Prabhupāda's Visits to Centers and Holy Places
Śrīla Prabhupāda's global tours were the lifeblood of his worldwide movement, ensuring the steady growth of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Driven by immense compassion, he constantly traveled to establish temples, nurture his disciples, and impart the highest spiritual truths, despite the physical challenges of old age.
The Preaching Mission
The core purpose of every journey was to spread spiritual knowledge and provide guidance. By visiting centers all over the world, he ensured that his disciples remained enlivened and that the local public received authentic philosophical teachings.
- For them (my disciples) I visit my centers all over the world. So for that purpose I have come, as well as to let you know more about our philosophy, if you are interested.
- We have four places which I have visited - Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, and Jakarta. The preaching was very satisfactory. Sriman Amogha dasa is trying to learn the local language and print some books in the Dai Nippon branch here.
- I was visiting the Kṛṣṇa consciousness farm in British Columbia, and on the road we were passing large herds of beef cows. We were discussing that the farmer thinks of these cows not as spirit souls but as commodities.
- I am in due receipt of your short note which was hand-delivered to me by Dr. Wolf. I won't have the opportunity to visit Atlanta on this tour, however, I shall be in New York from July 9th - July 20th. You can see me in New York if it is possible for you.
Childhood Pilgrimages
Long before establishing a global institution, his spiritual foundation was nurtured through visits to sacred places in India. Accompanying his parents and community members, he developed an early, deep appreciation for temple worship and holy dhāmas.
- Formerly, in our childhood, we visited this temple with our parents because all the members of the suvarna-vanik community enthusiastically take interest in this temple of Uddharana Datta Thakura.
- In our (Prabhupada) householder life we also (like Bhaktisiddhanta) sometimes visited this temple of Vallabhapura and took prasadam there at noon. The Deities of this temple, Sri Sri Radha-Govinda and the Gauranga vigraha, are extremely beautiful.
- When we returned from America in 1967, the executive committee members of this temple (of Saptagrama) invited us to visit it, and thus we had the opportunity to visit this temple with some American students.
Relentless Travels
His dedication to the mission far outweighed his personal comfort. Even as his physical body aged and travel became an inconvenience, he organized exhaustive itineraries across Europe, America, and beyond to ensure the movement's success.
- I am an old man. My visits should remain independent. As far as possible I am travelling, but nowadays I am feeling a little inconvenience.
- I am presently fixing a traveling schedule for visiting Paris, France in the second week of May. Then I will visit, Geneva, Rome, Stockholm, and three or four cities in Germany, each place for no more than four or five days.
- On the 20th instant I am going to Moscow for five days and then on to Paris to visit their new temple. From there I will go directly to London, by the end of the month.
- I have received an invitation to visit South Africa and visa application forms but it will take some time for any approval to come through. In the meantime, I am going to Zurich for about 10 days and then to London.
Inspecting the Centers
Visiting the physical temples and farm communities allowed him to directly observe the practical development of his society. Whether it was the first successful temple in London or the expansive fields of New Vrindaban, his visits brought vital encouragement for further expansion.
- It was a very nice visit to the Bury Place temple. It is from there that we started our London activities.
- I thank you very much for your sentiments, and I was pleased to visit your house. I liked New Vrindaban very much how everything is going on. Now just develop it to bigger scale.
- I am in receipt of your letter dated December 7, 1973 along with the wonderful photos of Denver Temple. Thank you very much. I am very pleased. Carry on as you are doing. When I return to the U.S. next summer I will certainly consider visiting there.
- I will be seeing you all there in New Vrndavana after I visit the Rathayatra festivals and some other temples here in America.
Conclusion
These instructions reveal that every journey undertaken by a pure devotee is a deliberate act of compassion meant to uplift humanity. Whether visiting local temples in his youth or circumnavigating the globe in his final years, the sole objective remained constant: to firmly establish the mission of Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the hearts of the people and physically manifest spiritual sanctuaries worldwide.
