Prabhupāda Instructs His Disciples to Control the Restless Mind
In the material world, the living entity is constantly tormented by the flickering, restless nature of the mind. Śrīla Prabhupāda taught his disciples that the mind is a material element that must never be trusted or left idle to become a workshop for māyā. Through the practical application of bhakti-yoga—specifically the forceful vibration of the holy names and continuous engagement in practical service—a disciple learns to cleanse their consciousness. By fixing the mind at the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord, it transforms from a dangerous enemy into the greatest friend, guaranteeing a safe passage back to Godhead.
The Danger of the Restless Mind
The mind is incredibly fast, capable of traveling thousands of miles in a single second, and is inherently attached to the temporary material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently warned his disciples never to trust their own minds. Because the mind operates strictly on the material platform of speculation, it will often cheat the practitioner, making them falsely believe they have become highly elevated or liberated while they are actually falling down.
- In the beginning there may be some mistake, but we must see that "Whether my mistakes are now correct?" That should be vigilance. Never trust the mind. That is the instruction here. Mind should not be trusted.
- We should not trust the mind, that "Now I have become liberated." Never think so. We should always remember that liberation is not so easy thing, but if we follow the rules and regulation, then there is every possibility of becoming liberated.
- So long we are on the platform of mental speculation, we should understand that we are on the material plane, because mind is material. Mind is not spiritual.
- If you cannot control, it will cheat. Mind is the friend, and mind is the enemy. If you become Krsna conscious fully, then mind is friend.
The Cleansing Process of Chanting
Due to millions of lifetimes of past conditioning, the mind is filled with dirty, materialistic desires, making silent meditation nearly impossible in the modern age. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that the loud chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra acts as a powerful auditory force. Even if the mind tries to wander, the sound vibration forcibly pulls it back, gradually cleansing the heart (ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam).
- Without cleaning the mind, nobody can advance in spiritual understanding. And the chanting of Hare Krishna is the cleansing process of the mind. That is our motto.
- Our mind is so disturbed that concentration of meditation is not possible. But this chanting, as soon as we chant, by force our mind is engaged in chanting and hearing, by force: "Hare Krsna." So even my mind is disturbed, by the vibration I am attracted.
- If you follow the rules and regulation, then there will be no dirt. Hare Krsna. Ceto-darpana-marjanam. Our, this process is simply to make the mind dirtyless.
- Maya may put so many doubts and worthless arguments into our minds, but if we continue the chanting, the curing process will go on, never mind the doubts, and gradually we will get a taste of that sweet nectar of Krishna Nama Sankirtana.
Avoiding an Idle Mind
The illusory energy, māyā, immediately seizes any opportunity presented by inactivity. Śrīla Prabhupāda famously quoted the proverb, "an idle mind is a devil's workshop," instructing his disciples to never leave their minds vacant. By filling every single moment with transcendental activities—whether it be intensely studying the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, painting pictures of the Lord, or making plans to expand the preaching mission—a devotee creates an impenetrable fortress against material thoughts.
- Whatever free time you have engage in reading my books. Otherwise, an idle mind is a devil's workshop.
- Every disciple should always remain busy in some work for Krishna. We shall not allow to remain vacant our mind, and if the mind is always filled up with Krishna Consciousness activities, there is no chance of Maya to sit on the mind.
- Please always talk about Krishna amongst you two sisters, and enjoy life. This is very good opportunity that you are talking and painting about Krishna, so that your mind, hand, and attention are all absorbed in Krishna samadhi.
- This brain taxation, if you engage in Krsna's service - how to spread Krsna consciousness, how to convince people about Krsna, how to take them to the Krsna's desire - in this way, if you go on making plan for spreading Krsna consciousness, then your mind is controlled.
Practical Adjustments for Peace
Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not meant to be a path of torturous, artificial renunciation. If a disciple found themselves constantly agitated by the demands of the senses, Śrīla Prabhupāda was deeply practical. Rather than forcing them to remain in an artificial state of disturbance, he advised them to get married. By accepting the responsibilities of gṛhastha life, the devotee could pacify their mind and continue making steady spiritual progress.
- I can understand the disturbance of your mind, but why you keep yourself in such artificial disturbance? You can become a householder. That is not prohibited.
- Instead of being agitated in mind, it is better to become a married man and in peaceful mind execute Krishna Consciousness. That is my verdict, and ever since I started this movement I have encouraged marriage to so many disciples.
- You are getting a wife who is already trained up in Krishna Consciousness and if you live carefully and faithfully there will be no difficulty. That is the verdict of all Acaryas. I think this will simplify your agitated mind.
- There is no harm in accepting a wife and living without any disturbance of the mind and thus sincerely advancing in Krishna Consciousness.
Fixing the Mind on Kṛṣṇa
The ultimate goal of all spiritual regulations, vows, and services is to train the mind to remain fixed on the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that if a disciple strictly follows the four regulative principles and completes their daily rounds, the mind will gradually become their greatest friend. This rigorous training ensures that at the time of death, the devotee will naturally remember Kṛṣṇa and successfully return to the spiritual world.
- The devotees must bear in mind they are promising to follow four regulative principles and chanting a minimum of 16 rounds of japa daily. Everyone should take very seriously this vow and make steady and sure progress in Krsna consciousness and go back to Godhead in this lifetime.
- I have already instructed you and all my students that the restless fickle mind can only be controlled by putting the mind to the lotus feet of Krsna.
- If we are serious of being transferred to the place where Krsna is, then we have to train up the mind so nicely that at the time of death I can remember Krsna.
- If you simply fix up your mind on the Lotus Feet of Krishna, the rascal mind cannot disturb you anymore.
Conclusion
Conquering the mind is the supreme victory in spiritual life. By teaching his disciples to distrust their mental concoctions and forcibly engage their senses in chanting and active service, Śrīla Prabhupāda provided the perfect formula for achieving inner peace. Whether through strict celibacy or the responsible engagement of married life, a mind that is constantly trained to focus on the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa guarantees a joyous and successful journey back to Godhead.
