Ācāryopāsanam – Following in the Footsteps of the Ācāryas
In the pursuit of the Absolute Truth, modern intellectualism often champions independent thought and original philosophy. However, the Vedic paradigm operates on an entirely different standard: absolute knowledge descends, and it can only be received through submissive hearing and strict adherence to the previous authorities. This principle is defined in the Bhagavad-gītā as ācāryopāsanam, the worship of the ācārya (spiritual master). Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that spiritual emancipation is impossible for doubtful persons or mental speculators; success is guaranteed only for those who faithfully follow the footprints of the great ācāryas in the disciplic succession. This article explores the vital necessity of ācāryopāsanam, the danger of inventing new spiritual paths, the practical application of filling one's time with devotional service (sato-vṛtti), and the ultimate transcendental realizations that await the faithful follower.
The Principle of Ācāryopāsanam
To make tangible progress in spiritual life, one must abandon the attempt to figure out God through personal endeavor. The Vedic literature dictates that one must follow the mahājanas—the great, authorized personalities. In India, the entire Vedic society is guided by the philosophy of the principal ācāryas like Rāmānujācārya and Madhvācārya. By honoring this paramparā (disciplic succession) system and following their footprints, the conditioned soul receives the perfect, unerring direction required to return to Godhead.
- In the Bhagavad-gita, you find: acaryopasanam (BG 13.8). We have to follow the footprints, footsteps, of the acaryas, because they can give us right direction.
- Our process is to follow the footsteps of acaryas. Acaryopasanam, in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, for making progress in knowledge, one has to worship acarya, acaryopasanam. So by parampara system we follow.
- In our country (India) there are big, five acaryas who is practically controlling the Hindu society or the Vedic society: Sankaracarya, Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, Nimbarka, Visnu Svami. So we have to follow the footprints, the footsteps of the acaryas.
- We have to follow the footprints of the acaryas. Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah. We cannot understand higher things unless we follow the footprint of great personalities.
Rejecting Mental Speculation
The tendency to invent one's own religious path is a symptom of material contamination. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that historically, deviant sects like the aula and bāula sampradāyas attempted to understand Lord Caitanya's philosophy through their own concocted methods, thereby spoiling the pure spirit of His cult. A pure devotee never relies on mental speculation; rather, they remain safe by strictly adopting the exact conclusions and practices handed down by the previous Vaiṣṇava ācāryas.
- The pure devotee never tries to see the Lord by mental speculation, but by following in the footsteps of the acaryas. There is no difference of conclusions amongst the Vaisnava acaryas regarding the Lord and the devotees.
- Bhakta-sane vasa. Tandera carane. We should live together as devotee and follow the footprints of the acaryas. Don't manufacture concoction. Then it will be spoiled. Simply try to follow. They'll protect. They'll give protection.
- The aula-sampradaya, baula-sampradaya and others invented their own ways of understanding Lord Caitanya's philosophy, without following in the footsteps of the acaryas.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself indicates herein (CC Madhya 1.271) that all such attempts (of inventing own ways of understanding Lord Caitanya’s philosophy, without following in the footsteps of the acaryas) would simply spoil the spirit of His cult.
Sato-Vṛtti: Continuous Devotional Engagement
Following the ācāryas is not merely a theoretical exercise; it requires a practical transformation of one's daily life. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī outlines the principles favorable for devotional service, which include saṅga-tyāga (giving up the association of nondevotees) and sato-vṛtti (following in the footsteps of the previous ācāryas). Sato-vṛtti means to expertly structure one's life so that every moment of the twenty-four-hour day is filled with Kṛṣṇa conscious activities, just as the predecessor ācāryas did.
- The last two items are sańga-tyaga, giving up the association of nondevotees, and sato-vrtti, following in the footsteps of the previous acaryas.
- Thus we hold continuous activities in devotional service twenty-four hours daily. This is called sato vrtti, or following in the footsteps of the previous acaryas who expertly filled every moment of time with Krsna conscious activities.
- There are six principles favorable to the execution of pure devotional service - (5) Abandoning the association of nondevotees, and (6) following in the footsteps of the previous acaryas.
- The conclusion is that we should always keep company with devotees, observe the regulative devotional principles, follow in the footsteps of the acaryas and in full obedience carry out the orders of the spiritual master.
The Guarantee of Transcendental Realization
While the path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness contains the deepest, most esoteric mysteries of the spiritual realm—such as the conjugal love of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa (yugala-pīriti)—these truths remain forever hidden from mundane scholars, artists, and poets. However, they are naturally revealed to the submissive disciple. By simply trusting the process, carrying out the orders of the spiritual master, and following the footprints of the ācāryas, the path becomes joyful, easy, and undeniably successful.
- The conjugal love between Radha and Krsna, which is called yugala-piriti, is not understandable by mundane scholars, artists or poets. It is simply to be understood by devotees who strictly follow in the footsteps of the six Gosvamis.
- Because a pure devotee follows in the footsteps of the acaryas, any action he performs to discharge devotional service should be understood to be on the transcendental platform.
- The path of bhakti is not at all difficult if we follow in the footsteps of previous acaryas and authorities, but those who are too materially contaminated by the modes of material nature cannot follow them.
- It is very difficult to understand the secret of Krsna consciousness, but one who advances by the instruction of the previous acaryas and follows in the footsteps of his predecessors in the line of disciplic succession will have success. Others will not.
Conclusion
The supreme security in spiritual life is found by stepping exactly where the great souls have already walked. Ācāryopāsanam is the antithesis of false ego and mundane pride; it requires the humility to accept that we cannot manufacture our own way to the Absolute Truth. By rejecting mental concoction, filling our days with continuous devotional service (sato-vṛtti), and remaining submissive to the realized ācāryas of the paramparā, the conditioned soul is fully protected. What remains entirely inaccessible to the greatest mundane philosophers is joyfully and naturally revealed to the sincere disciple who simply follows in the footsteps of the previous ācāryas.
