Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that in the material world, true safety cannot be found in mundane arrangements. Whether it involves the protection of vulnerable members of society or an individual's defense against imminent danger, all protective measures are ultimately useless without the supreme sanction and shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Failure of Material Defense
Material methods of protection—such as expert doctors, loving parents, or military strength—are largely ineffective on their own. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even the most advanced defense mechanisms fail if one is without the absolute protection of the Supreme Lord.
- Although he should use his common sense in the matter of defending, he is sure that without being protected by Lord Krsna no one can defend himself, however expert he may be in the art of defense.
- Sometimes a patient dies in spite of a good physician and good medicine. Thus without the protection of the Lord one cannot live, with or without parents.
- The gopis said, "There are many means of protection, but when one is doomed, none of the protective measures can help, and without Your protection the so-called sources of protection simply become sources of continued distress."
- Krsna gives protection to everyone, for without His protection no one can live even for a single moment. But one should not think, - If Krsna is giving protection to everyone, what is the use of becoming a devotee.
Protecting the Pillars of Society
A civilized society requires strict protection for its most vital and vulnerable members: women, cows, and brāhmaṇas. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that a society without protection for these pillars quickly degrades into chaos, exploitation, and demonic civilization.
- Without protection of cows, brahminical culture cannot be maintained; and without brahminical culture, the aim of life cannot be fulfilled.
- Without protection of the brahmanas and the cows, there can be no human civilization and no question of happy, peaceful life. Asuras, therefore, are always interested in killing the brahmanas and cows.
- According to Manu-samhita, every woman should be protected, either by her husband, by her father or by her grown sons. Without such protection, a woman will be exploited.
- Even Sita-devi, the direct potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, she is showing that without being protected, she can be ravished, she can be kidnapped, she can be misused by the raksasas. This is the example. Sita-devi was quite competent.
The Ultimate Shelter of the Lord
Recognizing one's complete dependence on the Lord is the hallmark of a pure devotee. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that great personalities like Queen Kuntī understood that without the Lord's direct presence and protection, they were always in danger. Furthermore, escaping the material world entirely requires the specific spiritual protection of the Lord.
- She indirectly says to Krsna, - Do not leave us. Don't think that we are now safe. Without Your protection, we are always unsafe.
- Kunti continued, "When You sent Akrura, I could understand that there was no possibility of our being put in danger. All good fortune in our life began when You sent Akrura to us. Since, I have been convinced that we are not without protection."
- The poor subjects were without protection due to the Battle of Kuruksetra, and they were awaiting the assumption of power by Maharaja Yudhisthira.
- Without the protection of Gaura-Nitai - Krsna and Balarama - one cannot get out of the dark well of ignorance in material existence.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains that whether one seeks physical safety, social stability, or spiritual liberation, acting without the protection of the Supreme Lord guarantees failure. A functional human society must protect its women, cows, and brāhmaṇas, supported by a righteous government. Yet, even the best material arrangements fall short unless sanctioned by Kṛṣṇa. Ultimately, the sincere devotee acknowledges their complete dependence on the Lord, knowing that escaping the dark well of material existence is impossible without the divine shelter of Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
