme Personality of Godhead manifests three features, as Karanodakasayi Visnu, Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu, in this material manifestation.
- Lord Maha-Visnu, who is lying on the Causal Ocean, is a manifestation of Sankarsana. He is the original Personality of Godhead who glances over the material and efficient causes of the cosmic manifestation.
- This Karanodakasayi Visnu causes the manifestation of material creation by looking over His material energy. In the first volume of this book we have already discussed to some extent the explanation of the verse jagrhe paurusam rupam.
- That Ksirodakasayi Visnu is entering in the heart of every living entity. In this way, the Visnu manifestation is all over the creation.
The Divisions of the Cosmos
The material world, with all its galaxies and universes, is inconceivably vast to the human mind, yet it represents only a fraction of God's total creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies the Vedic division of existence: the material manifestation is only one-fourth of the Lord's energy, while the eternal spiritual sky comprises three-fourths.
- Because it consists of three fourths of the Lord's energy, the spiritual world is called tri-pad-bhuta. Being a manifestation of one fourth of the Lord's energy, the material world is called eka-pada.
- In the Padma Purana, Uttara-khanda, it is stated that beyond the one-fourth part of God's creation is the three-fourths manifestation.
- The material world, conducted by the Supreme Lord's external energy, is called Devi-dhama and is a manifestation of one fourth of His energy.
- This part is eternal, everlasting, without deterioration, and unlimited, and it contains the highest perfectional stage of living conditions.
Simultaneous Oneness and Difference
If everything is a manifestation of God's energy, does that mean God has become the universe? Śrīla Prabhupāda refutes this pantheistic idea by explaining the philosophy of acintya-bhedābheda-tattva. The manifestations are identical to the Lord because they are His energy, but the Lord simultaneously retains His distinct, personal identity.
- Vaisnava philosophers do not accept the different manifestations of the energy of the Supreme Lord as false; they accept them as nondifferent from the Supreme Personality of Godhead because they are a display of His diverse energies.
- The Vaisnavas following Caitanya stress the doctrine of acintya-bhedabheda-tattva, which states that the Supreme Lord, being the cause and effect of everything, is inconceivably, simultaneously one with His manifestations of energy and different from them.
- Everything is a manifestation of His potency as part and parcel. The potency and the potent are nondifferent, so the conception of duality is at once mitigated by attainment of perfect knowledge.
- The aphorism svarupa-dvayam iksyate declares that in spite of appearances, there is no chance of duality in the Absolute, for He is but one in diverse manifestations.
Plenary Expansions and Incarnations
The Supreme Lord is not a static entity; He continually expands Himself to perform specific pastimes and protect the universe. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how original Kṛṣṇa manifests into innumerable plenary portions and incarnations, all of which are fully spiritual and completely free from the touch of material nature.
- Lord Sri Krsna is the svayam-rupa Supreme Personality of Godhead, and all other forms of Godhead, extending to the purusa-avataras, guna-avataras, lila-avataras, yuga-avataras and many other thousands of manifestations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are Krsna's plenary portions and integrated parts.
- The Lord descends either as Kapila or Rama, Nrsimha or Varaha, and whatever forms He assumes in the material world are all manifestations of His own personal internal energy. They are never forms of the material energy.
- The Personality of Godhead manifests Himself in six different features: (1) prabhava, (2) vaibhava, (3) empowered incarnations, (4) partial incarnations, (5) childhood and (6) boyhood.
- One should concentrate his mind upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who alone distributes Himself in so many manifestations just as ordinary persons create thousands of manifestations in dreams.
The Controllers of the Material Modes
To regulate the functions of the material world, the Lord manifests specific forms known as the guṇa-avatāras. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the hierarchy of these manifestations—Lord Brahmā, Lord Viṣṇu, and Lord Śiva—who perfectly manage the cosmic cycles of creation, maintenance, and annihilation.
- The Lord manifests Himself in three features - as Brahma, Visnu and Mahesvara - to control these three qualities. He personally takes charge of sattva-guna as Lord Visnu, and He entrusts the charge of rajo-guna and tamo-guna to Lord Brahma and Lord Siva.
- By a combination of potential energies of the Lord there is the manifestation of creation, maintenance and annihilation in due course of time and by different agents like Brahma, Visnu and Mahesvara.
- Among created manifestations, the total material elements are first created by Maha-Visnu and are annihilated by Lord Siva. Brahma is the secondary creator.
- As the maintainer of everything in the cosmic manifestation, Visnu is also the creator and maintainer of Brahma and Lord Siva.
The Mercy Manifestations for the Devotees
While the Lord's cosmic expansions are awe-inspiring, His manifestations directed toward His pure devotees are deeply intimate and sweet. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Lord manifests His compassionate, smiling face, His eternal forms, and even the bona fide spiritual master solely out of mercy to deliver the conditioned souls.
- The Lord bestows innumerable favors upon His devotee, and the greatest manifestation of His grace is His smiling face, which is full of compassion for His pure devotees.
- You are so merciful to Your devotees that You manifest Yourself in the particular eternal form of transcendence in which they always think of You.
- The spiritual master is the mercy manifestation of the Supreme Person.
- The Lord is here stated to be partial to the devotees. This is the manifestation of the Lord's special mercy to the devotees.
Time and the Cosmic Annihilation
Just as the manifestation of the universe has a beginning, it also has an inevitable end. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the process of creation and annihilation is governed by the eternal time factor, which is yet another direct, powerful manifestation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Everyone is afraid of the activities of time, but a devotee who knows that the time factor is another representation or manifestation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead has nothing to fear from the influence of time.
- Time factor is another manifestation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The beginning of creation, that is the beginning of kala. So that beginning is started by the Supreme Personality of Godhead: sa aiksata. These are the Vedic information.
- This manifestation has its own time fixed by the energy of the supreme whole, and when its time is complete, these temporary manifestations will be annihilated by the complete arrangement of the complete.
- At the end there is irreligion, and then Lord Siva and the atheists full of anger, etc. All of them are different representative manifestations of the energy of the supreme power, the Lord.
Conclusion
A comprehensive study of the Vedic literatures expands the consciousness from a narrow, mundane perspective to an appreciation of the infinite scope of the Absolute Truth. As Śrīla Prabhupāda expertly reveals, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, is the primeval cause of all causes. Out of His unlimited bliss, He manifests Himself in endless varieties through His internal, external, and marginal energies. To manage the material creation, He expands as the three puruṣa-avatāras—Mahā-Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu—who pervade everything from the Causal Ocean to the atoms themselves. He perfectly controls the modes of nature through the guṇa-avatāras: Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva. Despite manifesting this massive cosmic structure—which accounts for only one-fourth of His total energy—the Lord never loses His original, personal form in the spiritual sky. According to the philosophy of acintya-bhedābheda-tattva, He is simultaneously one with and different from His manifestations. For the protection of the pious and the annihilation of the miscreants, He descends in various majestic incarnations like Lord Rāma and Lord Nṛsiṁha. For the materialist, He manifests as the all-devouring, fearful time factor. However, for the pure devotees, His most glorious manifestations are His eternal, smiling face, His transcendental pastimes, and the bona fide spiritual master. By understanding the science of God's manifestations, the sincere soul learns to see the Supreme Lord everywhere, freeing themselves from the temporary displays of the material energy and firmly re-establishing their eternal loving relationship with the supreme energetic, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
