Diving Into the Ocean of Increasing Bliss
Diving Into the Ocean of Increasing Bliss
Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly reminds us that every living entity is searching for happiness, but true satisfaction cannot be found within the temporary material energy. The constitutional nature of the spirit soul is to be joyful (ānandamayo 'bhyāsāt), but this joy can only be awakened in connection with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa. Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu describes this spiritual awakening as ānandāmbudhi-vardhanam—the increasing ocean of transcendental bliss. Unlike the theoretical peace sought by the jñānīs or impersonalists, the dynamic, active life of Kṛṣṇa consciousness provides an ever-fresh, constantly expanding spiritual pleasure that far surpasses any experience found within the material universe.
The Nature of Material vs. Spiritual Happiness
In the material world, enjoyment is strictly limited by the capacity of the physical body and the constraints of time. No matter how intense a material pleasure may seem, it inevitably degrades into satiation, boredom, or disgust. In stark contrast, spiritual happiness continually expands.
- You cannot enjoy unlimitedly. That is not possible. Just for few seconds, for few minutes, or for few hours, then it becomes disgusting. That is the material enjoyment. But the spiritual enjoyment, spiritual bliss is different. That is simply increasing.
- Happiness in spiritual nature always increases in volume with a new phase of appreciation; there is no question of decreasing the bliss. Such unalloyed spiritual bliss is nowhere to be found within the orbit of the material universe.
- Duration of life with a proportionate quantity of bliss and knowledge may be increased from one planet to another. One can increase the duration of life to thousands & hundreds of thousands of years in different planets, but nowhere is there eternal life.
- Now gradually the ocean is drying up, and the land is coming out. Therefore, this material ocean is decreasing, but the transcendental ocean of bliss is only increasing.
The Expanding Ocean of Ānanda
Lord Caitanya gave the perfect analogy to describe the nature of this spiritual joy: it is like an ocean that defies the laws of nature. A material ocean is bound by its shorelines, but the ocean of ānanda (bliss) swells and increases the deeper one dives into it.
- Ambudhi means the ocean. So this ocean does not increase, but when you come to the spiritual ocean of ananda, blissfulness, it will increase daily.
- By nature's law, by God's order, it (Pacific Ocean) does not come beyond its limit. Within the limit it is. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu says that there is an ocean of transcendental bliss, which is increasing.
- The shores of the ocean are set; they have certain limits. However, the ocean of bliss is constantly increasing. The more we enter into that spiritual bliss, the more we become joyful.
- Lord Caitanya says that ambudhi, the ocean of bliss, it increases. It increases. That is a new experience. When you are actually in spiritual happiness, your bliss will be increased.
The Supreme Lord and His Eternal Associates
Kṛṣṇa is perfectly self-sufficient (ātmārāma), yet He expands Himself into countless living entities and associates to taste the nectar of loving exchanges. By interacting with His pure devotees, both the Lord and the devotees experience an unlimited magnification of their joyous existence.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead expanded Himself into many for His ever-increasing spiritual bliss, and the living entities are parts and parcels of this spiritual bliss.
- In Vrndavana, for example, although Lord Krsna is full in Himself, He wants the cooperation of His devotees like the cowherd boys and the gopis to increase His transcendental bliss.
- In Vrndavana, He used to put on reddish garments, with a golden shirt on His body & an orange colored turban on His head. The different kinds of belts, combined with His enchanting smile, used to always increase the transcendental bliss of His associates.
- Krishna's name is Acyuta, unchanging, but He is Bliss although always full, still increases, to increase the blissful existence of the devotee.
- The spiritual bliss in the mind of Devaki-devi gradually increased, just as the moon increases every night until it becomes a full moon.
Hearing, Chanting, and Vaiṣṇava Association
The practical method for accessing this ocean is the saṅkīrtana movement—chanting, hearing, and associating with devotees. Simply by recounting the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa and Lord Caitanya, the atmosphere becomes surcharged, and the bliss of everyone present multiplies.
- It (sankirtana movement) increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it enables us to fully taste the nectar for which we are always anxious.
- By chanting the holy name one can attain the perfection of nirvana, or liberation from material existence, and so increase one's blissful life of spiritual existence as described by Lord Caitanya - anandambudhi-vardhanam.
- As Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard these talks, His ocean of transcendental bliss increased. He therefore told Svarupa Damodara, "Go on speaking, go on speaking." And thus Svarupa Damodara continued.
- This same narration was again related by Lord Nityananda to all the devotees, and their transcendental bliss increased as they heard the story again.
- Like the full moon, he illuminated the entire assembly of Vaisnavas by speaking Sri Caitanya-mangala, and by the nectar of his qualities he increased their transcendental bliss.
The Unlimited Path of Devotional Service
Because Kṛṣṇa is unlimited, service to Him is also unlimited. Therefore, a sincere devotee never becomes stagnant or satisfied that they have reached the end of their realization. At every step, the internal inspiration provided by the Lord pushes the devotee into newer and deeper waters of bliss.
- I am very happy that you have already made sufficient progress. But don't be satisfied that, "This is end." No. Krsna is unlimited. His service is also unlimited. Krsna consciousness is the line where the blissful ocean increases.
- In Krishna Consciousness, because the spirit soul is by nature very jolly and blissful, this jolliness only increases more and more as the bliss of serving Krishna increases more and more.
- Being inspired by Him (the Supersoul), the devotee experiences increased transcendental bliss in the execution of his devotional service.
- As soon as this blazing fire of material existence is extinguished, immediately you come to the platform of blissfulness. Then that blissfulness will increase one after another, one after another. Just like the comparison has been given just like the moon.
- The next benefit is anandambudhi-vardanam: the ocean of transcendental bliss increases; and purnamrtasvadanam: he tastes the nectar of Krsna consciousness at every step of life. In other words, his life becomes totally blissful.
Conclusion
Understanding that spiritual bliss is ever-increasing shifts our entire paradigm of happiness. Instead of desperately chasing the temporary, stagnant pleasures of the material body and mind, we can actively engage in the limitless process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. By dedicating our energy to chanting the holy names, hearing the pastimes of the Lord, and humbly serving the Vaiṣṇavas, we plunge into the ocean of ānanda. In this divine atmosphere, the soul discovers its natural, joyous constitution, experiencing an ever-fresh, dynamic, and limitless happiness that increases eternally in connection with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
