Antaryāmī - The Supreme Lord Within the Heart
A common philosophical question asked by spiritual seekers is, "If God is in His kingdom, how does He manage the affairs of this world, and how can He hear my prayers?" The Vedic literature answers this by explaining the science of the antaryāmī. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not merely sit on a distant throne; He expands Himself to enter the very fabric of the universe and the core of every living being's heart, acting as our eternal guide and closest friend.
The Three Features of the Absolute
To understand the antaryāmī, one must first understand the complete nature of the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently explains that God is realized in three distinct phases: the impersonal energy (Brahman), the localized Supersoul (Paramātmā), and the Supreme Person (Bhagavān). The antaryāmī refers specifically to this localized, all-pervading Paramātmā feature.
- There are three features of the Absolute Truth. One is impersonal Brahman, the other is localized Paramatma, or antaryami, Supersoul, and the supermost is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavan.
- Somebody is realizing the Absolute Truth as imperson and somebody is realizing the Absolute Truth as all-pervading Paramatma, Antaryami, and some persons are realizing the Absolute Truth as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- For the translation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, you can say either Paramesvara or Bhagavan. Paramatma or Antaryami is good for localized Super-soul. If you can give the meaning of all the sanskrit words, that will be best.
- Govinda is partially exhibited as antaryami, the Supersoul, who enters this material world (andantara-stha) and who is also within the atom.
The All-Pervading Inner Force
Matter has no power to organize itself. The incredibly complex workings of the cosmic manifestation are directed by a supreme consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord, as the antaryāmī, is the active principle within all ingredients of creation. By this one plenary portion, He pervades everything, maintaining order throughout the unlimited universes.
- By His one plenary portion as Paramatma, antaryami, the Lord is all-pervading throughout the unlimited universes. He is the pratyak, or antaryami, of all living entities.
- We understand Krsna by analytical study, how His divine power is working throughout the whole universe, within the atom, within myself, within the movable, immovable, everywhere, antaryami.
- You (Visnu) are the active principle, the real truth, in all the ingredients of creation, and therefore You are known as antaryami, the inner force - Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.26.
- As scholars of the Vedas, they (the Yadus) verified the Vedic hymns: eko devah... sarva-bhutadhivasah... antaryami... and vrsninam para-devata... The Yadus, therefore, accepted Lord Krsna as the Supersoul incarnated in their family, and not more than that.
The Constant Companion
A conditioned soul may feel lonely or abandoned in the material world, but spiritually, this is an illusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that the living entity is never alone. The Supreme Lord accompanies the individual soul within the body as the antaryāmī, acting as the ultimate witness who observes our every desire, action, and conversation.
- We are always accompanied by the Supreme Personality of Godhead as paramatma, antaryami, within the heart. That is the Vedic statement.
- The living entity is within the body, and the Supersoul, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is also there. He is called antaryami and caitya-guru.
- The Lord is present as antaryami in everyone's heart and is visible in the individual soul covered by a body.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna, who is situated as antaryami, the Supersoul, in the core of everyone's heart, heard the boys talking among themselves about the artificial python - Srimad Bhagavatam 10.12.25.
The Inner Spiritual Master
How does one find the path back to Godhead? Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals the supreme kindness of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Not only does He send His bona fide representatives from the outside to preach to us, but as the antaryāmī (the caitya-guru), He guides us from within. When a person sincerely desires to know the truth, the Lord within the heart supplies the necessary intelligence to surrender.
- Krsna is very kind. He is helping you in different ways. He is within your heart. Krsna is within your heart. Antaryami. Caitya-guru. And He is presenting Himself as spiritual master both ways, externally, internally. He is trying to help you.
- Actually, the Lord's birth is never ordinary. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is already situated within the core of everyone's heart as antaryami, the Supersoul. Thus because He was present in full potency in Devaki's heart, He was also able to appear outside her body.
Conclusion
Understanding the antaryāmī feature of the Lord eradicates both loneliness and arrogance. Knowing that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is witnessing our every thought from within the heart, we are encouraged to act with purity and devotion. By eagerly serving the external spiritual master, we please the internal caitya-guru, who then floods our consciousness with divine knowledge and eternal peace.
