Prabhupāda Promises Kṛṣṇa's Help If His Disciples Are Sincere
The process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness operates on a precise, absolute law of reciprocation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explained to his disciples that spiritual advancement is never left to chance; it is entirely dependent on one's personal condition. By repeatedly stating "if you are" or "if we are," he established that if a devotee is serious, sincere, and strictly obedient to the paramparā, then Kṛṣṇa will personally intervene to provide infinite intelligence, complete material maintenance, and absolute protection from the razor-sharp edge of māyā.
Sincerity Guarantees Success
Spiritual success does not require immense academic knowledge or material power; it requires an honest heart. Śrīla Prabhupāda assured his followers that if they simply act with genuine sincerity, Kṛṣṇa—who is seated within everyone's heart—will recognize their desire and personally supply the necessary intelligence to cross over all obstacles.
- By the grace of Krsna, if we are sincere and serious, then Krsna becomes kind upon us and gives direction: buddhi-yogam dadami tam. "I give them buddhi-yogam." Buddhi means intelligence.
- If we are simply a little sincere in the matter of spreading this movement, Lord Krishna has already guaranteed our success.
- If you are actually sincere Krsna will reward all your desires to render Him pure devotional service.
- If you manufacture your own way, then go to hell. Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau, tasyaite kathita hy arthah. Krsna is there; guru is there. Why should you manufacture your own way? If you are sincere, Krsna will dictate from within.
- If Krsna protects, who can kill? And, if Krsna kill, who can protect? So, if we are sincere servants, then Krsna will give us protection.
Total Protection from Illusion
The material energy is relentless and unforgiving. Śrīla Prabhupāda compared spiritual life to walking on the edge of a sharpened razor. If a devotee is even slightly inattentive or loose in their habits, māyā will instantly capture them. However, if they remain fully engaged in executing devotional service, they create an impenetrable shield that the illusory energy cannot pierce.
- Ksurasya dhara. Ksura means sharpened razor. If you are careful, you cleanse very nicely. If you are not careful, immediately blood. Immediately. So the spiritual life is like that. As soon as you become little inattentive, immediately maya captures.
- If we are not fully engaged then the mind is free to do its fickle business of rejection and acceptance for sense gratification. Maya will immediately enter - we do not even have to call her - the moment we are not absorbed in Krsna's devotional service.
- My dear boy, please remember that Maya is very strong. Any one of us can be arrested by her at any moment if we are not strongly attached to Krishna Consciousness.
- Maya is very strong, there is a chance of our falling down at any moment, but if we are able to catch hold of Krishna's lotus feet by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, then Krishna gives us all protection from the onslaught attack by Maya.
- If we are able to keep in the transcendental position by devotional service we remain completely untouched by the contamination of matter.
Following the Disciplic Succession
A true disciple does not try to navigate the spiritual world using their own speculative ideas. The absolute requirement for entering the kingdom of God is humble submission. He taught that if his followers strictly adhere to the regulative principles and execute the exact orders of the ācāryas, their connection to the paramparā is secured, and they become perfect representatives of the Lord.
- If you are in the disciplic succession of the servitude, servant of the servant of the servant, evam parampara-praptam, then you become representative.
- Our this Vedic principle is to follow the acarya. And if we have taken shelter of a bona fide acarya, and if we are sincere to follow the instruction of acarya, then our life is successful. This is the process, acarya upasanam.
- If I am following the prescribed regulative principles of my Spiritual Master, then without doubt I am pleasing him. So in this way, if you think it over, you will understand the answers to all your questions.
- If you are actually serious to understand the transcendental science, spiritual knowledge, you must have guru.
- If we actually serious to get out of these material clutches, then we should hear regularly about Krsna from a pure devotee of Krsna.
Freedom from Anxiety and Material Misery
The true test of spiritual advancement is bliss. The material world is characterized by constant, gnawing anxiety, whereas the spiritual platform is characterized by eternal joy. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed that if a devotee is factually executing bhakti-yoga, they must naturally feel happy and satisfied. If they are feeling frustrated or anxious, it is a clear indicator that their consciousness has slipped back into material illusion.
- Spiritual life means ananda, and material life means anxiety. You can distinguish. If you are always put into anxiety, that is material life. And if you are always jolly, that is spiritual life.
- If you are actually executing devotional service, you must feel happy. If you don't feel happy, then you are not executing. There is some flaw.
- If I am actually rendering devotional service and I'm not getting any happiness, that means there is some maya's play. Otherwise there is no such reasoning. He must feel happy. Then he has to rectify the process of his service.
- If you are sober and actually thoughtful, you will find that "This is not my life. But I am falsely thinking that I am enjoying life." Therefore frustration. Next stage is frustration. Everyone, frustrated because we are in this material world.
- This restlessness or agitation of the mind cannot be rectified by altering the material circumstances. If we are Krishna Conscious, any type of occupation will suit me and we shall always be satisfied.
Depending on Kṛṣṇa for Maintenance
One of the greatest fears for a neophyte devotee is economic insecurity. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda boldly challenged this lack of faith. He explained that Kṛṣṇa is the supreme maintainer of all living entities. If a disciple dedicates their energy entirely to preaching and pleasing the Lord, there is absolutely no possibility that they will ever starve or be left without relief.
- If we are determined to please Krishna with our routine work despite all kinds of economic handicaps, He will provide all relief. Just see.
- If you are engaged in Krsna's service do you think you will starve? Why? You cannot starve. He is well-wisher of all living entities. Why not for you? This confidence must be there.
- If you are really lover of God, worker for God, don't think of your economic condition, it will be supported.
- Whenever you meet you should strictly speak the Truth without any consideration of future material gains. If we are sincere servants of Krishna, our material necessities will never be hampered.
- If we are engaged in real business, then how the economic question will be solved? We have to work. That's all right, you work. But work simple.
The Ultimate Reward at Death
The entire practice of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is a preparation for the final test: the moment of death. The consciousness one holds at that critical second determines their next destination. He warned that if human life is squandered on material affection, millions of years in lower species may follow. But if a devotee practices thinking of Kṛṣṇa now, they are absolutely guaranteed to return to the spiritual world.
- If we are serious of being transferred to the place where Krsna is, then we have to train up the mind so nicely that at the time of death I can remember Krsna.
- If we are practiced to think of Krsna always, naturally, at the time of death, at the time of end of this body, if we are so fortunate to think of Krsna, His form, then we become materially free, no more this material body.
- If you very much affectionate to your dog or something else, you will think at that time. Therefore practice Hare Krsna, so that at the time of death you can think of Krsna and your life is successful.
- We have got now this human form of body, and according to our, I mean to say, affection or infection to different qualities of the nature, we are creating another body. So in this way we are entangled.
- You have got this human form of life to complete Krsna consciousness, but if you are not serious, then again the gap will be millions of years.
Conclusion
The path to spiritual perfection is conditional upon one's own desires and efforts. By constantly reminding his disciples of the phrase "if you are," Śrīla Prabhupāda dismantled the lazy philosophy of cheap salvation. He proved that Kṛṣṇa's mercy is eternally available, but it must be activated. When a disciple is factually serious, sincere, and fully engaged in the service of the paramparā, the Supreme Lord flawlessly reciprocates, dissolving all anxiety and guaranteeing their return back to Godhead.
