Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently contrasts the temporary, frustrating nature of material life with the eternal, blissful reality of the Supreme Lord’s activities. These divine activities are known as nitya-līlā, or eternal pastimes. Unlike worldly events that occur once and fade into history, Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes are factual, dynamic, and everlasting. Because the cosmic creation consists of innumerable universes, the Lord is continuously manifesting His appearances, childhood pastimes, and loving exchanges in one universe or another at every single second. To understand this profound science of nitya-līlā is to grasp the very essence of the spiritual world.
Everlasting and Factual
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that material activities are strictly temporary; whatever we achieve or do with our present bodies will inevitably end. In stark contrast, Kṛṣṇa's līlā is eternal. He stresses that the worship of Śrī Kṛṣṇa is not based on imaginary art or mythology, but on the absolute, factual reality of His everlasting pastimes, including His eternal loving affairs with His devotees.
- Nitya-lila means everlasting pastimes. Our lila, material, that is not nitya-lila. Whatever I'm acting by this body, it is not nitya; it is temporary.
- So Krsna's lila, it is not an invented, we are worshiping Krsna as something imaginary, some artistic picture. No. It is nitya-lila. Krsna is fact.
- Nitya-lila means the pastimes, or the loving exchange, affairs between Radha and Krsna, that is eternal. That is not temporary.
- When the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears, He accepts His eternal father and mother, and they accept Krsna as their son. This pastime takes place eternally and is therefore called nitya-lila. Thus there was no cause for surprise or ridicule.
Simultaneous Manifestation Across Universes
According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the concept of nitya-līlā means that everything is existing simultaneously. Because there are countless material universes, as Kṛṣṇa finishes a particular pastime in one universe, He immediately enacts it in another. By His omnipotent will, the original spiritual realm of Vṛndāvana is perfectly duplicated wherever He chooses to display His pastimes.
- There are innumerable universes, and the Lord is appearing in one of these universes at every moment. Therefore His pastimes are called nitya-lila, eternal pastimes.
- Krsna's lila is called nitya-lila, not that one lila is going on, other lila is finished, no. Everything is existing simultaneous.
- By Krsna's omnipotency the same Vrndavana is duplicated. It is possible. That is called nitya-lila. Wherever He likes, He can bring in Vrndavana and He can have His pastimes.
- Our new year is every day because Krishna belongs to the nitya lila. Nitya lila means that all of His Pastimes are going on in either of the so many universes.
Continuously Unfolding Events
Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the famous events of Kṛṣṇa's life are not trapped in the past. At this very second, somewhere in the cosmic creation, Kṛṣṇa is taking birth on Janmāṣṭamī. Somewhere else, He is lifting Govardhana Hill, dancing with the gopīs, or fighting on the battlefield of Kurukṣetra. These specific activities are constantly unfolding without cessation.
- Nitya-lila means the janmastami-lila is going on permanently somewhere or other.
- Nitya-lila means the janmastami is going on. His (Krsna) govardhana-lila is going on. Everything. Everything, what He displayed when He was present, that is going on.
- Krsna is called nitya-lila. He is taking His birth, He is fighting in the battle of Kuruksetra, He's dancing with the gopis. That is going on eternally in either of the so many, innumerable universes.
- In every minute, every second, He (Krsna) is taking His birth and He is fighting in the Kuruksetra. That is called nitya-lila, eternal. His everything eternal.
The Ultimate Goal of Life
As Śrīla Prabhupāda powerfully concludes, understanding the reality of the nitya-līlā should ignite a profound desire within the living entity to return back home, back to Godhead. Even the devotional activities performed in this world, such as opening a temple, are reflections of these eternal pastimes. One should be prepared to take every necessary risk in this human form of life to transcend the cycle of birth and death and enter into the eternal kingdom of the Lord.
- If there is some chance of entering such a immortal, eternal kingdom of God, why should I not take chance? - You should take chance at all risk in this life to enter into the nitya-lila, nitya-lila, eternal pastimes of the Lord.
- So Krsna's creation of this brahmanda and His pastimes, they are going on, nitya-lila. Kona kona bhagavan ei dekhi bare paya. The lila is going on constantly, but one who is fortunate enough, he can see how lila is.
- Just like we are opening the temple. This is also nitya-lila. In some brahmanda there is this opening ceremony of temple. When tomorrow we shall open, day after tomorrow it is opened, but day after tomorrow in some brahmanda it is being opened.
- Although the Lord (Krsna) is appearing constantly in the material universes, His pastimes are eternally present in the original Goloka Vrndavana. Therefore these pastimes are called nitya-lila - eternally present pastimes.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes are the ultimate, enduring reality of existence. While the material world is characterized by constant creation, deterioration, and annihilation, the nitya-līlā remains an ever-fresh, continuously unfolding expression of divine bliss. Because the Supreme Lord is unlimited, His pastimes seamlessly traverse the innumerable universes, ensuring that His loving exchanges with His devotees never cease. By understanding that these divine activities are factual and eternal, a sincere soul is inspired to abandon the temporary attachments of this world and fully dedicate their life to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, eagerly striving to enter into the immortal, blissful pastimes of Goloka Vṛndāvana.
