Long before the current age of degradation, the intellectual and priestly class of Vedic society possessed staggering, almost inconceivable mystic powers. These exalted individuals were not mere scholars; they wielded a tangible spiritual energy known as brahma-tejas, acquired through intense austerities and pure devotion. By sharing these historical accounts, Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly illustrates that true authority and power in the universe ultimately stem from spiritual purity rather than material weapons or royal armies.
The Spiritual Power of Brahma-Tejas
The title of a priest or intellectual in Vedic culture was earned through rigorous training and the accumulation of potent spiritual energy, not simply claimed by family lineage. This acquired mystic fire allowed them to perfectly execute complex rituals and cause immediate, miraculous effects within the physical world. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that through this immense power, they were elevated to a status nearly equal to that of the Supreme Lord Himself.
- The word brahma-tejasa, used in this verse, is significant. In those days, brahmanas were so powerful that simply by desiring and by chanting a Vedic mantra, they could accomplish very wonderful effects.
- To take birth in a family of brahmanas is not the ultimate finishing touch; one must have the power of a brahmana, which is called brahma-tejas. Similarly, taking birth in a royal family is not the all in all; one must possess the power to rule the world.
- The brahmanas (dvija, the twice-born), are given a chance by the sastric regulations to become almost as powerful as the Supreme Lord.
- Visvamitra, the son of Maharaja Gadhi, was as powerful as the flames of fire. From the position of a ksatriya, he achieved the position of a powerful brahmana by undergoing penances and austerities.
Superiority Over Royal Prowess
While kings and emperors held vast political authority and military strength, they were ultimately subordinate to the spiritual authority of the ascetic class. If a monarch became tyrannical or deviated from religious principles, the intellectual class did not need to raise an army to dethrone him; they could subdue him entirely through their mystic vibration. Śrīla Prabhupāda strongly advises that the princely order must never proudly display its material might before these highly elevated spiritual personalities.
- Brahmanas and Vaisnavas are more powerful than royalty. It is therefore advised that the princely order not exhibit its material prowess before these two communities and should avoid offending them.
- If the king was an upstart, the brahmins, they were so powerful, they did not require any weapon; simply by their words they will kill him.
- The demigods are in a position many times higher than that of human beings. Therefore, although the great saints and sages were also powerful brahmanas, they requested the demigods to revive Nimi's body, which had been preserved in various perfumed balms.
The Danger of Offending Brāhmaṇas
Because of their immense potency, committing an offense against a qualified ascetic carries swift and devastating cosmic reactions. This is famously demonstrated in the history of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, a flawless emperor who accidentally offended a meditating sage and was subsequently cursed to die by a young, inexperienced ascetic boy. Śrīla Prabhupāda uses this incident to underscore the absolute necessity of maintaining deep respect for spiritually powerful individuals, as the laws of nature strictly punish such transgressions.
- Due to Maharaja Pariksit's good government, even a boy of tender age, who was playing with other inexperienced boys, could become as powerful as a qualified brahmana.
- A child of a Brahmin, a son of a Brahmin, was so powerful that he could curse a great king like Maharaja Pariksit that "You have insulted my father. So that snake will bite you within seven days, and you will die." This was the version.
- Maharaja Pariksit knew all this, and he concluded that his insulting a powerful brahmana was certainly to be punished by the laws of the Lord, and he was expecting something very difficult in the very near future.
- Sri Suta Gosvami said: While returning home, the King (Maharaja Pariksit) felt that the act he had committed against the faultless and powerful brahmana was heinous and uncivilized. Consequently he was distressed.
Performing Miracles and Sacrifices
The perfect execution of ancient Vedic sacrifices required priests whose purity and mantra chanting were utterly flawless. These experts had the staggering ability to create life, summon demigods, and even bring the Supreme Personality of Godhead directly into the sacrificial arena. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that whatever these personalities declared, whether a dark curse or a divine blessing, manifested instantly into physical reality.
- Brahmanas like Bhrgu Muni were so powerful that they could create such powerful demigods simply by chanting the Vedic mantras. Vedic mantras are still available, but the chanters are not.
- The brahmanas engaged as priests in the sacrificial ceremony were not ordinary brahmanas. They were so powerful that they could bring forth the Supreme Personality of Godhead by their prayers. Thus Maharaja Nabhi was able to see the Lord face to face.
- The brahmanas were so powerful that simply by their cursing one would immediately die.
- In those days if a brahmana should curse someone it would come true. They had the power to curse or give benediction.
Degradation in the Age of Kali
While the history of the Vedic culture is filled with accounts of these mystic personalities, such power is virtually non-existent in the modern era. The current age of Kali is characterized by widespread degradation, falsehood, and a complete lack of the necessary purity required to chant Vedic mantras with true effect. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly clarifies that certain complex sacrifices and the arbitrary issuance of curses are no longer viable or applicable in today's society.
- Formerly there were powerful brahmanas who could make such experiments using Vedic hymns, but now, because of the Kali-yuga, brahmanas are not so powerful. Therefore the killing of cows and bulls for rejuvenation is forbidden.
- In this age of Kali there are no powerful brahmanas who can invite the demigods or give renewed life to animals.
- Maharaja Pariksit, he was cursed by a boy brahmana that within seven days he'll be bitten by a snake and he'll die. The brahmanas were so powerful. So brahmana is not joke. In Kali-yuga there is no such brahmana.
- Samika Muni sent news to the King (Maharaja Pariksit) that foolish Srngi, his son, although a powerful brahmana boy, unfortunately had misused his spiritual power by cursing the King unwarrantedly.
Conclusion
The ancient history of the Vedic culture reveals a time when the true administrators of the universe were not politicians, but deeply pure, spiritually realized intellectuals. Their astonishing abilities to bless, curse, and summon demigods through perfect mantra chanting demonstrate the ultimate supremacy of spiritual energy over material force. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies, although such potent individuals are practically absent in the current degraded age, the timeless principle remains that true power is always rooted in unalloyed devotion and purity.
