Understanding the Unfathomable Depth of God's Knowledge
In the material world, knowledge is always acquired, limited, and subject to revision. We go to schools, conduct experiments, and build telescopes, yet our understanding of the universe remains fundamentally flawed and incomplete. When mundane philosophers attempt to conceive of God, they often project these same limitations onto Him, imagining a deity who must figure things out or a formless energy devoid of cognition. However, the Vedic literatures provide a breathtakingly different description of the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not merely possess knowledge; His very form is the embodiment of infinite, infallible cognizance. By understanding the absolute nature of God's knowledge, how it dynamically expands in competition with His own energies, and how it serves as the original source of all scientific and spiritual truth, we can finally appreciate the true magnitude of the Supreme Lord.
The Absolute Embodiment of Knowledge
To understand God, we must first accept the definition of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is defined by His full possession of six absolute opulences. Among these is supreme, unlimited knowledge, which forms the very essence of His eternal, spiritual body.
- God is complete in six opulences, namely wealth, fame, strength, beauty, knowledge and renunciation. Since He possesses His six opulences, the Personality of Godhead is the ultimate truth in absolute knowledge.
- The Lord is neither impersonal nor impotent. Rather, He is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha (BS 5.1), the eternal form of knowledge and bliss. Thus He has all the symptoms of spiritual bliss. Feeling separation from one's beloved is also an item of spiritual bliss.
- Hladini is His aspect of bliss; sandhini, of eternal existence; and samvit, of cognizance, which is also accepted as knowledge.
- Narada said, "His (Krsna) transcendental form is full of knowledge which never becomes agitated by ignorance, pride, attachment, envy or sense enjoyment."
The Infallible and Unfathomable Nature
Human knowledge is always "flexible and measurable," constantly changing as new discoveries are made. Śrīla Prabhupāda contrasts this with the infallible knowledge of the Supreme Lord. God's knowledge is natural, eternally fixed, and so incredibly deep that no mundane scientist or philosopher can ever calculate its limits.
- All great souls aspire to be equal in knowledge with Him (Krsna). This means that all other knowledge is ever insufficient, flexible and measurable, whereas the knowledge of the Lord is ever fixed and unfathomable.
- Although You engage Your energy in matter, You are always situated in Your original form and never fall from that position, for Your knowledge is infallible and always suitable to any situation. You are never bewildered by illusion.
- The Lord's knowledge is unlimited, and therefore one cannot touch where it ends, just as one cannot measure the ocean. What is the extent of our intelligence in comparison to the vast expanse of water in the ocean.
- The Lord in His eternal blissful body of knowledge is fully aware of all that happened in the past, that which is going on at the present and also what will happen in the future.
The Dynamic Expansion of Knowledge
One of the most fascinating theological concepts presented in the Vedic literatures is the dynamic nature of God's knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes an astonishing, eternal "competition" between the Lord's knowledge and His expanding energies, revealing that God is not static, but constantly growing in His own absolute awareness.
- The personified Vedas continued, "Because Your (Lord's) knowledge is also unlimited, there is unlimited competition between Your knowledge and Your expansion of energies."
- The idea is that because God and His knowledge are both unlimited, as soon as God is cognizant of some of His energies, He perceives that He has still more energies. In this way, both His energies and His knowledge increase.
- Because both of them (Lord's energies and knowledge) are unlimited, there is no end to the energies and no end to the knowledge with which to understand the energies.
The Source of Scientific and Vedic Truth
Because the Lord possesses absolute knowledge, He is the supreme scientist and the original author of all truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the complex functioning of the universe is simply an automatic display of His knowledge, and the ultimate goal of all Vedic literature is to reconnect the conditioned soul with this supreme source.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead's deep scientific knowledge is concentrated to the supreme point. For example, medical science knows some things superficially, but doctors do not know exactly how things happen in the body.
- A demon cannot calculate the unlimited potency of the Supreme Lord. As stated in CC Madhya 13.65 (purport), the different potencies of the Lord are always working as an automatic exhibition of His knowledge.
- Vedic knowledge is infallible because it comes down through the perfect disciplic succession of spiritual masters, beginning with the Lord Himself. Since He spoke the first word of Vedic knowledge, the source of this knowledge is transcendental.
- The Vedas offer knowledge of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, and Krsna in His incarnation as Vyasadeva is the compiler of the Vedanta-sutra.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely dismantles the impersonalist assumption that the Absolute Truth is a blank, formless void devoid of cognition. As Śrīla Prabhupāda so clearly explains, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the very embodiment of absolute knowledge. He is defined by His complete possession of six opulences, and His knowledge is so profound that it forms a specific, eternal aspect of His spiritual body known as the samvit-śakti (the cognitive potency). Unlike the knowledge of mundane scientists—which is always "flexible and measurable," plagued by the four defects of conditioned life, and ultimately superficial—the Lord's knowledge is natural, infallible, and eternally unfathomable. He perfectly knows everything that has happened in the past, everything occurring in the present, and everything that will unfold in the future, including the deepest, hidden motives of every living entity. One of the most mesmerizing revelations of Vedic philosophy is the dynamic, ever-expanding nature of this knowledge. Because both God's energies and His knowledge are unlimited, there is an eternal, transcendental competition between them; as soon as the Lord comprehends a new extent of His expanding energies, His knowledge simultaneously expands to understand them, creating an endless progression of divine cognizance. Because the Lord is the supreme knower, He is the original author of the Vedas and the supreme engineer of the cosmos. Therefore, the only way for a conditioned soul to escape the darkness of material ignorance is to stop relying on flawed human speculation and humbly receive perfect knowledge through the disciplic succession, originating directly from the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.
