Yamarāja is One of the Twelve Mahājana Authorities
In the governance of the universe, the Supreme Personality of Godhead appoints specific empowered souls to maintain the principles of dharma. Yamarāja, often referred to as Dharmarāja, is one of these twelve primary authorities, or Mahājanas. While he is commonly known as the judge of the dead who punishes sinful souls, his deeper identity is that of a stalwart devotee of the Lord. He possesses confidential knowledge of the Lord's will and ensures that the laws of nature are applied according to one's past activities. By following the instructions of such an authority, the living entity can understand the true nature of religion and avoid the pitfalls of speculative or manufactured spiritual systems.
Yamarāja Among the Twelve Mahājanas
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Yamarāja is part of a transcendental assembly of twelve personalities who are authorized to speak and propagate the principles of religion.
- According to Srimad Bhagavatam, there are twelve authorities, & they are all famous because they were all great devotees of the Lord. These authorities are Brahma, Narada, Lord Siva, Manu, Kapila, Prahlada, Janaka, Bhisma, Sukadeva Gosvami, Bali, Yamaraja & the Kumaras.
- According to the Vedic sastras there are twelve authorities. These are Svayambhu, Narada, Sambhu, Kumara, Kapila, Manu, prahlada, Janaka, Bhisma, Bali, Sukadeva Gosvami and Yamaraja.
- Yamaraja is not ordinary person. He is given in charge; he is also one of the authorities out of twelve authorities. Balih vaiyasakir vayam. He is one of the authorities about religious performances.
- Twelve personalities - Brahma, Narada, Lord Siva, Kumara, Kapila, Manu, Prahlada Maharaja, Janaka Maharaja, Bhisma, Bali, Sukadeva Gosvami and Yamaraja - are agents of the Lord authorized to speak and propagate the principles of religion.
The Authority over Dharma and Judgment
As the judge of the living entities, Yamarāja’s authority is final in deciding the next destination of the soul based on its previous work in the material world.
- According to sastra, karmana daiva-netrena (SB 3.31.1), there is superior examination. Yamaraja is there. Now, this man is now dead, this soul is now changing body. What kind of body he'll get next? That is judged by the superior authority.
- Dharmaraja, or Yamaraja, he is one of the twelve authorized persons for maintaining properly the human civilization. The principle is dharma. Dharma means not a religious sentiment. Dharma means occupational duty.
- If you think that, "This material world is very nice. Let me stay here," Higher authorities in the management of these worldly affairs, Yamaraja, he'll not allow you to stay. You have to change your body.
Rejecting Speculation for God-Given Laws
Yamarāja’s authority establishes that religion is not something that can be manufactured by human minds; it must be received as it is from the Supreme source.
- No one can manufacture a religious principle by imperfect speculation. One must follow in the footsteps of great authorities like Brahma, Siva, Narada, Manu, Kumara, Kapila, Prahlada, Bhisma, Sukadeva Gosvami, Yamaraja, Janaka, etc.
- He (Yamaraja) is the authority, and he says that the religious principles consist of the codes and laws given by God. No one can manufacture religion, and therefore manufactured religious systems are rejected by the followers of the Vedic principles.
- One should follow the mahajana, the authorized person. Yamaraja is one of twelve authorities. Therefore the servants of Yamaraja, the Yamadutas, replied with perfect clarity when they said susruma - we have heard.
Teaching the Path of Devotional Service
Despite his stern duty, Yamarāja instructs his followers that the ultimate religion is devotional service, particularly the chanting of the holy names.
- Rendering devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is first-class religion. Bhakti-yogo bhagavati tan-nama-grahanadibhih. Tan-nama. And how it begins? "Simply by chanting His holy name." These are the authoritative statements of Yamaraja.
- One may be angry with Yamaraja for his thankless task of punishing sinful souls, but Yamaraja is one of the authorized devotees of the Lord, and so are all the other demigods.
- This (verse SB 6.3.20) was explained by Yamaraja to his followers, that there are twelve authorities. So if one has to know the secret of spiritual realization, then one has to follow either of these twelve authorities.

His status as a Mahājana ensures that the principles of dharma he maintains are non-different from the laws of God. By recognizing Yamarāja as an authorized devotee, we understand that even the discipline of material nature is intended to bring the soul back to its original position of service to Kṛṣṇa.
