How Prabhupāda Instructs His Disciples on Spiritual Advancement
In the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, spiritual advancement is not an abstract concept; it is a tangible, observable transformation of character and consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda taught his disciples that real progress is achieved not through independent mental speculation, but through strict discipline, purity, and enthusiastic service. By providing clear tests to measure their spiritual standing and warning them against the pitfalls of mundane politics and material attachment, he guided his followers safely along the path back to Godhead.
The Foundation of Strict Discipline
The very word "disciple" implies discipline. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasized that one cannot whimsically manufacture their own path to God; they must surrender to the authority of the spiritual master and strictly follow the established rules and regulations. The daily regimen of waking up early, attending maṅgala-ārati, and chanting sixteen rounds of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra forms the absolute foundation of all spiritual development.
- Disciple means discipline. Without discipline there cannot be any spiritual progress. Therefore our system is to follow the authority or our superiors, no that we can independently question, not this is right and this is wrong. That is not the way.
- I am requesting again and again that all of my disciples simply follow all of the rules and regulations very strictly. Rising early, chanting 16 rounds, attending mangala arati and class, etc. are all essential for spiritual development.
- To keep advancing in your spiritual power always be sure to chant at least the prescribed sixteen rounds of beads daily. This is the fundamental program for advancing more and more in Krsna consciousness.
- We can understand how we have to be very cautious in executing our spiritual duties by observing the rules and regulations and regularly chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. If we neglect doing this, we will eventually fall down.
Testing Progress Through Enthusiasm
Because spiritual energy is eternal and full of bliss, service to Kṛṣṇa should never feel exhausting or mundane. Śrīla Prabhupāda gave his disciples a practical barometer to test their own advancement: enthusiasm. If a devotee feels lazy when it is time to rise for the morning program, or if their service begins to feel hackneyed and tiresome, it is a clear symptom that they have slipped from the spiritual platform back into material consciousness.
- The test is within our hand. If during mangala-arati we feel laziness, that means I'm not yet spiritually advanced. And if one feels enthused, "Now it is time for mangala-arati, let me stand up, let me do this," then it is spiritual.
- If our workers are feeling tired, then that means he's working materially. And if he's feeling enthused, more and more, that is his, he's working spiritually.
- If you find it hackneyed, then you must know that you are not yet serving spiritually, you are serving materially.
- One who cannot rise early in the morning, he is not spiritually serious. That is test. Brahma-muhurta, this hour, one hour before sunrise, is very auspicious moment.
Renunciation and Purity
Spiritual advancement is directly proportional to one's detachment from material sense gratification. Śrīla Prabhupāda taught the principle of yukta-vairāgya, instructing his disciples to accept only the bare necessities of life while dedicating maximum time to spiritual cultivation. As a devotee genuinely tastes the higher nectar of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, their desire for lower pleasures—such as excessive eating, sleeping, and sex—naturally vanishes.
- Nobody can realize spiritual enlightenment without following the principles of purity.
- The less a person is concerned with material enjoyment such as eating, sex and sleeping, the more he is spiritually advanced. If the "devotee" himself lives like a hog or dog how can he preach?
- Yukta Vairagya means that we should simply accept the bare necessities of our material part of life, and try to save time for spiritual advancement. This should be the motto of New Vrindaban, if you at all develop it to the perfectional stage.
- As we make progress and get taste of spiritual happiness, so proportionately we give up the taste of this material happiness.
Avoiding Mundane Business and Politics
To protect the spiritual integrity of the movement, Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly warned against turning the society into a mundane institution. He instructed his leaders to avoid power politics, democratic voting on spiritual matters, and massive business enterprises. If a devotee's attention is constantly diverted toward political maneuvering or excessive commercial profit, their spiritual advancement will be entirely choked off.
- Democracy in spiritual affairs is not at all good but breeds power politics. We should be careful about power politics. Our only aim should be that each and every devotee is full dedicated to Krsna, then things will go on nicely.
- As far as possible we shall not deal in business. That will not be very good for our spiritual progress. But if somebody contributes for our good cause, that is different.
- If you divert your attention to a lot of business, then spiritual advancement will be hampered. So I do not think it is wise to get that big store and start a big business with many departments. That will distract.
- You may stop the political program. It will not benefit our real spiritual position.
Spiritual Association and the Paramparā
Spiritual life cannot be properly executed in isolation or without guidance. Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that living in the association of devotees within an ISKCON temple provides far better spiritual results than retreating to a solitary forest. Furthermore, he assured his disciples that physical separation from the spiritual master is irrelevant; as long as they strictly follow his instructions, they remain spiritually connected to the entire paramparā (disciplic succession).
- Always remember that I am always with you. As you are always thinking of me I am always thinking of you also. Although physically we are not together, we are not separated spiritually.
- The instructions given to the disciple by the spiritual master at the time of initiation should be strictly followed. That will make one advance to the spiritual path. If one deliberately defies such instructions, then his advancement is hampered.
- Without being fully spiritualized, you cannot make others spiritualized. Therefore we have to follow the parampara system. The disciplic succession, as we get the knowledge, as we get the power, as we get the instruction, so we have to follow.
- One need not go into the forest in a secluded place to try to make spiritual advancement. Much better idea is that one associate with devotees in the Krishna Consciousness Centres; this will bring better spiritual results than living in the forest.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness to provide a structured, pure environment where the conditioned souls could make rapid spiritual advancement. By strictly adhering to the regulative principles, continually testing their own enthusiasm, accepting only the bare necessities, and remaining aloof from mundane politics, his disciples proved that the highest stages of spiritual realization are practically attainable in the modern age.
