Devotional Anxiety - The Ecstasy of Serving Kṛṣṇa
Most spiritual paths define ultimate liberation as the complete cessation of all thoughts, desires, and anxieties. However, the Vaiṣṇava philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness offers a much higher, more dynamic understanding of perfection. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the soul is eternally active and conscious, its emotions cannot be artificially killed; they must be purified. When the burning anxiety of material life is transferred to the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord, it transforms into a deeply blissful, devotional eagerness that defines the very essence of the spiritual world.
The Nature of Spiritual Worry
A common misconception is that a devotee of God sits idly, doing nothing, completely devoid of cares. In reality, a pure devotee is extraordinarily active. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a devotee takes on immense anxieties to construct temples, print books, and worship the Deity flawlessly. The difference is that this anxiety is strictly for Kṛṣṇa's pleasure, which makes it an experience of transcendental joy rather than material exhaustion.
- A devotee may construct a temple for the Lord, and for that he may take all kinds of anxiety, but he does not construct a big house for his personal relations.
- Advanced life in Krsna Consciousness means one should be always very much anxious to calculate whether every moment of his life has not been utilized in devotional service. This is called feeling of being afraid for misusing time.
- That is Krsna anxiety. That is Krsna anxiety. If you become anxious how to worship Deity, how to dress Krsna nicely, how to do, if you remain, that will develop your anxiety for Krsna. Therefore Deity worship essential.
- We are anxious how to protect a property, how to push on this movement, how people will take it, what line of action we shall take; this is also anxiety, but that anxiety is for Krsna.
Eagerness to Hear the Absolute Truth
The first step in awakening our dormant love for God is the process of hearing (śravaṇam). Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that one must not hear the Vedic literature passively or casually. To actually realize the Supreme Lord within the heart, the student must possess a deep, sincere anxiety and eagerness to absorb the transcendental messages of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
- One must be anxious to hear this transcendental message. The desire to sincerely hear is the first qualification.
- If you hear, if you are anxious to hear, then mind has to be engaged. Without attention, you cannot hear.
- Anyone who, because of his background of pious activities in previous lives, is anxious to hear Srimad-Bhagavatam immediately realizes the presence of the Supreme Lord within his heart and fulfills the mission of his life.
- Bhadram te, or "blessings upon you," indicates the sages' anxiety to know the Absolute Truth from the speaker.
Compassion for the Conditioned Souls
While the rest of the world is anxious about economic development and political supremacy, the pure devotee carries a completely different burden. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that a true Vaiṣṇava is constantly in anxiety over the suffering of the ignorant masses. The greatest welfare work is the continuous, anxious endeavor to distribute the science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to save humanity from spiritual degradation.
- We should be always anxious to save the cripple minded people with the science of Krishna Consciousness. This is the position of a Vaisnava.
- The great sages are always anxious to do good to the people in general.
- The Krsna consciousness movement is anxious to serve human society by teaching people to perform devotional service, which can save a human being from being degraded again to animal life.
- This is the main thing - to always be anxious how to spread the glories of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission.
The Ecstasy of Pure Love
The ultimate proof that anxiety is an eternal, spiritual emotion is found in the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully describes how the highest expressions of love of Godhead are fraught with "love anxieties." Whether it is the gopīs staring at Kṛṣṇa in fear of separation, or Mother Yaśodā furiously worrying about her son's safety, this intense, selfless anxiety is the pinnacle of spiritual bliss.
- In the spiritual world there is anxiety, there is crying, and there are other feelings similar to those of the material world.
- Feelings of separation which are present under certain conditions even when the lovers meet are called love anxieties. Such love anxieties are exhibited in Srimad-Bhagavatam (Srimad Bhagavatam 10.90.15) by the princesses who kept awake nights and watched Krsna sleep.
- All the cows, bulls and small calves became overwhelmed with grief, and they began to look at Him with great anxiety. Out of fear they could only cry in agony and stand erect on the bank, unable to help their beloved Krsna.
- When Krsna had been brought to Mathura, mother Yasoda, being very anxious and angry, began to rebuke the King of Mathura.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings invite us to elevate our emotional energy rather than suppress it. We will always be anxious about something, because the soul is eternally active. By consciously redirecting our anxiety away from the temporary maintenance of the material body and toward the eternal service of Kṛṣṇa and His devotees, our lives become instantly sublime, purposeful, and thoroughly spiritualized.
