Lord Śiva is One of the Twelve Mahājana Authorities
Lord Śiva is One of the Twelve Mahājana Authorities
The path of religion is difficult to understand for ordinary conditioned souls, but the śāstra declares that one can find the true path by following the twelve Mahājanas. Lord Śiva, also known as Śambhu, is one of these preeminent authorities in the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Although he is sometimes associated with the destruction of the material world or the propagation of impersonal philosophy under the Lord's direction, his essential identity is that of a stalwart devotee. As the head of the Rudra-sampradāya, Lord Śiva provides an authoritative link to the Supreme Lord, teaching that the ultimate religious principle is the worship of Lord Viṣṇu and His devotees.
Lord Śiva Among the Twelve Mahājanas
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam explicitly lists Lord Śiva as one of the twelve authorities whose understanding of the Absolute Truth is perfect and beyond the reach of mundane speculation.
- According to SB, there are twelve authorities, & they are all famous because they were all great devotees of the Lord. These authorities are Brahma, Narada, Lord Siva, Manu, Kapila, Prahlada, Janaka, Bhisma, Sukadeva Gosvami, Bali, Yamaraja & the Kumaras.
- Lord Siva is one of the twelve great authorities mentioned in Srimad-Bhagavatam (SB 6.3.20). These authorities are Svayambhu, Narada, Sambhu, Kumara, Kapila, Manu, Prahlada, Janaka, Bhisma, Bali, Vaiyasaki, or Sukadeva Gosvami, and Yamaraja.
- We have many times mentioned the names of twelve selected authorities (dvadasa-mahajana), of which Brahma, Narada and Lord Siva head the list as the first, second and third in order of merit of those who know something of the Supreme Lord.
- This is Prahlada Maharaja. He is one of the authorities of Krsna consciousness. There are twelve authorities mentioned in the sastras: svayambhur naradah sambhuh kumarah kapilo manuh prahlado janako bhismo balir vaiyasakir vayam.
The Greatest of the Vaiṣṇavas
Lord Śiva’s authority is unique because he is recognized as the best of all Vaiṣṇavas. His internal realization of the Lord’s transcendental form and feet is the standard for all practitioners.
- We offer all respect to Lord Siva. We consider Siva as the best of the Vaisnavas. Vaisnavanam yatha sambhu. And we have got sampradaya from Siva. He is considered one of the authority of Vaisnavism.
- Lord Siva is also great devotee. Out of twelve great authorities, Lord Siva is one. Lord Siva, Lord Brahma and Narada. Svayambhur naradah sambhuh (SB 6.3.20). Svayambhuh means Lord Brahma.
- Siva has described the God's bodily features authoritatively. Now he wants to see the lotus feet of the Lord. When a devotee wants to see the transcendental form of God, he begins his meditation on the Lord's body by first looking at the feet of the Lord.
The Founder of the Rudra-sampradāya
To receive real transcendental knowledge, one must approach a bona fide sampradāya. Lord Śiva provides one of the four authorized gates through which a seeker can access the Absolute Truth.
- In the present day there are many apasampradayas, or sampradayas which are not bona fide, which have no link to authorities like Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, the Kumaras or Laksmi. People are misguided by such sampradayas.
- We have to approach an authoritative representative of Krsna appearing in one of these sampradayas (one from Brahma, one from Laksmi, one from Lord Siva, and one from the four Kumaras), and then we can receive real knowledge.
- Yamaraja states herein (SB 6.3.20-21) that this religious principle is understandable if one follows the parampara system of Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, the four Kumaras and the other standard authorities.
Authoritative Instructions and Prayers
Lord Śiva’s role as a Mahājana is further evidenced by the significance of his prayers and his guidance to those seeking to become devotees of the Lord.
- The prayers offered by Lord Siva are very authoritative and significant. Simply by offering prayers to the Supreme Lord one can become perfect, even though engaged in his occupational duty.
- If one adheres to the principles and follows in the footsteps of the higher authorities, as advised by Lord Siva, one can easily become a devotee of Lord Vasudeva. This is also confirmed by Prahlada Maharaja.
- There are twelve authorities. Lord Siva is one of the authorities. Svayambhur naradah sambhuh. (SB 6.3.20). Sambhu is authority. He says - Krsna worship, Visnu worship is good, but still better worship is to worship the krsna-bhaktas.
Conclusion
Lord Śiva stands as a towering authority whose auspicious guidance is essential for the entire universe. As a Mahājana, his role is to redirect the attention of the living entity away from mental speculation and toward the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa. His status as the greatest Vaiṣṇava ensures that his instructions are always in perfect harmony with the will of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. By honoring Lord Śiva as a primary authority and following the Rudra-sampradāya, the seeker is granted the vision to see the Lord’s transcendental form and the strength to become a pure devotee of Vasudeva.
