The Peril of Blind Leaders and Blind Followers
Śrīla Prabhupāda exposes the great danger of modern society's reliance on spiritually ignorant leadership. When the masses blindly follow politicians, philosophers, and scientists who possess no knowledge of the soul or the Supreme Lord, the entire civilization is directed toward disaster. True welfare can only be provided by leaders who are themselves fully sighted by the grace of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
The Blind Leading the Blind
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently uses the analogy of the blind leading the blind to describe the current state of human society. Because materialistic leaders lack the vision of Vedic knowledge, they cannot see the actual spiritual reality. Consequently, any direction they provide only leads their followers further into the darkness of material existence.
- If one blind man tries to lead another, what is the result? If both the leaders and followers are blind, they will all fall in a ditch, for they are all bound by their nature.
- The Godless leaders of the society are blind themselves and their followers are also blind. So blind men leading blind men has no meaning.
- Blind men may lead many other blind followers without true knowledge of material conditions, but they are not accepted by devotees like Prahlada Maharaja.
- In the materialistic way of life everyone is blind, and in spite of thousands of big blind leaders, the followers who are also blind cannot get any tangible benefit. So you have done your duty to give him some impression about Krishna Consciousness.
The Illusion of Material Advancement
Leaders who promise happiness through technological, economic, or political advancement are simply deceiving the public. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that because these leaders ignore the spiritual nature of the living entity, their so-called benevolent activities ultimately increase the anxiety and distress of their followers.
- Progress in material advancement is blind, and the leaders of such material advancement are also blind. They are leading their followers in the wrong way.
- A void will be felt with the progress of all benevolent activities. In fact, the followers will be put into more and more distressed conditions by following the path chalked out by this kind of so-called leader.
- The leaders incite them toward false, illusory gain and thus engage them in various acts of sin. In temporarily benefiting themselves, such leaders sacrifice the real interest of their followers and destroy the followers.
- Not knowing adequate measures for relieving such difficulties, suffering persons sometimes pose themselves as leaders of the people, and the unfortunate followers are put into further disadvantages under such so-called leadership.
Gliding Down to Hellish Conditions
Following unauthorized, godless leadership carries severe karmic consequences. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that leaders who encourage sinful activities like meat-eating, intoxication, and illicit sex act like a stone boat; instead of carrying their followers safely across the ocean of nescience, they drag everyone down to hellish conditions of life.
- So-called social, national and government leaders mislead people more and more, under the bodily conception of life, with the result that all the leaders, with their followers, are gliding down to hellish conditions birth after birth.
- Godless leaders will never be able to do any good for the ignorant souls who follow them like a flock of sheep to the slaughterhouse. By such leadership the leader himself is temporarily benefited, but the followers are put into the worst position.
- A stone boat would be unable to float and would sink in the water with its passengers. Similarly, those who mislead people go to hell, and their followers go with them.
- The leaders are rascals and the followers are rascals and they're all going to hell. Nature's law is very strict.
The Necessity of Authorized Leadership
To actually benefit the public, a leader must first be a follower of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that only by centering their activities upon Lord Viṣṇu and practicing the science of karma-yoga can leaders elevate themselves and properly guide their followers toward eternal spiritual happiness.
- If the leaders do not do everything for the satisfaction of the transcendental senses of Godhead, how can they expect to drag themselves or their followers from the mire of sins committed in the course of discharging prescribed duties?
- Civic and other popular leaders should center their activities upon Visnu, and by this act of transcendental work, they will themselves be benefited and shall be able to do good for their respective followers.
- All leaders should ponder how they can discharge their duties by satisfying the transcendental senses of Visnu, for what the leaders do will be imitated by their followers.
- The leaders must know first of all how they can do good for their followers, by understanding the real method of karma-yoga, or work with transcendental results. If the physician is himself a diseased fellow, how can he endeavor to heal others?
Conclusion
In summary, Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it clear that the blind acceptance of materialistic leadership is the root cause of the world's distress. When leaders are ignorant of the soul and the Supreme Lord, their attempts at progress only steer their followers into deeper karmic entanglement and hellish suffering. True peace and prosperity can only be achieved when society is guided by enlightened leaders who base their actions on Vedic wisdom, centering all endeavors on the satisfaction of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and leading the populace back to Godhead.
