Nescience - The Darkness of Material Existence
The fundamental problem of human existence is not a lack of technological advancement, but a profound spiritual amnesia. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this forgetfulness of our eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord is called nescience (avidyā), a dark, illusory energy that traps the pure soul in the endless cycle of birth and death.
The Root of Material Bondage
The living entity is originally a spiritual spark full of knowledge, but due to rebellion, it falls under the control of illusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that nescience causes the soul to falsely identify with the material body, prompting a futile struggle to enjoy and control the material world.
- The living entities in the material world are forgetful of their eternal relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This forgetfulness is called avidya, or nescience.
- Although he (the embodied soul) is constitutionally eternal, blissful and cognizant, due to the littleness of his existence he forgets his constitutional position of service to the Lord and is thus entrapped by nescience.
- Our nescient life has begun from this false identification - thinking that I am this matter, although I am seeing every day, at every moment, that I am not this matter.
- In the field of nescience, activities are directed toward lording it over the creation. In the material world everyone is engaged in acquiring material opulence to lord it over the material world.
The Culture of Nescience
Modern society boasts of its vast educational institutions and scientific discoveries, yet it remains spiritually blind. Śrīla Prabhupāda severely critiques this "culture of nescience," explaining that any knowledge focused solely on bodily comfort and sense gratification only deepens material bondage.
- The aim of real education should be self-realization, realization of the spiritual values of the soul. Any education which does not lead to such realization must be considered avidya, or nescience.
- Culture of knowledge means spiritual knowledge. That is real knowledge. And advancement of knowledge for comforts or to protect this material body, that is the culture of nescience.
- Nationalism has developed in different parts of the world due to the cultivation of nescience by the general people. No one considers that this tiny earth is just a lump of matter floating in immeasurable space along with many other lumps.
- In the Bhagavad-gita also the same is affirmed. All "knowledge" not engaged in the service of the Lord is but nescience.
The Torchlight of the Spiritual Master
To escape the pitch-black darkness of material illusion, one requires external illumination. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that it is the eternal duty of the bona fide spiritual master to open the heavily bandaged eyes of the conditioned soul with the brilliant torchlight of transcendental knowledge.
- We offer our most sincere and humble obeisances to our spiritual master, who is all merciful and the savior of the fallen. He dissipates the darkness of nescience by opening our eyes with the probe of knowledge transcendental.
- The spiritual master can drive away all nescience, as the sun drives away darkness.
- It is my duty to open your eyes, because a Spiritual Master is he who can save his disciples from the darkness of nescience, illusion.
- Dear master, kindly enlighten us in transcendental knowledge, which may act as a torchlight by which we may cross the dark nescience of material existence.
The Power of Vedic Literature
The Supreme Lord does not leave the conditioned souls without a map. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that scriptures like the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam were specifically compiled to destroy the nescience of speculative knowledge and deliver humanity from the cycle of repeated birth and death.
- He (God) leaves behind scriptures like Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam, so that the living entities hovering in the darkness of nescience may take advantage of the instructions, the saintly persons and the spiritual masters and thus be freed.
- Just what is the Bhagavad-gita? The purpose of Bhagavad-gita is to deliver mankind from the nescience of material existence.
- For anyone who persistently engages in hearing the topics of the Lord from Srimad Bhagavad-gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam and Caitanya-caritamrta and who is actually addicted to this process, it is very easy to cross the nescience of material existence.
- Brahma continued, "Although You are not understandable by the material senses, simply by hearing about You one can gradually conquer the nescience of misunderstanding."
Godhead is Light
Nescience cannot exist in the presence of the Supreme Lord, just as darkness cannot stand before the sun. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently quoted the motto of his magazine to illustrate that the simple process of chanting the holy name and remaining in Kṛṣṇa consciousness instantly dissipates all material illusion.
- It is stated in CC Madhya 22.31: Godhead is light. Nescience is darkness. Where there is Godhead there is no nescience." This material world is full of darkness and ignorance of spiritual life, but by bhakti-yoga this ignorance is dissipated.
- The Caitanya-caritamrta (CC Madhya 22.31) states: Krsna is bright like the sun. As soon as the sun appears, there is no question of darkness or nescience.
- Sri Krsna is compared to the sun. The darkness of nescience disappears as soon as our relationship with Sri Krsna is established.
- A person who always chants the holy name of the Lord is already beyond the ocean of nescience, and thus even a person born in a low family who engages in chanting the holy name of the Lord is considered to be beyond the study of Vedanta philosophy.
Crossing the Ocean by His Grace
Ultimately, no one can conquer the powerful, deluding material energy by their own strength. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that it is only by completely surrendering to the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead that one receives the causeless mercy required to cross the vast ocean of nescience.
- Unless one is favored by the Supreme Lord, one cannot cross over the ocean of the nescience of repeated birth and death. Here it is stated that yogis or mystics cross beyond nescience by the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The Lord states in the Bhagavad-gita that one who surrenders unto the lotus feet of the Lord can get release from the clutches of nescience.
- The Lord confirms (in the Bhagavad Gita) "Although the stringent laws of material nature are very difficult to overcome, one who surrenders unto the Lord can very easily cross over nescience." There is no influence of material nature in the spiritual world.
- Your lotus feet are the true vessel to take one across the ocean of mundane nescience.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly diagnoses the supreme disease of the conditioned soul as avidyā, or nescience. Forgetting its eternal, joyful relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the pure spirit soul falsely identifies with the temporary material body, leading to an endless, frustrating struggle for sense gratification. The entire material world is submerged in this darkness, and modern institutions—despite their claims of scientific and academic advancement—only perpetuate this "culture of nescience" by ignoring the science of self-realization. However, the Supreme Lord is infinitely merciful. He provides the authorized Vedic scriptures, such as the Bhagavad-gītā, and sends His pure representative, the spiritual master, to act as a brilliant torchlight in the darkness. Just as the rising sun effortlessly dissipates a thick morning fog, the awakening of Kṛṣṇa consciousness instantly destroys all material illusion. "Godhead is light. Nescience is darkness." By submissively hearing the transcendental messages of the scriptures, strictly following the guidance of the guru, and constantly chanting the holy name, the conditioned soul is guaranteed the Lord's supreme mercy, enabling them to easily cross the treacherous ocean of nescience and return to their eternal, constitutional position in the spiritual sky.
