Performing Saṅkīrtana-yajña in the Age of Kali
Śrīla Prabhupāda continuously emphasizes that human life is specifically meant for performing sacrifice to satisfy the Supreme Lord. However, in the current Age of Kali, humanity faces a severe scarcity of resources and qualified brāhmaṇa priests, making the elaborate rituals of previous ages impossible. Fortunately, the Vedic scriptures provide a perfect, joyful, and universally accessible solution. By the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the highest form of sacrifice is now available to everyone without cost. By performing the saṅkīrtana-yajña—the congregational chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra—intelligent persons can easily achieve the ultimate goal of life, satisfying Lord Viṣṇu and bringing genuine peace to the world.
The Impossibility of Traditional Rituals
In previous ages, great kings performed massive sacrifices requiring heaps of gold, clarified butter, and flawless pronunciation by expert priests. Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it clear that such endeavors are simply a waste of time and money today.
- As we have repeatedly explained, due to a lack of qualified brahminical priests in Kali-yuga, it is not possible to perform the ritualistic ceremonies recommended in the Vedas. Consequently the sastras instruct us to perform the sankirtana-yajna.
- At the present moment almost all forms of sacrifice are not at all possible; therefore, it is recommended in the sastras that people should perform sankirtana-yajna. Any householder, regardless of his position, can perform this sankirtana-yajna.
- Instead of spending money unnecessarily on performing yajnas impossible to perform in this age of Kali because of the scarcity of yajnika-brahmanas, one who is intelligent performs sankirtana-yajna.
- It is not possible at the present moment to perform repeated yajnas as Maharaja Barhisat performed, but it is within our means to perform sankirtana-yajna, which does not cost anything.
The Sacrifice for Intelligent Persons
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam states that those who have a good brain (sumedhasaḥ) will immediately recognize the value of the saṅkīrtana movement and adopt it as the sole means of deliverance in this age.
- In Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.5.32, there is the following statement regarding Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu: In the Age of Kali, people who are endowed with sufficient intelligence will worship the Lord, who is accompanied by His associates, by performance of the sankirtana-yajna.
- In the Kali-yuga, the real yajna is hari-kirtana. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah. Sumedhasah, those who have got good brain, they perform this yajna, hari-kirtana.
- Under the circumstances, the sastras enjoin, yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah: (SB 11.5.32) in this age, those who are intellectual offer yajna, or perform sacrifices, through the sankirtana movement.
- Of course, sacrifice is meant to please Lord Visnu. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah: (SB 11.5.32) in Kali-yuga, those who are intelligent perform the sankirtana-yajna. One should follow this process conscientiously.
Accessible to Everyone, Everywhere
One of the greatest mercies of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is that He removed all strictures regarding time, place, and qualification for performing this sacrifice. Anyone can chant the holy names.
- In this age of Kali there is great scarcity and ignorance; nonetheless, everyone can perform sankirtana-yajna.
- In this age, other yajnas are not possible to perform, but this (sankirtana) yajna can be performed everywhere and anywhere without difficulty.
- Caitanya preached this method of yajna, & it is understood that the sacrificial method of sankirtana-yajna may be performed anywhere & everywhere in order to drive away the personality of Kali and save society from falling prey to the influence of the age.
- It is very easy, sankirtana-yajna. You sit down familywise, all the family members. If you perform sankirtana, Hare Krsna maha-mantra, with the clapping of hands, that is sankirtana-yajna, very easy to perform. But people will not do that.
The Ultimate Solution for Peace and Salvation
By performing this simple sacrifice, all material debts are cleared, the world's social and political problems are fundamentally adjusted, and the soul is guaranteed a safe return back to the spiritual world.
- In order for people to become happy in all respects, they must be taught to perform the easy process of sankirtana-yajna, in full Krsna consciousness. Otherwise, there can be no peace or happiness in the world.
- If this Krsna consciousness movement is taken seriously all over the world and they perform sankirtana-yajna, everything will be adjusted immediately. Everything. But these rascals will not take it. They will suffer.
- If you perform one yajna, sankirtana-yajna, then you become clear from everyone's debt. Gato mukundam saranam saranyam. Then we are freed from all debts.
- We shall continuously perform the sankirtana-yajna and continuously chant the Hare Krsna mantra. Then at the end of our lives we shall certainly be able to remember Krsna, and our program of life will be successful.
Conclusion
In this dark age of Kali, the Supreme Lord has made spiritual perfection incredibly accessible. By discarding the impossible, expensive rituals of the past and embracing the congregational chanting of the holy names, anyone can perform the highest yajña. It requires no wealth or expert priests—only a sincere heart and the intelligence to accept the instructions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. By adopting the saṅkīrtana-yajña, humanity can clear all its karmic debts, establish true global peace, and successfully return home, back to Godhead.
