God Is Independent - The Supreme Svarāṭ
Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is uniquely characterized by His absolute autonomy. According to Vedic literature, God is svarāṭ, meaning He is the only completely independent person, whereas all other living entities and cosmic manifestations are entirely dependent upon Him.
The Definition of Svarāṭ
The very first aphorism of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam defines the Supreme Lord as svarāṭ. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that God is the ultimate origin who has no father, making Him fully self-sufficient and independently capable of performing all activities by His inconceivable potencies.
- Janmady asya yato 'nvayad itaratas carthesv abhijnah sva-rat. The word sva-rat means "independent." We are dependent, whereas the Supreme Lord is completely independent.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam comments on the aphorism janmady asya by saying abhijnah and svarat, i.e., the Supreme Brahman is not inert matter, but He is supreme consciousness and is independent.
- He (God) is complete and independent to do anything and everything by His various potencies, very easily and perfectly.
- When you come to the point that here is the person who has no father - He is independent - that is God.
The Dependent Living Entities
In stark contrast to the Lord, every living entity is strictly dependent. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that those who falsely claim to be God must first prove their absolute independence, which is impossible since even their basic knowledge relies on a flickering material mind.
- God is the original cause of one's birth. Similarly, the Supreme Lord is the cause of one's being killed. No one is independent; everyone is dependent. The true conclusion is that the only independent person is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Out of the five subjects, the Supreme Lord, the living entity, nature, and time and space are eternal, but the living entity, nature and time are under the direction of the Supreme Lord, who is absolute and completely independent of any other control.
- No one can be independent except Narayana; therefore no one's knowledge can be perfect, for everyone's knowledge is dependent on the flickering mind.
- Less intelligent persons claiming to be on an equal level with God must first prove themselves to be absolute and independent, and then they must substantiate their claim to being one with God.
Unaffected by Material Nature
Although the Lord expands His energies to create and maintain the material universe, He remains completely aloof. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that God's transcendental activities are never dictated by the laws of karma or material nature.
- His (God's) birth does not, like that of the living entities, take place under the influence of material nature and the bondage of the reactions of past deeds. His works and activities are independent pastimes and are not subject to the reactions of nature.
- The Lord creates the manifested universes, maintains them and annihilates them without being in the least affected. He is within every living being and is always independent.
- The Absolute is personal, but He is independent. He does not require to personally take a brush and colors to paint the flowers, for His potencies act so wonderfully that it appears as if flowers have come into being without the aid of an artist.
- Unless the Supersoul is present, it is not possible for the hands and legs to be active. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is so great, independent and perfect that even without having any eyes, legs and ears, He is not dependent on others for His activities.
The Supreme Shelter and Controller
Because He relies on no one but Himself, the Lord acts as the ultimate refuge for everyone else. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead perfectly directs all cosmic affairs and reigns as the supreme independent controller over all powerful demigods.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme independent controlling person, and all the demigods, including Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, Indra (the King of heaven), the king of the moon planet and the king of the sun planet, work under His direction.
- Ultimate source of all interdependence is the Supreme Truth or Paramatma, the Supersoul, who is not dependent on anything else. He is svasrayasrayah. He is only dependent on His self, and thus He is the supreme shelter of everything.
- The Supreme Being who sees every one of them as the shelter of the shelter is independent of all, and therefore He is the supreme shelter.
- He (Lord Visnu) is the supreme independent Personality of Godhead. This is admitted even by Sankaracarya: narayanah paro ’vyaktat - Gita-bhasya.
Conclusion
To understand the Absolute Truth requires recognizing the Lord's status as the only independent being. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that because God is fully self-sufficient and transcendentally detached from material creation, the dependent living entities must surrender to His supreme will. By acknowledging that God is independent, the soul gives up its false pride and attains eternal shelter at the lotus feet of the Supreme Controller.
