Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that nothing associated with the Supreme Lord is ordinary or material. By studying his instructions, we can understand how the Lord's clothing, weapons, and surroundings are composed of pure spiritual energy, why they are non-different from Him, and how they remain forever beyond mundane perception.
The Spiritual Reality of the Lord's Paraphernalia
In the material world, a person and their possessions are completely different. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that in the spiritual world, everything belonging to the Supreme Lord—His body, His dress, and His divine instruments—is full of eternity, knowledge, and bliss.
- Everything about the Supreme Personality of Godhead is spiritual, including His body, opulence and paraphernalia. Mayavada philosophy, however, covering His spiritual opulence, advocates the theory of impersonalism.
- Everything that is in the spiritual world is full of transcendental bliss, including the form, body, place and paraphernalia of the Lord. All are eternally cognizant and blissful.
- The form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His variegated pastimes and paraphernalia are all pure sattva-guna. Such variegatedness in pure goodness is exhibited eternally by the Lord for the satisfaction of the devotee.
- The Lord is omnipotent and omniscient, and similarly, His name, form, qualities, paraphernalia and everything pertaining to Him are complete, pure, eternal and free from material contamination.
Non-Different from the Supreme Lord
The Absolute Truth is non-dual. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that because the Lord's paraphernalia expands from His own internal potency, offering respect to His garments, weapons, or abode is exactly the same as worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead directly.
- As Lord Visnu is worshipable, so also are His associates, His paraphernalia, His airplane and His abode, for everything of Visnu's is as good as Lord Visnu.
- The cloth and other paraphernalia of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are but other forms of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The Lord and the devotee, they are on the same status. Every one of them. Lord, His name, His form, His quality, His associates, His paraphernalia. Everything, they are absolute.
- It is quite possible to have His association simply by following His instruction because the Lord and His instruction and the Lord and His name, fame, attributes and paraphernalia are all identical with Him, being absolute knowledge.
Beyond Material Perception
Mundane scholars and empiric philosophers constantly fail to comprehend the opulence of the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the transcendental nature of the Lord's paraphernalia cannot be investigated by blunt material senses; it is only revealed through aural reception and pure devotional service.
- Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His name, His form, His quality, His paraphernalia, etc., being transcendental, are beyond material nature, it is not possible to understand any one of them with the materialistic senses.
- The Vedas state, atah sri-krsna-namadi na bhaved grahyam indriyaih: (CC Madhya 17.136) the transcendental names, forms, qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of the Lord cannot be understood by our blunt material senses.
- With one’s materially contaminated senses one cannot understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead or His name, form, qualities or paraphernalia, but if one renders service unto Him, the Lord reveals Himself - Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.234.
Descending with the Lord
When God descends as an incarnation, He does not borrow anything from the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord uses His internal potency to bring His eternal Vaikuṇṭha paraphernalia with Him, ensuring His pastimes remain completely untainted by material nature.
- As the Lord appears by His own internal potency, so He also brings all His paraphernalia by the same internal potency, without extraneous help.
- When the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears, He brings with Him all His paraphernalia of Vaikuntha; therefore His name, His form, His quality, His paraphernalia and His entourage all belong to the transcendental world.
- Baladeva is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One who hears and chants about Him is purified. Because He is always the well-wisher of all living entities, He has descended with all His paraphernalia to purify the entire world and lessen its burden.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda definitively establishes that the possessions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are in no way comparable to the temporary, mundane objects of this world. Everything associated with the Lord—His dress, His weapons, His flute, and His eternal abode—is composed of pure sattva-guṇa, vibrating with transcendental bliss and absolute knowledge. Because the spiritual realm is non-dual, the Lord and His paraphernalia are completely identical in potency; to worship the Lord's lotus feet, His garments, or His name is to worship the Lord Himself. While conditioned souls fruitlessly attempt to understand these divine elements with their materially contaminated senses, the pure devotee easily accesses this reality through the simple process of hearing, chanting, and serving. Ultimately, whenever the Lord mercifully descends to this dark material world, He is never subjected to its limitations, for He always brings His own brilliant, eternal Vaikuṇṭha paraphernalia with Him.
