God Knows Everything - The Omniscient Supreme Lord
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not an abstract, unconscious force, but rather the supreme conscious being who knows everything. While our mundane knowledge is severely restricted by our imperfect senses and limited to a tiny fraction of our present lifetime, the Lord’s consciousness pervades the entire cosmic manifestation. He is the ultimate witness, the infallible director, and the omniscient Absolute Truth.
The All-Cognizant Paramātmā
The Lord does not need to gather information from external sources because He is intimately situated within the core of every living entity's heart. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that as the Paramātmā, the Supreme Lord is directly conscious of all our desires and actions, perfectly knowing our past, present, and future.
- Because the Lord is situated in everyone's heart, He knows everything. Therefore, knowing that we still want something material, He will give us another material body - Yes, take it.
- He knows everything. In the Bhagavad-gita also He says that, "I know past, present, future everywhere." So consciousness is there. One is the supreme consciousness, and the other is this limited consciousness.
- God knows everything, but we do not know what is God. That is our position. Our position is not knowing. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati (Bhagavad-gita 18.61). Isvara, God, Krsna, is situated in everyone's heart.
- The Supreme Lord is present as the localized Paramatma in the heart of every living being, as it is said in the Bhagavad-gita (13.23), and therefore he knows everything of our activities in every stage of our lives.
The Infallible Witness of Karma
When a living entity dies and takes a new body, they completely forget their previous life. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the Supreme Lord never forgets. As the constant companion of the soul, He remembers everything and accurately awards the results of all fruitive activities.
- He knows. I may forget my past activities due to the change of body, but because the Supreme Lord as Paramatma is sitting within me, He knows everything; therefore the result of my past karma, or past activities, is awarded to me.
- We may forget the misdeed for which we may suffer at this present moment, but we must remember that Paramatma is our constant companion, and therefore He knows everything, past, present and future.
- Whatever happens to the body quickly becomes known to the embodied. Similarly, the creation is the body of the absolute whole. Therefore, the Absolute knows everything directly and indirectly that happens in the creation.
- The Lord is the origin of all emanations, and He directly and indirectly knows everything about all the activities within His creation.
The Supreme Director and Protector
Because the Supreme Lord knows exactly what is in the heart of His devotees, He can provide perfectly tailored protection and guidance. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord anticipates the needs of His surrendered servants and expertly directs them from within.
- Since the Supreme Personality of Godhead knows everything, He knows how things are to be adjusted, and He does the needful to relieve the suffering of His devotee.
- As indicated by the words prag distam, the Lord knew everything. Before anything happened, He had already arranged for His cakra to protect Maharaja Ambarisa. This protection is offered to a devotee even from the very beginning of his devotional service.
- He is the witness of everyone's body, nothing is unknown to Him. He knows what we need. Our duty, therefore, is to execute devotional service sincerely, under the direction of the spiritual master.
- Since You are the supreme spiritual master and You know everything, we have sought shelter of Your lotus feet for instruction. Please give us relief by counteracting our present distress.
Overcoming Mundane Misconceptions
Some mundane philosophers argue that if God knows everything in advance, human beings have no free will and are merely puppets. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly refutes this, clarifying that the Lord's supreme knowledge does not negate the minute independence of the living entities.
- Concerning your debate with the professor who claims that if God knows everything then His foreknowing makes men very much like puppets or machines. Persons who think of God like himself has no knowledge of God.
- In Srimad-Bhagavatam we also find that the Supreme Lord is defined as one who knows everything. This is not the case with even the most elevated living entities, such as Brahma and Siva. Only Visnu or Krsna knows everything.
- Although the Absolute Truth has no material ears, He can hear everything and anything. Having perfect senses, He knows past, future and present. Indeed, He knows everything, but no one can understand Him.
- He also addressed the Supreme Personality of Godhead as ajna. Sridhara Svami says that jna means "knowledge," and there is no knowledge which is unknown to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Indirectly, therefore, the demon said that Visnu knows everything.
Conclusion
A tiny fragment of knowledge can never measure the absolute, infinite reservoir of knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, knows everything—past, present, and future. Because He expands as the Paramātmā within the heart of every single living entity and within every atom, He is the ultimate witness and the perfect judge of all karma. While the conditioned soul is bewildered by the illusory energy and forgets their own history with every change of body, the Lord remains the infallible, omniscient companion. Mundane professors who mistakenly assume that God's foreknowledge turns humans into mechanical puppets simply lack spiritual realization. The Lord knows everything, yet He mercifully allows the living entities their minute free will to either rebel or surrender. True wisdom means accepting that the Supreme Lord knows exactly what we need, abandoning our faulty independent plans, and seeking ultimate shelter under the perfect direction of the omniscient Absolute Truth.
