God's Food The Transcendental Remnants Are the Supreme Mercy
One of the most persistent misunderstandings about the Absolute Truth is the assumption that God does not interact with the physical world, or that He requires nothing from us. But if God is the source of all personality, He must have His own personal desires, including the desire to eat and enjoy loving exchanges. The Vedic literatures reveal that the Supreme Personality of Godhead actively accepts food offered to Him by His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains the absolute science of preparing, offering, and honoring the Lord's food (prasādam). By understanding the strict standards of a transcendental offering, the intimate pastimes the Lord displays while eating, and the supreme purifying power of His remnants, we can transform the basic daily necessity of eating into a direct, blissful connection with the Supreme Lord.
The Standard of Transcendental Offerings
The Supreme Lord is entirely self-sufficient, yet He accepts food out of love for His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the Lord is the supreme enjoyer, all offerings must be of the highest quality, prepared with great care, and strictly selected from the authorized items of the vegetable and dairy kingdoms.
- She (Mother Laksmiji) cooks nice foods for Him, fans Him while He eats, smoothes sandalwood pulp on His face and sets His bed and sitting places in the right order.
- As far as the eatables are concerned, all items should be first-class preparations. There should be first-class rice, dhal, fruit, sweet rice, vegetables and a variety of foods to be sucked, drunk and chewed.
- One should note that the Supreme Lord accepts only foods from the vegetable kingdom, as well as milk products. "Water" includes milk and its products.
- The injunction to fast on Ekadasi is especially meant for devotees; on Ekadasi there are no restrictions regarding food that may be offered to the Lord. Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took the food of Lord Visnu in His ecstasy as visnu-tattva.
Loving Exchanges Through Food
God is a person, and His interactions with His devotees are incredibly sweet and dynamic. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda displayed deep, personal affection by relishing the meals cooked by Their pure devotees, sometimes even expressing playful anger if They were kept hungry.
- At Brahma-kunda, the Bhattacarya cooked food, and the Lord, after taking His bath at Brahma-kunda, accepted His lunch.
- After eating the food, the Lord (Caitanya) says, 'Today Mother has fed Me up to My neck.'
- Lord Nityananda replied, "Let Me eat all this food here during the day, and I shall eat at your home at night."
- When Sivananda Sena returned and Srila Nityananda Prabhu saw him, the Lord kicked him severely, complaining that He was very hungry, and asked why he had not arranged for His food. Such is the behavior of the Lord with His devotees.
The Glories of the Lord's Remnants
Once the Lord eats the offered food, it transforms completely into spiritual energy. Śrīla Prabhupāda stresses that having faith in these remnants (prasādam) is a symptom of high spiritual advancement, as the remnants of the Lord's food are non-different from His divine grace and purifying presence.
- Persons who are not very highly elevated in pious activities cannot believe in the remnants of food (prasadam) of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, nor in Govinda, the holy name of the Lord, nor in the Vaisnavas.
- One should take the remnants of the Lord's food. One should sit before the Lord and think that he is massaging the Lord's legs. One should decorate the Lord's bed with flowers before the Lord takes His rest.
- Visnu is offered all kinds of sacrificial ingredients, and because devotees always eat prasada, the remnants of His food, the scent of sacrificial ingredients emanates not only from Visnu but also from the devotees who eat the remnants of His food.
- To acknowledge this (Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in his heart), Nrsimhananda Brahmacari used to accept as eatables the food of three Deities, namely Jagannatha, Nrsimhadeva and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is stated in the Caitanya-caritamrta.
Distributing the Supreme Mercy
Because prasādam is saturated with the Lord's mercy, pure devotees are always eager to honor and distribute it. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the associates of Lord Caitanya would carefully save, share, and purchase the remnants of the Lord's food as the ultimate spiritual benediction for themselves and others.
- After eating, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu took rest for a while. Tapana Misra then gave Sanatana Gosvami the remnants of food left by Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- When Raghunatha dasa was there, Advaita Acarya favored him by giving him the food remnants left by the Lord. Raghunatha dasa was thus engaged for five or seven days in rendering service to the Lord's lotus feet.
- Bhagavan Acarya, instead of giving Him (Lord Caitanya) the remnants of Jagannatha's food, prepared dinner at his home.
- They (Satyaraja Khan and Ramananda Vasu) would purchase prasadam from the market where the remnants of Lord Jagannatha's food was sold and then extend invitations to Caitanya, whereas Acaryaratna, Acaryanidhi and others who were brahmanas would cook at home.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures thoroughly demystifies the profound science of offering food to the Absolute Truth. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the original person, and He relishes the loving offerings of His devotees. While He is the supreme proprietor of everything, He accepts only the purest, first-class preparations made from the vegetable kingdom and milk products. When these items are offered with devotion, the Lord genuinely accepts them, and in His pastimes, He frequently displayed the intimate joy of eating. Whether it was Lord Caitanya expressing deep satisfaction that His mother fed Him up to His neck, or Lord Nityānanda playfully chastising a devotee for leaving Him hungry, the Lord's interactions over food are full of transcendental sweetness. Once the Lord accepts the offering, the food ceases to be material; it becomes prasādam, the pure remnants of His divine grace. Believing in the spiritual potency of the Lord's remnants is a hallmark of advanced piety. It is non-different from believing in the holy name itself. Because these remnants hold such immense purifying power, the greatest favor an advanced Vaiṣṇava can bestow is the distribution of the Lord's food. By honoring prasādam and sharing it with others, the conditioned soul is freed from material contamination and seamlessly integrated into the loving family of the Supreme Lord.
