Describing Vaikuṇṭha - The Eternal Spiritual Sky
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the eternal spiritual sky, known as Vaikuṇṭha, is the true home of the living entity. By hearing the descriptions of this transcendental realm from authorized scriptures like the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and Brahma-saṁhitā, one can awaken their desire to return back to Godhead.
The Magnitude and Location of Vaikuntha
The material universes, though appearing vast to the conditioned soul, represent only one-fourth of the Lord's total creation. Far beyond the coverings of the material world lies the tripād-vibhūti, the spiritual sky, which is limitless and contains innumerable eternal planets.
- The kingdom of God, or the atmosphere of the Vaikuntha nature, which is called the tripad-vibhuti, is three times bigger than the material universes and is described here, as also in the Bhagavad-gita, in a nutshell.
- The Vaikuntha planets begin 26,200,000 yojanas (209,600,000 miles) above Satyaloka. Thus the Visnu Purana describes that the covering of the universe is 260,000,000 yojanas (2,080,000,000 miles) away from the sun.
- There are innumerable universes beyond the one in which we are put, and all these material universes cover only an insignificant portion of the spiritual sky, which is described above as sanatana Brahmaloka.
- Sukadeva Gosvami continued: My dear King, 1,300,000 yojanas (10,400,000 miles) above the planets of the seven sages is the place that learned scholars describe as the abode of Lord Visnu.
The Nature of the Spiritual Realm
Unlike the material world, which is subjected to repeated creation and annihilation, the Vaikuṇṭha nature is eternal (sanātana) and situated in pure goodness (viśuddha-sattva). It is a self-illuminating realm that requires no external source of light.
- Here (SB 4.12.36) is a description of two aspects of the Vaikuntha planets. The first is that in the Vaikuntha sky there is no need of the sun and moon. This is confirmed by the Upanisads as well as in Bhagavad-gita 15.6, na tad bhasayate suryo na sasanko na pavakah.
- One variety of the pastimes of the spiritual energy is described as pure goodness (visuddha-sattva). It comprises all the abodes of Vaikuntha.
- That kingdom is described in the Bhagavad-gita as supreme and eternal, never to be annihilated. This material nature is subjected to repeated creation and annihilation. But that part, the spiritual nature, remains as it is, eternally.
- The Lord is eternal, the Lord's servitor is eternal, and the Lord's abode is also eternal. They are all described here as sanatana, or eternal.
The Inhabitants and Splendid Opulence
Śrīla Prabhupāda described many times that the residents of the Vaikuṇṭha planets possess spiritual bodies free from material defects. They are entirely devoted to the Supreme Lord, sharing His opulence and engaging in eternal, joyful service amidst breathtaking transcendental surroundings.
- The inhabitants of the Vaikuntha planets are described as having a glowing sky-bluish complexion. Their eyes resemble lotus flowers, their dress is of yellowish color, and their bodily features very attractive.
- The residents and the form of living in Vaikuntha are described in this verse (SB 3.15.14). The residents are all like the Supreme Personality of Godhead Narayana.
- It is also confirmed here (SB 3.16.32) that the Lord was surrounded by many Vaikuntha airplanes. Vaikunthaloka is described here as having splendid opulence, far surpassing the splendor of this material world.
- In Vaikuntha, whenever there is a flower garland on the chest of the Personality of Godhead or any one of His associates, it is described that the humming bees are there.
Goloka Vrndavana - The Supreme Planet
Situated above all the Vaikuṇṭha planets is Goloka Vṛndāvana, the highest spiritual planet. Here, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, eternally engages in His most intimate pastimes, such as tending the transcendental surabhi cows.
- Brahmaji also described the highest planet of the Vaikunthaloka as Goloka Vrndavana, where the Lord resides as a cowherd boy keeping transcendental surabhi cows and surrounded by hundreds and thousands of goddesses of fortune.
- Surabhi cows are generally found on the Vaikuntha planets. As described in Brahma-samhita, Lord Krsna, on His planet, Goloka Vrndavana, engages in tending the surabhi cows (surabhir abhipalayantam). These cows are the Lord's pet animals.
- In the Gita Lord Krsna gives only a small hint of His personal abode (Goloka Vrndavana) which is the supermost planet in the spiritual kingdom. A vivid description is given in the Brahma-samhita.
- We are trying with difficulty to reach other planets, but it is not difficult to understand the abode of the Supreme Lord. This abode is referred to as Goloka. In the Brahma-samhita it is beautifully described.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda powerfully directs our attention away from the temporary, miserable material world and toward the eternal, blissful sky of Vaikuṇṭha. By providing authorized Vedic descriptions of the spiritual planets—their massive scale, self-luminous nature, and the supreme opulence of their inhabitants—he gives tangible shape to the ultimate goal of life. The highest realization culminates in understanding Goloka Vṛndāvana, the supreme abode of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Rather than wasting time attempting to travel to other material planets or speculating about the absolute truth, human life is meant for hearing these vivid descriptions, developing a deep attachment to the Supreme Lord, and ultimately returning home, back to Godhead.
